Wolfenstein: The New Order vs. Doom - The Best FPS Single-Player Clash!
We live in the golden age of gaming, that’s for sure. Not only do we get to play the new titles that are astonishing with their approach to gameplay and visuals, but we also get a new version of the old and gold titles that everyone loved back in the day. So, we have decided to put up two of the most popular video game series in gaming history – Doom and Wolfenstein.
Both are incredible FPS games with a fantastic narrative and lots of guts spilling over the screen. Wolfenstein and Doom games have been competing against each other for decades now, so it’s only fair to put them together to see which one will come out on top. So, let’s find out!
Wolfenstein: The New Order vs. Doom - The Best FPS Single-Player Clash!
Round 1 – Combat
You are starting with – combat. It’s one of the critical components for those classic first-person shooters. To beat Doom or Wolfenstein, you must be aware of the entire game without distractions. Whether you are a fan of the original Doom or the classic Wolfenstein, you know those titles are demanding yet satisfying. So, let’s see the new Doom and Wolfenstein and find out which perfected the combat aspect better.
Wolfenstein: The New Order
You are starting with Wolfenstein: The New Order. Here, we have the classic barge-in-and-blast-the-enemy tactic, and a more strategic approach to combat that is all about being stealthy and cool during those encounters.
Additionally, you can wield dual weapons if you want to have even greater firepower while fighting against dozens of Nazi/mechanical-related enemies. Wolfenstein also allows you to upgrade your weapons if you prefer a different playstyle than the one offered initially. It’s one of the best games for providing you with guns to fight and plenty of reasons to do so.
Doom
On the other hand, we have the Doom game, which is similar yet different. Regarding the Doom approach, you don’t get the stealth version of anything. Instead – you are forced into a combat situation that starts with a heavy metal riff, and the pace only gets faster and faster with each level.
You need to be constantly on the move to win, and your aggressiveness will be rewarded. If you are near death, you can perform Glory Kills on a weak enemy to get some health back from them. The resources are scarce, so you need to plan which gun you will be using, and the arsenal is impressive. And, as you can double jump, on account of being in space, you can have a lot of fun with this concept. If you played the previous versions, you will also enjoy this one.
Verdict
So, which one takes the lead? In our book, Doom just gives you more options when it comes to combat, and with the blend of Glory Kills, murdering dozens of enemies that seem never to end – it’s just a better title in general. It does not mean that the tactical approach of Wolfenstein: The New Order is flawed or weak; it just means that what Doom presents is much better.
Round 2 – Enemies
Next up – we have the enemies. Every shooter must have some good bullet sponges to fight through, which is the case with this one. It’s a sign of times that we are even concerned with how the enemies perform in the games, as it all started with some 2D sprites that no one even cared about more than passing through. With new technology, we also get more acquired tastes, so let’s see how both titles perform.
Wolfenstein: The New Order
In Wolfenstein, the case is pretty simple. You have your human and mechanical enemies from the Nazi regime that will do just anything to stop you from playing through. The enemies are creatively done with officers and commanders working together to stop you in your tracks.
The enhanced soldiers are great at preventing your efforts, and with the Panzerhund and Heavy Troopers alike, you will have a lot of issues pushing through them. Additionally, thanks to the different ways of encountering enemies, you will be able to face them upfront and create many other tactics that can help you get rid of the more advanced enemies more easily. And – the boss battles are something else. You just have to see it to understand it, so we will leave you to do that!
Doom
On the other hand, we have Doom, with the demonic hoard always trying to get ahead of us. Each demon has a different strategy, attack pattern, and weakness that you can use to eliminate them effectively.
But – in most cases, they are coming at you with supersonic speed. You need to utilize the tactic called in the community “Combat Chess.” You need to find the most problematic adversaries first, get rid of them, and then go from that, piece by piece, enemy by enemy. With the Glory Kills, you will have your hands full of work.
Verdict
Although we love the hordes of enemies from Doom, we cannot say no to the significant number of enemies and tactics you can use in Wolfenstein: The New Order. You have a lot of guys coming at you all the time, dozens of enemies swarming at you at all costs, but also – some more subtle ways of eliminating them.
Doom has one of the most significant enemy designs ever, but it’s pretty repeatable. Wolfenstein does something similar, but with the introduction of commanders and officers, it feels like those guys are doing something else each time. So – point to Wolfenstein.
Round 3 – Weapons
As we all know from childhood, when it comes to those classic FPS games, it’s all about the guns you can use to blast through the enemies quickly. So, let’s see how those two titles play out when bringing out the big guns.
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Starting with Wolfenstein: The New Order – we cannot stress enough how fun it is to use so many different weapons based on the classic guns from history. You have the World War II arsenal with millions of modifications and the dual-wielding aspect.
You can change the accuracy of the weapons, get a more prominent magazine, and even change the firing mode. It’s also possible to switch between weapons for stealth mode and something more blasting and aggressive. Additionally, you can also count on some unique weapons from the experimental side of the Nazi regime. Guns like Laserkraftwek and Dieselkraftwerk are something else!
Doom
On the other hand, we have the classic and iconic weapons from Doom. Here, we have the shotgun that pierces through everything, everywhere, a giant rocket launcher that can, surprisingly, be used for better jumping, and the iconic BFG, an acronym that we will not get too much into.
In this game, you can modify your weapons with alternate firing modes and upgrade your suit for more hardcore fighting situations. The chainsaw and Glory Kills are exciting additions, giving you an even more advanced arsenal. So, if you want something powerful – you can always opt for hand-to-hand combat.
Verdict
In our book, even though the guns in Wolfenstein: The New Order are something else, the Doom allows you much more than just plain old fun. We cannot underestimate the quality of the guns that are actually in pop culture now.
So, if you want something out of the ordinary, you should give this one a chance. Nevertheless – Wolfenstein: The New Order is top-of-the-top regarding quality gameplay; we just feel like the Doom game offers you more.
Round 4 – Story
Both titles have an incredible story that drives the whole narrative. It’s full of surprises, twists, and turns. In the end, as those games are primarily single-player, with multiplayer not that developed in both titles, it seems that the story is where the focus lies. Let’s see which game did it better!
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Wolfenstein: The New Order takes place in an alternate history where the Nazis emerged victorious in World War II. Set in the 1960s, it presents a dystopian world filled with problems that only one person, William "B.J." Blazkowicz, can solve. Blazkowicz, a war veteran, awakens from a coma to join the resistance and lead the fight against the Nazis.
His goal is to overthrow the regime and go through personal struggles as he navigates the world that he fought to prevent from happening. There’s a lot of hope and patriotism all around, while it’s still a fun experience, with jokes everywhere. It’s a game that does not treat itself too seriously, so if you like some good fun – this is a perfect title!
Doom
Doom, on the other hand, is doing, well, pretty much the same thing since its release. The demonic invasion on Mars and Earth is still going strong, and there is only one person who can fight against it – the iconic Doom Slayer. Your quest is pretty much simple – you see demons, you kill demons. And… that’s pretty much it.
The story is rather minimalistic, as the main focus is on the combat experience and murdering dozens of enemies all over the map. The most interesting aspect of this title is definitely the high-octane fights and amazingly detailed worlds that you roam through with your chainsaw!
Verdict
While Doom’s approach is much more fun at first glance, the humor and complexity of Wolfenstein are on another level. It’s entertaining, engaging, and you really want to help Blazkowicz in his quest to fight off the Nazis from the planet Earth. While the worlds in Doom and Wolfenstein are both exhilarating, we just have to give it to The New Order.
Round 5 – Graphics
And finally, we have the graphics department. In both titles, we see some of the most advanced upgrades in the history of gaming. First, Doom and Wolfenstein were the games that created the standards for gaming in terms of graphics, so it’s only fair that we would compare those two on that basis as well.
Wolfenstein: The New Order
When it comes to the graphics department, the game follows the classical color pattern of the early Wolfenstein games. Here, you get to experience the immersive world of Nazi rule, with detailed textures and lots of animations that support the gameplay-based storytelling.
The narrative is key when it comes to portraying the world of Nazis. The dystopian existence is full of grey, brown, and dark colors that are, in essence, the developed version of what we’ve seen in Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Enemy Territory.
Doom
Doom, on the other hand, went into the – the more, the better visual style. Everything is in vibrant colors, with Hell and Mars looking astonishingly good. This aesthetic is out of this world, and you can feel it every step of the way. It’s all about emphasizing the quality of this crazy world. Developers put a lot of effort into developing the horrid world that you will fall in love with. Demon details are among the most advanced in the history of gaming, and you will surely be astonished by them.
Verdict
When it comes to graphics – we just have to give it to Doom. It does everything that Wolfenstein does but more and better. The world feels more immersive, and the creativity when it comes to characters is astonishing. Overall, it’s just a superior product when it comes to graphics.
Maybe the feel of the Wolfenstein game is on par with what they tried to accomplish regarding gameplay, but the sheer quality of what Doom proposes cannot be underestimated. We just have to give this one to Doom.
Wolfenstein: The New Order vs. Doom – Verdict
So, the winner is – Doom. Even though both of the games are incredible in their own accord, it seems that Doom is slightly better. Nevertheless, we are positive that you will enjoy each title. Thanks for stopping by, and we will see you in the next one!
