What is Spiritfarer?

What is Spiritfarer?
  • Developer : Thunder Lotus Games

  • Release Date : August 2020

  • Platforms : PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, macOS, Linux

  • Meta Score: 84

Let’s start with a little clarification first, though, as it’s important to find out what exactly I’m talking about if you have never heard of this game. So, you are a Spiritfarer who travels the world far and wide in order to gather the spirits and get them safely to their afterlife. It’s based heavily on Greek mythology and the Charon figure. The game details the journey of many different creatures as you, Stella, a ferrymaster, take them to their destinations.

During this time, you will build an even better boat and talk with the spirits about their time in the real world. It’s a cozy management game where you can talk with some pretty interesting creatures about the afterlife, what it means to be alive, and what kind of life you should opt for! The story is heartwarming and memorable, with dozens of fantastic characters and a stylized adventure that you will never forget!

As you take on the role of Stella, you'll uncover fascinating stories about your passengers while managing your boat and resources. Throughout the game, you'll cook meals, upgrade your vessel, and ensure the safe passage of both passengers and cargo to their destination.

You can opt for a single-player experience or go for a local co-op king of fun where you collect resources together and experience this wonderful world with no cell reception in tandem. You can also opt for Builder mode, where you focus on creating the perfect boat without any restrictions whatsoever. It’s a fantastic experience, and I cannot praise this game enough, but let’s see what some similar titles are that you can check out after mastering the game.

Cozy Grove

Cozy Grove
  • Developer : Spry Fox LLC

  • Release Date : April 2021

  • Platforms : PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, iOS, Nintendo Switch

  • Meta Score: 71

When it comes to wonderful art style and even more creative stories, you cannot go wrong with Cozy Grove! If you want a feel-good game that also teaches you about humanity – this is the game for you. And everyone compares it to Spiritfarer, so it’s a sure thing if you’d like to play something similar. The concept of this game is pretty simple – it’s a relaxing life-sim that allows you to create a connection with other creatures and have some non-competitive time on your console or PC.

For starters – this game looks incredible. It has amazing hand-drawn graphics that you will not see in any other games you can think of. Additionally, you will have a similar outward experience to what you may have experienced in the Spiritfarer, as you play as the Spirit Scout. You are wandering the village looking for treasures and helping other spirits. Although each one has some story to tell, you won’t get bored when talking to them and resolving their problems.

The game takes around 40 hours to beat, so it’s not the shortest of adventures, but it’s a time and money well-spent for sure. Journeying through the woods and spending nights in the open world, this game offers more than just entertainment; it's also beneficial for your mental well-being. I found it incredibly relaxing and couldn't get enough of the numerous side quests and activities. In our opinion, it's one of the most laid-back adventures around, and if you're a Spiritfarer enthusiast, you'll surely enjoy it.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • Release Date: March 2020

  • Developer : Nintendo

  • Platform(s) : Switch

  • Meta Score: 90

Next, we have Animal Crossing, a game that is the grandfather of all of the above. At least, the great spreader of this genre. Animal Crossing got a lot of traction during the pandemic, when everyone was sitting at home, so being able to create your very own home, plant some flowers in the garden, and whatnot – felt like a must-do!

The gameplay here is rather straightforward, as you will go on a quest of…casual decoration! That’s right; this is the game where you will truly be able to create the house you have always wanted to get, as this life-sim gives you even more advanced decorating options than The Sims! Here, you will find an island full of like-minded people who love to decorate houses and show them to each other.

This game is as casual as it gets, and every young woman in 2020 was playing this game on her phone. And as every guitar note counts in a song, every single decoration counts on your lawn. This game has everything – community, people interacting with each other, lots of details that you can show and even – sell for profit! As it turns out, you can sell your crops and get even crazier decorations for your Bells – the in-game currency. Additionally, as you finish the Nook Miles, you will be able to get even more impressive rewards for your troubles.

If you liked Spiritfarer and its leisure character, this game is definitely worth checking out. And, it’s pretty easy to enter, hard to master kind of thing, so you can either have some casual fun OR GRIND! We all know which one is better.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley
  • Release date: February 2016

  • Developer : ConcernedApe

  • Platform(s) : PC, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One, Switch

  • Meta Score: 89

Another game, another tale – it’s Stardew Valley! Where emotions run high, and you can’t escape the feeling that it could be a part of a much darker story, but besides that – it’s a tale of friendship, taking care of the inherited land and family, and just having a job. What a game it is – 20 million copies sold, dozens of imitators, and a sensational game all over the world! Can you find a better example of marketing done right?

At first glance, it’s a peaceful game where you can farm some crops, go fishing, and just live a life on a farm. And that’s precisely what it is. Still, there’s some plot in there as well. With so many narrative elements to explore, I cannot just get enough of those stories. I won’t get into all of those, but let us tell you – you can get married and have kids, but most importantly – you can get some oranges. And that’s where the magic happens.

The story's pretty simple. You suddenly inherit a farm, and it's all on you to keep it running. But weirdly enough, after a while, it starts feeling like home. And gameplay-wise, it's all about tending to crops, watering them, watching them grow. It's like a metaphor for managing life, but most folks just see it as, "Hey, gotta take care of them crops!"

Stardew Valley is an excellent mix of sim and farming game, and I am more than happy to present it to you. It’s one of the best-known games in the genre, so you just have to try it!

Townscaper

Townscaper
  • Developer : Oskar Stålberg

  • Release Date : August 2021

  • Platforms : Microsoft Windows, macOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Web Browser

  • Meta Score: 84

Here’s another gem you can dive into: Townscaper. it’s another game created by a single developer that has a much greater scope than the previous installment. It does not mean this one is better or worse, it’s just different. So, round up your buddies and let's delve into the amazing journey of building a town.

We've had a blast with crops and houses, but ever thought about building an entire town in a game? Enter Townscaper – where you can do exactly that! Just plop down a block here and there, and watch as life blossoms around it in no time. Each block adds its own colors and inhabitants to the town, and as you explore, you'll feel like a god to these little folks. Well, maybe more like a mayor, but close enough!

You can create crazy towns with streets you always wanted to see, giant cathedrals in small villages, skyscrapers near huts, and much, much more!

Honestly, this game is more of an exploration of the concept of creating a town on your own. Everything is well put together; it’s fun to chill and stroll around, so we definitely recommend this one if you feel like Spiritfarer was a game for you.

Eternal Hope

Eternal Hope
  • Developer : Double Hit Games

  • Release Date : August 2020

  • Platforms : Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: 69

Next, we have the Eternal Hope, a story about losing someone, and also magic and wonders. In this installment of chillax gaming, we are entering the Shadow World as Ti’bi, a boy who tries to save the love of his life.

It’s a game that will please your heart and also tear it to shreds. The obstacles that the boy is willing to overcome and get his desired lover back are incredible. It’s frustrating, emotional, and full of heart and soul, to be honest, as all the great games are.

It’s much less chill than most games on this list, as it’s a puzzle platformer at heart, but it’s still a slow-paced game that you don’t have to think a lot about; you can just enjoy it while it lasts. Additionally, there are some difficult jumps to get over, so if you think it will be a walk in the park – it’s more of a walk in the park with a few stones to get through.

Additionally, this game is stunning when it comes to visuals. It’s one of those games that are so pleasing to the eyes that you could just walk around and look at all the wonders the developers came up with. Of course, it’s not why it was made, but you can certainly enjoy a little bit of sightseeing as well! We are dealing here with your lover being lost though, so to make your future relationships work, you have to take care of this! Progress at your own pace, survive, and become the hero that you always thought you’d be!

Ori and the Blind Forest

Ori and the Blind Forest
  • Developer : Moon Studios

  • Release Date : March 2015

  • Platforms : Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: 90

Last but certainly not least, we have the one and only—Ori and the Blind Forest. This game is an absolute standout. You find yourself playing for hours on end, mastering every theme, solving every puzzle, and yet, you're still yearning for more. Now, that's what I call one heck of a game!

Dangers lurk everywhere, and you are the only one who can stop the growth of evil in this realm. The world of Nibel is now dying because of the mysterious attack. The Spirit Tree power that was supposed to take care of everything begins to die out, and you need to find out what is going on and solve the mystery before it’s too late. Of course, while also finding all the collectibles.

The story, the world, everything in this game just screams – please, explore me a little bit more! In the age where video games are too overcrowded with possibilities, Ori has just the right amount of self-reflection and platforming elements to let you chill and have some fun.
