Games Like Battlefield – Find Your New Favorite War Shooter
What Is Battlefield 2042?
Release Date: October 2021
Developer: DICE
Platforms: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows
Meta Score: 68/100
But first, let’s take a look at the old Battlefield 2042. Is it as bad as people make it out to be? Or is there something about it nowadays, after so many months of development and updates? Well, there is a light of hope! After so many patches, it turns out that this team-based, modern shooter with vehicle combat and fast-paced action behind enemy lines is a great game.
The plot is rather obvious. The big red bear – Russia is at war with the United States. The sea levels are rising, Germany is bankrupt, economies are collapsing, and even the satellites are gone, so we have no Netflix. World War II was nothing compared to this crisis. So, how do we get around it? Well, let’s put some bullets into play and ravage our enemies!
In this installment of “Get a vehicle and shoot at the enemy,” also known as Battlefield moments we cherish, we have everything we would want to play shooters in the modern day. There’s a realistic portrayal of what guns would look like in the near future: vehicles in the air, land, and sea. Additionally, we have the classic four classes that you can assume control of, with Assault, Engineer, Medic, and Recon, each with different skills and gadgets.
There are three main modes in Battlefield 2042: All-Out-Warfare, Breakthrough and Conquest. The first one is everything that Conquest and Breakthrough have combined. Conversely, Conquest is a staple in the franchise, where you need to control points in a sector, while Breakthrough is capturing the other team’s control points. You know it's mayhem with up to 128 players on the map.
There are two new modes with Battlefield Portal, where you can customize methods and select maps from previous Battlefield games, and Hazard Zones, where you retrieve data from fallen satellites against other teams.
Is it good? In our opinion, team play is excellent; the issues with connectivity and bugs are pretty much taken care of, so if you want the original game without problems – this one can help you.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Release Date: November 2023
Developer: Sledgehammer Games
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
Meta Score: N/D
In this case, we must say we cheated a little bit. We have decided to put unreleased (at the moment of writing this article) Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. Why? Well, there is free-to-play Warzone, and people have played each Call of Duty game for years, so it was only reasonable to get you the latest and greatest of them all. The re-imagined Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Will it be the best Cal of Duty game ever? Well, in our opinion, as we played the beta version, it’s up there with the greats.
In this installment, we return to classic Modern Warfare locations like Verdansk, Kastovia, and Urzikstan. We are facing Vladimir Makarov again to finally take care of his evil doings and save the world from the global catastrophe. In addition to existing linear storytelling, you will also experience Open Combat Missions, where you can decide how you want to approach the topic and finish the objectives.
Moreover, all maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will be available in multiplayer, with some new ones. You will get all the classic game modes like Kill Confirmed and Hardpoint and some new ones like Cutthroat, where you will fight against the other team to finish the objective first. Also – Zombie mode will come back, so be sure to check this one.
The beta version was full of surprises, but we feel it will be an incredible title after what we’ve seen, and you should look for it in a store if you want to find similar games to Battlefield.
Star Wars: Battlefront II
Release Date: November 2017
Developer: DICE
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Meta Score: 68/100
But if not, you can always go to space! Star Wars: Battlefront II provides you with a unique opportunity to explore various places in the Star Wars universe, but not from the point of view of the main characters, but rather those on the back seat during all these crazy adventures. You will see Endor, Naboo, Jakku, and many more!
But what makes this game so interesting is that you will also get to fight in epic battles in space without resorting to Force or lightsabers. In this game, you will be mostly fighting with guns and grenades.
The primary campaign occurs during Return of the Jedi when the Galactic Civil War occurs, up to 29 years after, right before The Force Awakens events. In the game, you have four soldier classes to choose from, never mind the side you are on – Assault, Heavy, Officer, and Specialist, and three starfighter classes – Fighter, Interceptor, and Bomber. You get to fight on the ground or in the space battles. The second part is exciting, as flying in the spaceship and shooting enemies is highly entertaining in this one.
If you want a game like Battlefield, but you would like to try not a near future but a very, very distant future/past, it’s one of those great games you never tried. And that’s the best way to try it out now!
Escape From Tarkov
Release Date: July 2017
Developer: Battlestate Games
Platforms: Microsoft Windows
Meta Score: N/D
Next up, we have the famous Escape From Tarkov. When it comes to war simulation games, there is just nothing as advanced as this one. You will get to engage in a real-life scenario, like if it was a war, and build and customize your weapons. It’s incredibly realistic and was approved by many gun enthusiasts as being as close to the real-life stuff as possible!
For example, you don’t just see how many bullets you have left. You need to check the magazine and count them. Additionally, there is no health system where you can check your remaining percentage points of life. If you are bleeding, you need to take care of it. If you get shot in the limb, you may stumble before it gets healed.
Moreover, the game has an incredible ballistics model, showing the ricochets and how bullets penetrate the body. Even more realistically, you can see each item you get from your scavenging as they appear during the search. Of course, as with any good simulator, you must also take care of your necessities, like water and energy, to continue playing.
The whole thing takes place in the fictional Tarkov in Russia. As usually happens in this part of the world, corruption, scandals, and social breakdown created a mess where people joined different factions in the town. You have nine maps to choose from, where you can start your adventure and fight against the Others. It’s Battlefield on steroids, so if you like this thing, you should definitely check it out!
Arma 3
Release Date: September 2013
Developer: Bohemia Interactive
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, MacOS, Linux
Meta Score: 74/100
Speaking of realistic shooters – the next title on our list is Arma 3. It’s another simulation more than a real thing, where you get to shoot some pretty accurate-looking weapons against some realistic enemies.
As you may have guessed, the plot is pretty standard at this point. There was a civil war and plenty of factions to join; you know the drill already, right? The plot itself is not the most crucial element of this game, as you can never get to the plot and still have a lot of fun with this title.
What makes this one particularly exciting is the realism that it gives out. It’s a shooter full of accurate weapons with an incredibly realistic way of using those. Trust us, as we have played tons of it back in the day, and let us tell you – you will never look the same at your everyday shooters after playing this one. Of course, it makes it much more demanding, as it is harder to hit a target when you have lots and lots of real-life problems with your gun.
Nevertheless, Arma 3 is a wonderful shooter, with helicopter fights, combat vehicles, boats, and everything you would want from a Battleflied-like game. So, hop on, and let’s meet in the warzone!
Titanfall 2
Release Date: October 2016
Developer: Respawn Entertainment
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Meta Score: 89/100
And now, for something completely different, we have Titanfall 2. This game is a reminder that we should cherish the things we have, as we may wish for them to return to us. Titanfall 2 is a critically acclaimed game, a direct sequel to the fantastic Titanfall, and, unfortunately, a game that created the Apex Legends franchise. Why unfortunately? Well, because we will never get the third installment of it. And that’s a shame.
Titanfall 2 is a fantastic multiplayer game with a tremendous single-player mode as well. The basic concept is pretty simple: you get to choose your equipment and weapons like in most games in the genre, but there’s a twist. Actually, there are two twists. The first one is – you are a Pilot, an incredibly agile trained soldier. You can walk on walls, glide, use a grappling hook, and become invisible. You are essentially the perfect soldier. The other twist, though, is that after killing enough enemies and getting enough points, you get to summon a giant mech from the sky. And not only that - your personal mech, that you can customize to your needs, as there are plenty to choose from. A tank, a DPS, and even a healer of sorts.
Titanfall 2 is a wonderful game for people of all ages, and it’s a shame that we will not get anything more from Respawn Entertainment. Well, at least we have this one.
Hell Let Loose
Release Date: July 2021
Developer: Current: Cover 6 Studios, Expression Games, Previous: Black Matter
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
Meta Score: 84/100
Coming back to more traditional games, we have the Hell Let Loose. It is a game like no other on our list and similar to most of them at the same time. Why? Well, it utilizes many innovative mechanics but is still essentially a multiplayer shooter at its core.
The games are quite enormous, with 50 soldiers against another 50 soldiers from armies all over the world: Germans, Americans, Soviets, British, Finnish, and Polish forces. There are essentially two game modes: Warfare and Offensive. In both of them, you need to find and control a sector on the map while the other team tries to do the same. Because of the scope, it’s a regular war out there, with people dying all the time.
One of the key elements of this game is the communication aspect. Teams are led by officers who can utilize the leadership voice channel in order to give orders and talk to people. It gives a greater immersion feel to the game and allows you to strategize more effectively.
Moreover, there is an RTS element to this game, as the Commanders decide which resources will be the most important in this part of the game and where we should invest our points as a group. There is a lot of settling in this game, so if you like this aspect of warfare, then Hell Let Loose is definitely a game for you.
Squad
Release Date: September 2020
Developer: Offworld Industries
Platforms: Microsoft Windows
Meta Score: N/D
Next up, we have the Squad. Similarly to the previous one, it’s also a tactical shooter with a great emphasis on teamwork. There are two teams for each match, with nine players in each team. Each squad member decides who they want to be in combat. It’s pretty important as it will determine the outcome of the whole game if your team is balanced or not.
The roles are pretty standard; we have a couple of different soldiers to choose from, a medic and even an anti-tank gunner. Each squad has a leader who communicates with other leaders from friendly squads. Moreover, after a leader nominates themselves to become a commander, they will be able to decide on artillery and UAV support.
Additionally, the games are being played on extremely large spots, so you will have a lot of tracking and searching to do in order to find your enemy. Fortunately, you will get to utilize many different vehicles in order to catch the other squads, like transport trucks, tanks, and many more.
There is also a ticket system in the game that pushes everything forward. If you lose a vehicle or a comrade, you get some tickets removed from your pool. If you lose all of your tickets, you lose the game.
It gives you the opportunity to not only win the game by killing all the enemies but also sabotaging their base, trucks, and many other different ways. If you like a game where you need to think and think fast at that, Squad is definitely the one for you. It’s a first-person shooter for the demanding ones!
