What Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3?

  • Release Date: November 2023

  • Developer: Sledgehammer Games

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S

  • Meta Score: N/D

Let’s start by presenting the game at the front of it all – Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. It’s returning to the game's roots for the third time and reinventing the most popular Modern Warfare series. Is it as good as the previous game? Well, it’s debatable, but it’s still one of the most popular games in gaming history.

The story follows the fight against Vladimir Makarov, who is all about doing bad things to good people. The plot may not be the best, but this game's cinematography and “moments” are stunning. We go back to Verdansk and Kastovia in order to face the evil-doer once again and prevent him from evil-doing all the things in question. Additionally, you get to not only play the way the game intended but also enjoy the Open Combat Missions, where you can change the approach to the fight and decide how to fight against evil.

But it’s all about multiplayer, so visit this section more than once and see all the fantastic maps the developers prepared for us. You get all the maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, so you can count on some serious warfare. We’ve got some classics, such as Kill Confirmed and Hardpoint, but there are some new ones. You should check out Cutthroat, as it aims to make teams compete against each other so that one will finish the objective before another. And, of course, the zombie mode is there as well.

It's worth checking out, but if you’re a fan – we don’t need to remind you. So, if you want to enjoy quality gaming – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is here. And so, let’s see what other titles are in play.

Battlefield 2042

  • Release Date: October 2021

  • Developer: DICE

  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: 68/100

The biggest competitor to all Call of Duty games was always the Battlefield franchise, the most recent being Battlefield 2042. And – let’s face it, it did not have the best press in recent years. Battlefield 2042 came out as a half-product, with tons of bugs and problematic situations, and overall, it was not that good of a game. But, with recent updates and patches, it seems to be one of the hidden gems and should probably be reconsidered as one of the more exciting titles on the market.

So, what’s it all about? Well, it’s an FPS Call-of-Duty-like game that offers much more than the original. Here, you experience your everyday shooting, fighting and a wonderland full of fast-paced vehicle combat with planes, tanks, and even boats.

It’s a complete package for gameplay, and you should focus on the online part. And let’s face it, the plot will not be put next to Dostoyewski’s works. The big bad guy in this game is Russia, which is rather on with the times and its war with the United States. The problem with the world is ecology – the water is rising, Germany has no money, and the satellites around the Earth are gone. So, the only sensible thing to do is create a global offensive and fight with each other until one bleeds out. It’s the third world war, and we are all here to enjoy it.

The multiplayer part is where the game shines best. Here, you have dozens of weapons, vehicles to choose from, enemies to fight against – lots and lots of fantastic stuff to go around. So, if you need a realistic portrayal of war or what it would feel like to fight against some terrible guys – Battlefield is here for you with modern weapons and even crazier vehicles.

There are four classes in this title: Assault, Engineer, Medic, and Recon, and you need to choose the right one. It will impact the whole team's performance, so ensure you excel at your goal. Additionally, there are essentially three modes of play, the All-Out-Warfare, Breakthrough, and Conquest, with 128 players on one map, so, as you can see, it’s total mayhem.

Star Wars: Battlefront II

  • Release Date: November 2017

  • Developer: DICE

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

  • Meta Score: 68/100

Now that we have the main fight behind us, let’s see what’s going on with more obscure or just different titles. Like – Star Wars: Battlefront II! It may not feel like a Call of Duty-type game, but trust us – there is nothing more similar than this game. And it’s all in the Star Wars universe, so you will see Jakku and all the other places you have enjoyed throughout the years in the movie theaters!

Here, you can do everything on Earth, but it’s in space this time. And, you don’t have the Deus Ex machine that was the Jedis and Sids, but rather the on-the-ground work of many soldiers trying to survive the Force-wars between the main characters. And trust us – those main ones do not know how hard it is to be a stormtrooper or a rebel.

The main concern of this game is the Return of the Jedi era, with the Galactic Civil War, and it ends right before The Force Awakens times. There are four classes for all the sides – Assault, Heavy, Officer, and Specialist, and three starfighter classes – Fighter, Interceptor, and Bomber. Choose wisely, as it will impact your gameplay heavily in the future.

The game is a blast, and we cannot recommend it enough as a good alternative to the Battlefield/Call of Duty clash. You have giant battles but also – some personal stories here, so it’s everything in small doses. Check it out!

Escape From Tarkov

  • Release Date: July 2017

  • Developer: Battlestate Games

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: N/D

Another exciting title for all Call of Duty enthusiasts is Escape From Tarkov. But here – you experience something completely different than in all the previous games. This time, it’s all about realism like you have never seen before. The game has earned praise from gun and war history enthusiasts for its authentic portrayal of shooting a gun or engaging in warfare.

You don’t have any HUD for starters, so if you want to find out how many bullets you have left, you need to check physically. If you get shot in the leg, you will stumble; you can’t just simply “heal” yourself; you need to put on bandages and everything. War is not a cool thing here, let us tell you. And the ballistic models are extraordinary.

It’s also survival at heart, so you need to eat, sleep, and care for, you know, staying alive. The whole thing happens in Russia, so there are a lot of problematic situations all around. If you like this kind of game, this is the top tier. For survival and FPS titles alike. Worth recommending.

Arma 3

  • Release Date: September 2013

  • Developer: Bohemia Interactive

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, MacOS, Linux

  • Meta Score: 74/100

And if you’re all about realism, you should check Arma 3 as well. It’s a war simulation more than just an FPS game, and it has some of the most realistic-looking weapons to have ever seen the light of day. The game does not excel at the plot, with dozens of factions trying to kill each other so the other would not take control. It’s pretty standard in most cases.

But, where the game gets interesting is the approach to realism. Like the Tarkov game, you will experience what it means to fire a gun and what those guns look like and feel when it comes to shooting and handling. It’s a much harder game than Call of Duty or Battlefield, as those titles are more action games than shooting simulators.

It has many additional elements, like vehicles, helicopters, boats, and plenty of other elements that you would enjoy in Battlefield or Call of Duty titles. So, if it’s realism you’re all about, and you would like to experience something more interesting than just simple – go here, shoot there kind of game, Arma 3 is a title for you!

Hell Let Loose

  • Release Date: July 2021

  • Developer: Current: Cover 6 Studios, Expression Games, Previous: Black Matter

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S

  • Meta Score: 84/100

Another great FPS-like Call of Duty that you should consider is Hell Let Loose. It was greatly appreciated by the community with many exciting mechanics that it brought to the gaming world and FPS. And in the end, it’s just a well-designed title.

So, what is all the fuss about? You have those giant maps with 50 soldiers on each side of the conflict. There are plenty of armies to choose from, so your usual suspects are not only in play. We have the Germans, Americans, Soviets, British, Finnish, and Polish forces. Each has its particularities and ways that it excels over the others.

You can play in two modes essentially – Warfare and Offensive. Both are sort of – control and go to the following point kind of situation. In each case, you can experience some rough situations on each side, though, as it’s like a regular war on those maps.

So, as the game modes provide you with a giant size of conflict and demand a lot of planning, communication is essential in those games. You need to strategize your plans, give orders to people as a leader, or follow them as a soldier. The game allows the Commanders to use resources in different places on the map. If it's advanced warfare with a lot of planning that you’re all about – then this title is something that you should consider.

Squad

  • Release Date: September 2020

  • Developer: Offworld Industries

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: N/D

And finally, we have the Squad. Here, it’s also all about teamwork, but in the case of this title – it’s much smaller, well, squads. You need to work together to fight against the other teams that may be better as individual soldiers but never as a group!

The squad is all about connecting the best aspects of each team member. Choosing the right profession for you is essential, as it will impact the whole game. There are nine players each time; everyone must work together for the greater good.

You have a medic, assault, and all the classic classes we all know and love. One of the team members is a leader who communicates with other squad leaders from friendly teams. If he gets nominated to be a commander, they can decide whether or not to use the artillery and UAV support.

The game focuses mostly on tracking and eliminating the enemy using guns and vehicles. Additionally, there is a ticket system that you need to pay close attention to. Every time you lose a friend or a vehicle, the tickets get removed from your team. After losing all the tickets, you lose the game. Conversely, killing an enemy or taking their vehicle will result in you gaining a ticket. It’s a demanding game, but it's worth checking out if you like this kind of warfare with total teamwork.

Games like Call of Duty – Conclusion

Thanks for stopping by! We hope our picks will help you choose your next favorite FPS game! We did not include some titles from the Halo franchise, like Master Chief Collection or Halo: Infinite, and some Apex Legends type titles, as we felt like those futuristic weapons and individual-based fighting are not as in line with the recent title from CoD as we would like. We focused on similar games in spirit, not only in gameplay. Plenty of great games for you to check out, so choose wisely, and we will see you in the next one!
