Outlast

You are starting with – Outlast! It’s probably one of the scariest horror games ever created. The world presented in the Mount Massive Asylum is everything but welcoming, as you can experience those claustrophobic corridors of the mental asylum with only a little light. 

The night vision of your video camera is the only way to see what’s in front of you, so it can get pretty scary. You have your jump scares, the feeling of dread coming down your spine, and the uneasiness of this world. It feels like everything can and will try to murder you, so keep that in mind when walking around this god-forsaken place.

Amnesia

On the other hand, we have the Amnesia: Dark Descent. Here, you are experiencing a psychological horror focused on the inner workings of the mind of our protagonist. It’s all about hallucinations, disorientation, the haunting environment of the Brennenburg Castle, and all the other things that you can imagine or the castle offers you. 

It’s less about the jump scares and the sudden movements, but rather the psychological tensions and atmosphere so dense that you can almost cut it with a knife. With the addition of puzzle-solving elements that only add to the feeling of uneasiness and rush, it’s a terrifying experience that you will play with sweat and tears all over you.

Verdict

Both games provide different scaring tactics. The Outlast is all about the pursuit and jump scares, while the Amnesia is creating this psychologically disturbing world that is full of nightmares that may not jump out on you but are deep within your psyche.

It’s hard to pick one game, as the gameplay in both titles is full of fear-inducing moments. So, it’s really up to your preferences. Whether you enjoy being chased around or are much more likely to cherish the wonderful world of high-tension. So, in our opinion, it’s a draw!

Round 2 is about the horrors you encounter on your path, menacing individuals and terrorizing personas. Each game is full of potential problem-makers and creatures from hell. We recommend both games regarding monster design, but check out who wins in this clash.

Outlast

When it comes to the threats, Mount Massive Asylum has a few of those up its sleeve. The primary monsters you will face are called the Variants. Each has a different way of attacking and scaring you away. 

There is The Big Guy, for example, who is a giant that will never stop in pursuit with its brute strength and speed. On the other hand, we have The Twins, who work together to make you as terrified as it’s humanly possible. You will never know where they will come out of. Those characters are unpredictable, so if you want to start playing this game and just chill out, this is a bad idea!

Amnesia

On the other hand, we have Amnesia with the Gatherers. They will chase you through the Brennenburg Castle as souls who are in eternal pursuit, fused with the machinery of the castle. Are they real? Or are they just your imagination? Well, you will have to find out for yourself! They mostly scare you with their presence rather than jump scares, so watch for their design.

Verdict

Which one is the best? Both titles provide you with some tragic moments and unpredictable behaviors from your opponents. As we would likely be more scared by the guys chasing us through some asylum, we cannot underestimate the creativity with which the characters from Amnesia were built. So – Amnesia is our winner in this category!

Another big thing in creating a horrible (but in a good way) horror game is to create a story that will make people invested but fearful. It’s the basis for making or breaking a title, so let’s see which one did it better!

Outlast

Starting with Outlast – it’s the whole big thing with this one. You are in the Mount Massive Asylum, an abandoned psychiatric hospital. As it turns out, the people in charge were not the best of them all, so they were doing terrible things to the inmates. 

You are playing as Miles Upshur, a journalist trying to investigate the asylum and all the horrible things that happened there. While studying, you will encounter its horrors, the real ones and those only in your mind. Among many – there is this mysterious Chris Walker, who may or may not be your friend; we will not spoil that. Your primary objective is to get to the bottom of it while staying alive. The game gives you scoops and pieces of the puzzle here and there, so it’s an all-rounder.

Amnesia

On the other hand, we have Amnesia in the Brennenburg Castle. You are Daniel, who, as you can imagine, wakes up with amnesia. You don’t know what happened, so you are trying to piece the puzzles together to find out what’s going on. 

You seem to have performed something terrible, but you have erased it from your memory with an ancient artifact. Your goal is to redeem yourself, find your memories, and get to the bottom of everything while avoiding Alexander, a sinister baron who is all about occultism.

Verdict

In our opinion, both games are phenomenal for creating an uneasy space of tragic situations and even more tragic outcomes. We cannot tell you whether or not we like the adventure of an excellent detective or someone who is desperately trying to discover more about their identity connected to some ancient cult. So, it’s a draw in our book!

Another clash on our list is the visuals of both games. Both titles have some of the most incredible graphic design elements and are among the best in the genre. Everything is designed with the utmost attention to detail. So, let’s see which title did it better!

Outlast

The details in the world of Mount Massive Asylum are brimming with realism. Everything is decaying, dirty and difficult to navigate. The dimly lit corridors, the light changing constantly – everything is crafted to evoke just the right level of scariness. The enemies are grotesque but full of crazy changes to their bodies due to the experiments that they were forced to do.

Amnesia

In Amnesia, you'll find gothic-style buildings that are both beautiful and eerie. The rooms are full of wealth but also sadness and fear. The castle is designed with great detail, as well as the darkness used in the game. 

Dynamic visuals and lighting are two of the key scary elements in this game; the flickering of light creates an atmosphere of unease. Additionally, everything about the monsters in the game gives you this feeling of them being humans, but not quite. It’s an uncanny valley all over it. Additionally, it’s a pretty artistic game, so you will enjoy a lot of howling images that have something artistic to them.

Verdict

In our opinion, it’s really hard to differentiate between the realism of Outlast vs. the magical world of Amnesia. It’s definitely up to your very own individual approach. Whether it’s brutality you enjoy the most or something more magical, you will be drawn to either Amnesia or Outlast. In our opinion, it’s definitely a draw between those two.

Finally, we have the sound/music category. It’s one of the most important ones, as it is oftentimes the music that is responsible for horror elements and the atmosphere of the game. So, let’s see which title did it better.

Outlast

Starting with Outlast, the audio is just phenomenal. All of the floor cravings, screams from a distance, and everything in this dark ambient world is full of strange and unsettling sounds. The feeling of danger is all over you, so make sure to listen to everything happening. Additionally, the key in this game is silence. When everything goes quiet, you can bet that something will suddenly come out of nowhere to hunt you.

The music is minimal, subtle, and full of ambient tracks that create an eerie atmosphere and traditional music. It’s not a lot, but you can hear it as it approaches you!

Amnesia

In Amnesia, you have something similar yet different. The audio is immersive and full of weird sounds that create the feeling of uneasiness and isolation. Additionally, you need to try to find out every single murmur and footsteps. But remember that the audio can sometimes disorient players, as it aims to cause you some paranoia in the process. In our opinion, it’s key to listen to those sounds if you would like to come out alive.

Verdict

Both games are astonishing when it comes to creating suspenseful and fearful environments full of potential problems and monsters coming your way. Outlast is all about ambient sounds and delicate situations, with a huge emphasis on silence. On the other hand, Amnesia is all about the environmental sounds and the haunting music in the castle. In our opinion, the horror experience in Amnesia is much more detailed and haunting than Outlast.

And here we have the winner! Amnesia is the game you just need to play in order to make the most ouf of it all. We definitely encourage you to utilize both of those titles to the best of your abilities, but the choice is yours. We are all about that horror feeling, so if you are up for some scares – both of these games will allow you to get scared, get frightened, and most importantly – get some great emotions!
