We Happy Few is an action-adventure survival horror game developed by Compulsion Games and published by Gearbox Publishing for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Story and Background

We Happy Few sets in an alternative timeline, where England lost the World War II and became an artificially enthused society where the status quo is everything. To avoid anguish, British citizens take a drug called “Joy.” Some drug-addled Inhabitants collapse due to it, and others refuse taking the drug. In this context, Wellington Wells has become a dystopian police state on the verge of collapse.

Playable Characters - Three Interwoven Narratives

Play like unique citizens of Wellington Wells. We Happy Few introduces three flawed characters – quietly rebellious citizens with three different paths in a city ravaged by World War II. Each of them has its own strengths and weaknesses. 

They are trying to explore their own connections to the surrounding events and to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial. 

Each character has a unique storyline. As you hide, conform, or fight back, you will encounter dark humour, a spot of hope, and even some redemption along the way. It’s your choice; fight or blend in with the drug-addled inhabitants of the town.

Arthur Hastings’ Story

He is a patient and awkward editor of the Department of Archives, Printing & Recycling. He desires to find his long-lost brother, Percival ”Percy” Hastings. For such purposes, he needs to escape from Wellington Wells, the microstate-sized city that exists independently from Great Britain.

Sally Boyle’s Story

Sally is a creator of a new brand of Joy. She works in her own laboratory and is the mother of the first baby ever born in Wellington Wells in fifteen years. Upon remembering that her mother poisoned her family, she tries to escape from the city with her daughter Gwen.

Ollie Starkey’s Story

Starkey is a former soldier from the British Army. He reminisces his dead daughter, who died several years ago. Having discovered that the story of Wellington Wells is a lie and that the city's food has run out, he wants to reveal the truth to the population and then escape.

In We Happy Few you deal with relevant decisions that are fundamental to understanding the story and gameplay. These decisions determine the nature of your quest.

You control one of the three flawed characters in the different acts, experiencing three intertwined narratives.

The game allows you to choose the difficulty level of your preference. Select which you want according to your level, skills, and whether you want to face a real challenge. New and experienced players will enjoy this game equally. 

Permadeath

If you like challenges, try permadeath, a feature where your character is gone forever if they die. Of course, you can disable this feature at the start of the game to continue the game after dying. 

Arcade Mode

The recently added mode expands the world and enriches the We Happy Few experiences. It also introduces three new games modes.

Survival Mode

You spawn on an island, which is a mix between Hamlyn Village and the Garden District. You need to find a boat capacitor or a key card to escape from the map. The longer you survive, the higher your score will be. 

The Night Watch Mode 

This mode focuses on combat features. You spawn in a procedurally generated world. There you must kill several enemies to advance the rounds. When the round timer ends, you can use a Bobby Popper to finish the round.    

Sandbox Mode

In Sandbox Mode, there are not so normal rules; you can do whatever you want. You don’t have a specific goal. You can also choose the size of the island, the character of the three campaigns you want to use, and NPC density.
