Heavy Rain should come right up your alley if you want a more mature and mystery-focused storyline. It’s an interactive movie where every decision counts; a well-written detective drama, where four protagonists are trying to track down a serial killer responsible for the death of countless children.

It features some elements of an action-adventure game as you’re going to collect clues, solve puzzles, and encounter tons of quick-time events. Unfortunately, gameplay mechanics are clunky and don't hold up to today’s standards. Sometimes, your character can die just because you didn’t complete a few quick-time events. On a positive note, the game still continues, but it will affect the ending you’ll get.

Nevertheless, the story alone makes Heavy Rain worth playing and rewards your patience if you stick with it. Once you reach a certain point, you simply can’t let go of the interesting stories behind every character and their personal motives.

Although it’s a PlayStation exclusive title, the decision-making aspect of Until Dawn is probably the most developed out of all games on this list. Being a horror game, it presents you with choices and quick-time events that mean life or death for the eight friends trapped in the god-forsaken place. 

On the surface, it sounds like every cliche horror movie, but different outcomes of your decisions will surprise you and can even be jaw-dropping. Each choice affects the course of the game, and from time to time, you’ll face important dilemmas that significantly impact the whole story. 

Until Dawn doesn't forgive mistakes, our choices are final. If you make the wrong decision and the character you’re directing dies, he’s gone for good. There’s even a possibility that all of them will die. 

Overall, Until Dawn offers a hundred different outcomes, and a single crossing of the campaign takes about 9 hours. Despite being completely different games, they share some similarities. The main protagonist can freely manipulate time, and the final outcome relies heavily on your decisions during gameplay. Similar to Life is Strange, you’ll follow the story of two protagonists.

The narrative presented in Quantum Break is shown through actual gameplay and cinematic cutscenes made with motion capture techniques. It's nothing extraordinary nowadays, but in 2016 it was quite impressive.

While gameplay focuses mainly on the positive hero, the antagonist’s story is shown through cutscenes, and you can play as him occasionally. Either way, you’ll be intertwined in action-packed sequences, numerous plot twists, and various mysteries. Bend time as you will, shape destiny, and change everyone’s fate. Nathan Dawkins (Willem Dafoe), a specialist in paranormal phenomena, helps Jodie to understand her place in the world.

You’ll be taking control of both Jodie and Aiden, who can aid or hinder her journey. Whenever she wants to live a normal life, she’s often caught in a web of difficult choices. Are you familiar with Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner? Detroit: Become Human takes plenty from it. Playing as three human-like androids, you will often face moral dilemmas bringing you closer to humanity or a cold-blooded machine based on your choices.

People are scared of them because they’re afraid of an uprising. Some of them ignited a riot to break free from human authority and chose to live independently. It’s up to you if you crush the rebellion or make the machines world-changing masters.

This futuristic, strange universe is compelling, and you can truly put yourself in the situation of human-like androids wanting independence. All three playable characters can die during the story. The game doesn’t end but switches to the other one if it happens. 

With thousands of choices and dozens of possible endings, you will shape the future of Detroit and the fate of its residents. Its robust and gripping narrative is phenomenal, and it’s hard to get away from the screen until you see the end credits.

The game takes place in 2099, where Earth is divided into two worlds: magical Arcadia and futuristic Stark. April Ryan, the main protagonist, has a vision of the inevitable destruction of both worlds. With that terrifying knowledge, April must decide: ignore the imminent threat or undertake the eponymous journey to prevent the disaster?

The Longest Journey consists of thirteen chapters, and the gameplay is based on the typical point & click adventure mechanics, focusing on exploration and conversations with NPCs. Each of them has a distinct personality and its own story. 

Numerous cutscenes and the girl's personal journal can help you connect the story's complexities. The game takes us to the fictional town Delos Crossing in Alaska. We follow the story of two characters – Alyson and her transgender brother Tyler. After ten years of separation, they return to their hometown to recall their difficult childhood and unravel the mysteries of their past. 

The siblings share a special bond, and their fate depends on your decisions. The game is driven by memories of critical moments in the characters' lives; how they remember them will affect their future lives and relationships.

The key part of the gameplay revolves around analyzing multiple versions of events and deciding which one you choose to believe. There are also puzzles to solve and two main endings depending on your choices.

The Dark Pictures Anthology is an interactive drama series that consists of three installments at the time of writing. Little Hope is the latest one, and it's a survival horror similar to Until Dawn.

 The story follows four students accompanied by their lecturer, who find themselves in the town of Little Hope. The place is shrouded in an ominous fog, and though it seems deserted, it soon becomes apparent that dark forces have taken over. The protagonists find themselves trapped, and while looking for a way to escape, they have to face terrifying visions of a 17th-century witch hunt and nightmares lurking in the darkness.

The gameplay in The Dark Pictures: Little Hope was based on the scheme developed for the studio's previous games, especially Man of Medan. The action is presented from various cinematic angles, and during the game, we take control of several characters. They wander gloomy locations, face occasional arcade challenges, and solve uncomplicated puzzles. 

In addition, we often make difficult choices during the game that affect the course of the story. Our decisions also determine which protagonists survive and how their adventure will end. So if you’re willing to see everything that the authors have prepared, you have to finish the game many times. In this regard, the game is developed even better than Life Is Strange.

You’re playing as Alex, a teenager who sets up a party with her friends on Edwards Island. At first, the trip goes as planned, but after some time, the teenagers witness strange phenomena – unnatural sounds, apparitions, a radio receiving nonexistent stations. A moment later, it turns out that Alex and her friends have accidentally opened the gate to another dimension. This is where the source of reality distortions, ghosts, and other kinds of terrifying anomalies plaguing the newcomers lies.

The gameplay is mainly based on conversations, interacting with other characters, and exploring the island. It also has a unique feature, where conversations occur through speech bubbles during regular gameplay. You can choose a specific dialogue, ignore it completely, or even interrupt your conversationalist. Of course, every action has its consequences and will eventually lead to several main endings.
