Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the second chapter of the Star Wars Jedi saga that began with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in 2019, providing a new approach to the classic stories in the galaxy far, far away.

Survivor occurs ten years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, i.e., after Order 66, a meticulous plan that looked to exterminate most Jedi knights and the Jedi Academy from the galaxy. Now, you control the young Jedi outcast, Cal Kestis, in his attempt to survive the tough iron glove of the Galactic Empire ruled by Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine.

Survivor takes the best of its direct predecessor, Fallen Order, such as the real-time combat and special abilities with the lightsaber and the force. However, it delves deeper into these mechanics and improves them in most cases. In Survivor, the lightsaber combat reaches the top among all the Star Wars games and feels strictly realistic. Besides, Cal Kestis is now able to release new powerful force abilities, which increase the excitement and lead to the border of the magnificent combat mechanics against powerful bosses.

I know that returning to the era of the Old Republic, before the realm of the Galactic Empire, is not an everyday journey. However, with the following six titles, you will experience similar gameplay in different contexts and stories.

The first game on this list does not occur in a futuristic world – indeed, Star Wars takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away – but in a feudal Japanese context where threats, dark forces, and an evil empire abound equally.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a Souls game, which differentiates it from Jedi: Survivor from the first moment, which is an action-adventure. Still, the two titles have a similar focus on sword fighting and plot, as in both games, you control an outcast character trying to survive circumstances and take revenge on an iconic enemy with a noble weapon.

Of course, in Sekiro, you are not a fallen warrior of the Jedi Order but a mythical knight with the same sword skills. This is crucial in a title where combat is really tough, and bosses can kill in one hit. In this sense, the action of the lightsaber is very similar to the action of the katana in Sekiro.

Like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Sekiro introduces only a few role-playing elements that give a superficial coat of paint to the overall game. However, the possibility of improving the mechanics invites you to maximize your skills to defeat the bosses without wasting time. Additionally, neither Survivor nor Sekiro encompasses open-world progression. Instead, they surround linear, controlled areas that you must cross to reach a specific point.

It's pretty obvious why Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II is similar to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, right? However, even though both titles take place in the same universe and time of the Galactic Empire, they also have some differences worth mentioning.

The Force Unleashed II is a more dynamic and spectacular game than Survivor since The Force II focuses on impressive action and explosive interactions between Starkiller, the protagonist, stormtroopers, droids, other enemies, and the force. However, a big difference between The Force and Jedi Survivor is that The Force stars a character very close to the dark side of the Force. It makes him use his powers in the most devastating way possible, while Cal Kestis is a young Jedi Knight with a lot to learn.

In my opinion, the lightsaber action and use of the Force are done better in The Force Unleashed II. Attacks feel more organic and precise like you're controlling a real Jedi Master in the middle of the battle of Geonosis. Simply put, the fight in The Force Unleashed II is God and on another level.

In The Force Unleashed II, you are not a real hero, and it may no longer be canon – since the sale of Star Wars to Disney – but it is still a good story and a great game that every Star Wars fan should try.

Dark Souls 3 is the culmination of the Souls genre, serving as a fitting conclusion to the Dark Souls series. It laid the groundwork for future titles like Elden Ring, which emerged six years later. It's worth noting that Elden Ring can be seen as an expansion of the concepts introduced in Dark Souls 3, pushed to their limits.

If you’ve played other Souls games, then you know what to expect when you play Dark Souls 3. You will face undead, deadly creatures, juggernauts, giant monsters, and specters from the past in a magical and devastated world inspired by the Middle Ages. Tomb Raider also includes a narrative similar to what you'll find in Survivor, as it is strictly related to progression through levels and mysteries that you unravel along the way. Both narratives also feature continually spawning characters that inform the story, allowing Lara and Cal to interact with new and interesting personalities that bring out their most interesting sides.

Eternity: The Last Unicorn probably isn't the best action-adventure RPG of all time, but it's still an enjoyable adventure reminiscent of games like The Legend of Zelda, The Witcher, and Dark Souls. In this way, Eternity takes up the classic mechanics of old role-playing titles, uniting them to build a new journey through a Norse mythological world with lots of magic, magical creatures, and enchanting settings.

Even though Eternity and Survivor seem miles away from each other, the gameplay in Eternity provides a similar sense of adventure through unknown and desolate environments as the planets in Survivor. This general feeling is quite similar to what you can find in other RPGs like Fallout or The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim by Bethesda Game Studios, where continuous discovery and plot development go hand in hand with the crumbling of the map.

In any case, the first has been acclaimed for its well-achieved mix of role-playing elements and a hack-and-slash combat style – like the one found in the classic God of War – that shines for its forcefulness and convincing mechanics.

The real-time fighting moments against mercenaries, guardians, culprits, monsters, and dragons provide a feel similar to that of Jedi Survivor, with mechanics that depend on the time, power, skills, and weapons you have.

Like other RPG titles with deeper interactions, in Dragon's Dogma, you can grab and drop objects, enemies, and even NPCs to attack and destroy items on the map, which is really fun if you think about it. Furthermore, the plot is magnificent, presenting a deep conflict that is worth experiencing, even for the first time.
