Determine Strategy of Operation Bagration

Steel Division 2, developed and published by Eugen Systems, throws you into Operation Bagration. It was the Soviet plan of breaking Nazi armies. The plan assumed a simple goal. Surround Wehrmacht Army Group Center in Belarus, “liberate” Minsk, and create an unstoppable spearhead right into the heart of Germany.

Your role? Take over either side of war and do whatever it takes to win. To do this, you’ll need to get acquainted with three distinct screens.

Deck System

This is where you are the weapon expert

Steel Division 2 offers a robust editor that allows editing of minute details in every unit to customize the divisions at your disposal. From the overall composition of your army to the exact pieces of equipment that every soldier, artillery piece, tank and aircraft can get.

There’s also another layer to it. Each battle has escalating phases A-C that correlate to the amount of heavier machinery available. It’s your decision whether you want an early, singular KV-1 to hold down a key area, or if you leave them for later when you can call in a whole squadron.

Want early air superiority? Go for it. Is middle-game blitzkrieg your thing? Not a problem. Human wave tactics of the Soviet Union for the whole game? It’s cheap and works well in dense forests and cities!

Strategical Map

Here, you move your chess pieces across the map. In this turn-based, dynamic strategic map, when the frontlines ebb and flow, you get more and more of that dreadful feeling… that you’ll screw something, somewhere up. So it’s exactly like being a general in a real conflict.

Anyway – if you played any of the Total War titles, this should be a familiar sight. If not, on this map, you can see your armies and set their positions and stances. And if you’re in contact with enemy armies… well, the “real-time” strategy element has to come from somewhere, no?

Tactical Map

It’s go time. This is when the magic happens. This is where you fight for every house, bridge, hill, and treeline in real-time tactical battles. Here you call in artillery strikes, make strafing runs, hold down key positions, and storm that hill

To say those are some HUGE maps is an understatement, as some can be as big as 150 x 100 KILOMETERS. With a 1:1 scale related to your units, you will feel the sheer size of the battlefield you have to cover.

The battles are humongous and complex. While giving you absolute tactical freedom, you have to consider ammunition your squads use and ground-level line of sight of your units that can and will be disrupted by hills, buildings, and forests.

You have to be prepared for ambushes, tanks around corners, and infantry hiding in forests and houses. And all of this is not limited to the ground, as your command covers aircraft as well. From attack craft to dedicated fighters and bombers, you will have to watch out for anti-aircraft guns, fuel leaks, and the simplest, yet most important factor — morale.

Every unit has a meter for their willingness to resist suppression and fire back, and a meter for holding ground. It’s imperative to keep your flanks secure and watch for wavering units, as it could spell the doom of the whole front.

Authentic, True to History Engagements

Everything is made with as much historical accuracy as the developers of Steel Division 2 could manage. They worked hard to ensure that every unit was on the correct scale relative to others. Every piece of equipment behaves as history leads us to believe, with an adequate amount of ammo, fuel, armor, speed, and reliability.

It extends especially to the campaign in which you command the whole forces meticulously recreated from official documentation from the WW II. Whether it’s the 2nd Panzer Group or VIII Army Corps, your entire army is just how it was at the beginning of Operation Bagration. You can change the course of history, but you’ll do so with a level of authenticity that cannot be omitted.

More Than One Mode

Just in case you thought that all this game had to offer was just some missions, I’m here to tell you that there is much more than that.

Dynamic Strategic Campaign

You get two dynamic strategic campaigns for each side of the conflict. These involve planning the movement and equipment of whole armies, lovely narration with professional voice acting, and propaganda movies!

Remember when Call of Duty did that between each mission? A few documentaries from war to immerse you in those real-time battles? Sometimes these movies show some soldiers; sometimes it’s speeches or battles; sometimes it’s a katyusha multiple rocket launcher doing a full salvo. It’s just nice to have the possibility to relive history.

Skirmish Mode

Here, for all your revisionists to do a little “what if” scenario. You take custom division decks, smack them against each other, and see what happens! It’s here, and it’s a few buttons away from gameplay.  It wouldn’t be a respectable strategy game without it.

Historical Battles

Revisit some of the most (in)famous battles and test your mettle. You play with pre-made divisions and do what you can to win. It can be harsh, depending on which side you choose.

Multiplayer

Welcome to the online chaos!

Remember those 100 km x 150 km maps? How about introducing 20 players in 10 vs. 10 matches for an unheard-of scale of engagement, where you collectively lead thousands?

Here’s where your tactical skills will have their ultimate test. Manage supply lines, control battalion movements, and (try to) communicate with your teammates for a breakthrough in enemy lines in an immense real-time tactical combat.

There are a few game modes to play with. You’ve got Conquest, and its “simple” objective of controlling chosen pieces of terrain, Destruction, where you have to kill more units than your enemy and Breakthrough with attacker/defender roles in an asymmetrical battle.

A Few DLCs to Pick

Ok, not “a few” DLCs, more like “WOW, THERE’S A FEW” and the range of those is as varied as the scope. These can add whole dynamic strategic campaigns in other parts of the worlds, or whole new nations to fight with. There are new units, divisions, camos, combat aces and so much more.

If you don’t want that granulation of DLCs, you can get joint packs beyond the standard edition. There are a few types of these, like Total Conflict Edition, Commander Deluxe Edition, or General Deluxe Edition. You can get CD keys for Steel Division 2 Commander Deluxe Edition and Steel Division 2 General Deluxe Edition on our site.

With all of them, you get a game that offers hundreds of hours of gameplay. You can recreate all battles of the Second World War. Your playground could be the entire Eastern Front. It could be the campaign in Africa, the oft-forgotten theater in Italy, or even battles around Warsaw in 1944.
