Dead by Daylight

  • Release Date: June, 2016

  • Developer: Behaviour Digital Inc.

  • Platforms: Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, Stadia, Xbox Series X/S. PlayStation 5

  • Meta Score: 71

First up on our list is Dead by Daylight, the long-awaited and awarded multiplayer title and one of the most innovative cooperative horror games ever created.

Here you have to face a killer straight-up from a horror movie to survive! And – those killers are literally from horror movies, as you will find Jason from Friday the 13th Games and Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street.

It’s spooky, scary, and incredibly entertaining. The main concept is simple, you either play as a killer or you are a killer. Players exchange the role of a murderous character from famous horrors and try to kill everyone or escape the ruthless murderer. While doing so, they must repair generators spread out on the map and flee before being hunted down. Co-op play is then pretty straightforward.

In this co-op horror game is pretty intense as the killers are much faster and stronger than players, and hiding before them can be substantially problematic. Each character has different abilities and strengths, so be sure to consider that.

It may not be the easiest of games, and the community is certainly pretty demanding, with different rules set for the players who are veterans and different for newbies. Still, it deserves a high spot on every horror co-op games list.

GTFO

  • Release Date: December, 2019

  • Developer: 10 Chambers

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: 78

GTFO was one of the most awaited first-person shooter horrors ever created and for a reason. The developers from 10 Chambers managed to create something incredibly deep and thrilling simultaneously. The central concept is pretty simple – you are in prison, where The Warden, a mysterious entity, gives out missions for the inmates so that they can earn rewards. No one has ever seen this person or knows their identity.

The best way to play it is in co-op mode with up to four players. Teamwork is essential to survival. You must work together to navigate the complex, gather resources, and fight off the hordes of deadly creatures that inhabit the area.

Overall, it’s a challenging and immersive game that offers a unique blend of horror and action. It is not for the faint of heart, but for those who enjoy a good challenge and cooperative experience, it is well worth checking out.

Phasmophobia

  • Release Date: September, 2020

  • Developer: Kinetic Games

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: N/D

Phasmophobia is the next scary title on our list and is excruciatingly terrifying. It’s designed for up to four players' co-op experiences and revolves around investigating paranormal activity in haunted locations.

You take on the role of paranormal investigators hired to explore houses, schools, and prisons to gather evidence of ghostly activity. Phasmophobia offers a variety of ghost types with unique behaviors and characteristics. You must identify those to determine the type of ghost you are dealing with.

And you can use various tools and gadgets to detect and communicate with them, such as EMF readers, thermometers, spirit boxes, and cameras. To win, you must work together and fight off these haunting revelations.

The game is not yet released in the “full” version, and we still have the early access one, but you can already enjoy it if you have no fear in your heart!

7 Days to Die

  • Release Date: December, 2013

  • Developer: The Fun Pimps

  • Platforms: Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

  • Meta Score: 45

7 Days to Die is an open-world survival game that will make your skin shiver! It’s the post-apocalyptic world taken over by zombies, where you must survive in a harsh environment.

7 Days to Die combines elements of many different genres, from first-person shooters to RPGs and survival games. You can go solo, but playing it cooperatively with up to four players is best. Together you must gather resources, build shelter, and craft tools and weapons to defend yourself against zombie hordes.

The most exciting aspect of this game is the dynamic day and night cycle, with the zombies becoming more aggressive and dangerous at night. Every seventh day, a massive horde of zombies called Blood Moon horde attacks your base, so be sure to be alert during this time!

There are also a lot of customization options, that allow you to modify it to your needs. Additionally, the game is procedurally generated, so each playthrough is unique.

If you enjoy a zombie game of different genres in one package, then 7 Days to Die is definitely for you.

Dead Rising 2

  • Release Date: September, 2010

  • Developer: Capcom Vancouver

  • Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

  • Meta Score: 79

Dead Rising 2 is another zombie game on our list, and definitely not the last one. It takes place in the fictional Fortune City, a Las Vegas-inspired area in the United States. The main story follows Chuck Greene, former motocross champion and avid reality TV show participant. He wants to earn money to buy a life-saving drug for his daughter, who has been bitten by a zombie.

The game is a sandbox that allows you to explore the city and, aside from the main quest, do some side missions like rescuing survivors and fighting zombies. You can use various weapons to defeat them, from traditional ones like guns and knives to unconventional weapons such as chainsaws, boxing gloves with spikes, and a lawnmower.

And the weapon system is what makes this game unique. You can combine different items found throughout the game to create powerful weapons with unique abilities. There is also a great leveling system that allows you to earn experience points by killing zombies and completing missions. With those, you can unlock new abilities and upgrade Chuck's stats, such as health and speed.

Co-op may be a little shaky in this one, as you both play as Chuck basically, but if that does not scare you, similarly to the hordes of zombies, then nothing will.

Resident Evil 5

  • Release Date: March, 2009

  • Developer: Capcom

  • Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows, Shield Android TV, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

  • Meta Score: 86

Resident Evil 5 is another zombie game on our list, and one of the best survival horror game ever created. The main focus of this story is Chris Redfield, a former member of the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.), sent to Kijuju to investigate a bioterrorism threat. His sidekick is the local agent Sheva Alomar.

The gameplay is similar to previous games in the franchise. It’s a third-person perspective action game emphasizing the cooperative mode available online or offline (couch co-op for the win!). The goal is to uncover the secrets of the bioterrorism threat while also not getting killed in the process.

What is new is the inventory system, allowing players to manage and switch weapons on the fly, making it easier to juggle between firearms, grenades, and other items. Another addition is the "partner" system, where you can direct your partner's actions and inventory when playing solo.

When it comes to combat, Resident Evil 5 it’s pretty standard for RE games. One addition we can mention is the ability to melee attack and evasive maneuvers.

It’s definitely a must-play for fans of the Resident Evil series and action-adventure games. Everyone else is also welcome.

Left 4 Dead 2

  • Release Date: November, 2009

  • Developer: Valve

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, Mac OS X, Linux

  • Meta Score: 89

…and another zombie game – Left 4 Dead 2. As you can see, those undead bastards are pretty popular in the genre. It’s a post-apocalyptic world overrun by a pandemic that transforms humans into zombies and not only locks them in the house. You are one of the four survivors who must fight through hordes of infection to reach safety, so up to three players can join you in your fight.

The game is divided into campaigns consisting of several levels. You must work together to complete objectives while fending off waves of infection and avoiding traps and environmental hazards. At the end, you need to get into the safe house while not getting yourself killed by the zombies.

Compared to the first installment, Left 4 Dead 2 introduces new infected enemies, featuring the Charger, Jockey, Spitter, and the uncommon infected with unique abilities and behaviors. Also, there’s a variety of new weapons, including melee ones such as baseball bats, chainsaws, and frying pans, as well as firearms like assault rifles, shotguns, and sniper rifles. It’s a first person shooter game at it’s core.

The best thing about this one is the enemies, though. They move and react to the players' performance and skill level, adjusting themselves accordingly. It makes it so that no two playthroughs are the same.

It’s a fast-paced, intense co-op shooter that requires teamwork, strategy, and quick reflexes to survive. It’s a classic and one of the best in the genre.

Hunt: Showdown

  • Release Date: May, 2018

  • Developer: Crytek

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5

  • Meta Score: 81

Hunt: Showdown is finally a game that does not include zombies. Thankfully! It takes place in the late 1800s in the swamps of Louisiana. You are a group of bounty hunters who must track down and kill supernatural monsters.

The gameplay is pretty simple. Each match consists of up to ten players (or teams of players) who compete against each other to be the first to find and kill the target monster. There are also a lot of mobs to fight off in the process, so it’s a pretty competitive environment for sure.

You start each match with a limited loadout of weapons and equipment. As you progress, you’ll scavenge for better weapons, ammo, and healing items. The scariest part of it is the permadeath mechanic. If you die – you die, and all the equipment you have collected is lost.

This co-op game emphasizes strategy, so engaging in combat or avoiding it is up to you. Choose the best tactics to take down the monsters and other players.

Dead Island

  • Release Date: April, 2016

  • Developer: Techland

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

  • Meta Score: 80

Dead Island – we are back in the zombie genre. It takes place on a tropical island in the aftermath of a zombie outbreak and follows a group of survivors fighting hordes of undead.

You take the role of one of four playable characters, each with unique strengths and abilities. They explore the island, scavenge for supplies, and complete quests to finally take care of the zombie issue.

It’s an open-world adventure with a day/night cycle and dynamic weather conditions that affect the gameplay. During the day, you can explore the island, gather resources, and complete quests, while at night, the zombies become more aggressive.

There are many different melees and ranged weapons, including firearms, blunt objects, and bladed weapons, to fight off the zombies. The best aspect is the crafting system allowing you to creatively create and upgrade weapons and equipment.

If you are a fan of zombie survivals from the Polish Techland company, then you are for a treat with this one. Although, it’s not the last Techland zombie game on our list…

Dying Light 2

  • Release Date: February, 2022

  • Developer: Techland

  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch

  • Meta Score: 77

Here’s Dying Light 2! It’s another post-apocalyptic zombie game set 20 years after the events of the original Dying Light. But, some things stay the same. We return to the old-and-gold parkour-style movement system, allowing you to roam the environment quickly and efficiently. The day/night cycle stays the same, so you can expect unwanted visitors at night.

What changed though is the combat system, with new weapon types, including melee weapons, such as a double-sided axe, but a lot less of the ranged weapons, as they were too overpowered in the first game. Additionally, we get a new grappling hook, which can be used to swing through the map and take down enemies.

What makes the game stand out is the branching narrative system, where your choices and actions might seriously impact the ending. There are multiple factions, and you can choose to side with different ones according to your morality, but it will lead to severe consequences.

Whether it’s a parkour element or the online multiplayer mode, this game is a must-buy. You will probably not be able to find anything as groundbreaking as this one in the zombie genre.

The Forest

  • Developer: Endnight Games

There is a wide variety of creatures, including cannibalistic mutants, capable of strategic decision-making and group tactics. As you progress through the game, the monsters get stronger and stronger so watch out for them in the wilderness.

You can go solo, or choose the multiplayer mode, where up to eight players can play together to survive and explore the island.

If you like survival games with a strong story mode, then this game is a great pick for you.

Killing Floor 2

  • Release Date: November, 2016

  • Developer: Tripwire Interactive

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

  • Meta Score: 79

Next game on our list – that is almost not about the zombies – is Killing Floor 2. It’s a co-op first-person shooter set in continental Europe, where a deadly outbreak of mutated clones, called Zeds, caused chaos and disruption.

In Killing Floor 2 you can create a team of up to six players to battle against waves of Zeds. Each wave gets progressively harder, with stronger enemies in greater numbers. For every Zed, you get some money that you can use to purchase new weapons and gear in order to survive.

There are many classes in Killing Floor 2:

  • Berserker

  • Demolitionist

  • Field Medic

  • Firebug

  • Gunslinger

  • Sharpshooter

  • Survivalist

Each class has different abilities and can influence the battlefield in various ways that complement various types of Zeds.

There is also a Versus mode where you take turns playing as the Zeds and trying to defeat the other players.

It’s fast-paced, incredible action gameplay that will definitely make you feel like you have no tomorrow. But in a good way! Definitely worth checking out!

Don’t Starve Together

  • Release Date: April, 2016

  • Developer: Klei Entertainment

  • Platforms: Android, iOS, Linux, Microsoft Windows, OS X, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

  • Meta Score: 87

Another non-zombie game on our list! It’s Don’t Starve Together, A.K.A. the multiplayer mode of the critically acclaimed Don’t Starve game. In this one, you take the role of various characters stranded in a wilderness filled with monsters, starvation, and insanity. Main goal – to survive, while exploring the surroundings, gathering resources, crafting tools and structures, and hunting for food to survive.

One of the best elements of Don't Starve Together is its extensive crafting system, which allows players to create a wide variety of tools, weapons, and structures using resources that you can gather from the environment. And there are a lot of environments in the game. Each biome has unique resources, creatures, and challenges.

Additionally, there is not only a co-op mode but also a competitive gameplay mode. In co-op, you can work together to survive, while in competitive mode, you compete against each other to see who can survive the longest.

The game is unique and fun, unlike many others in the genre, and should definitely be considered one of the most interesting titles in survival/horror. If you liked playing solo in Don’t Starve, you will surely like the multiplayer edition just as much.

Back 4 Blood

  • Release Date: October, 2021

  • Developer: Turtle Rock Studios

  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

  • Meta Score: 78

But we could not let you live so long without mentioning zombies. Next up on our list is the Back 4 Blood! In the world overrun by a parasitic organism known as the Ridden, which has turned most of the population into zombies, there is a group of brave Cleaners, who are immune to the Ridden's effects and dedicated to fighting back against the hordes of infected!

There are plenty of characters to choose from, each with their unique skills and abilities. You can create your own team with up to 4 players. And – there is no going solo in this game. You need to strategize and coordinate your attacks while utilizing your special abilities to take down the Ridden!

The most novel feature in this game, comparing it to the Left 4 Dead 2, is the card system that allows players to customize their gameplay experience. You can earn or purchase cards with various bonuses and modifiers to them, such as increased health or damage and even additional ammo rounds.

But, the campaign mode is not everything, as there are a lot of different multiplayer modes that you can play when you will get bored with the main campaign. The Swarm Mode is played the most, where players take turns playing as the Ridden and the Cleaners.

In the end, if you liked Left 4 Dead – you will definitely like Back4Blood.

Dead Space 3

  • Release Date: February, 2013

  • Developer: Visceral Games

  • Platforms: PlayStation 3, Windows, Xbox 360

  • Meta Score: 78

Let’s not end with a zombie apocalypse game then, and present to you Dead Space 3. With a remake right around the corner, it’s great to refresh the latest title in the franchise that is still considered to be one of the best survival games ever created.

We once again follow the protagonist Isaac Clarke as he attempts to stop the Necromorph threat once and for all, but this time we are not alone. A new character, a real commando, unlike Issac, steps up to help the engineer to fight off the aliens. Also – it’s a new playable character in the game as well.

This time we are on the ice planet Tau Volantis, searching for the source of the Necromorphs while also fighting hostile human factions and dealing with environmental hazards.

The best addition to the Dead Space 3 is the new weapon crafting system, that allows you to create custom weapons by combining different parts and modifications. And – there is also cooperative multiplayer, allowing players to team up and tackle the campaign together. The co-op mode features unique story missions and objectives, as well as exclusive weapons and equipment.

When it comes to gameplay, we have the old and gold dismemberment mechanic, crazy scary Necromporphs, and overall – a lot of alien murdering on our hands. And although it is not as scary as it was in the first installment, it’s still a gloomy zombie apocalypse game, where  intense atmosphere combined with gruesome enemies, and immersive storytelling is something extremely pleasing to participate in.
