Game development has come a long way since Pong or Tetris began. Nowadays, it’s so much easier to find a fun game that you can casually play with a fantastic design that is not Mario Kart. Nevertheless, we have prepared a treat for all of you, starting with video gaming. We understand that it can be stressful, and getting your feet right into some seven layers of playing the game you found on Game Pass may not be a perfect solution to all your problems. That’s why we have selected some of the most exciting titles in the gaming industry that can be done in a few hours or are just so simple to go through. So, if you liked this idea and want to see more – check out our list!

Minecraft

  • Release Date: November 2011

  • Developer(s): Mojang Studios

  • Platform(s) Windows, macOS, Linux

  • Meta Score: 93

Let’s start with something obvious – Minecraft. If you have never heard of it, we don’t believe you, but as non-gamers say – what’s this? Let us explain. It’s only the most popular (arguably) game in gaming history. Even though it was released in 2011, it is still being played, and people are still buying servers to enjoy this one with their friends.

What’s the fuss all about? You live in a LEGO-like world where literally anything you see can be transformed into resources. If you see a tree – you can chop it up and get wood. Dirt is, well, dirt. Stone is stone, etc. The point is that you can gather those resources to build other things. Some people are getting extremely good at this, with portraits of the Mona Lisa or the whole castles being created in Minecraft.

But, as a beginner, you can treat it as a walking simulator with some additional survival elements. There are a few modes you can play this game:

  • Survival Mode – here, it’s all about getting resources to, in the end, survive. You must build a house, as the night is for the ZOMBIES! That’s right; if you can’t get into a place before sunlight, you can be sure you will end up dead and strained.

  • Creative Mode – Next, we have what’s called a creative mode. Here. You have unlimited resources so that you can do whatever you want. Indeed, it’s an excellent way to start with gaming as a whole, a sort of beginner’s guide to the whole thing.

  • Adventure Mode – Next, we have the adventure mode. Here, you have some puzzles to solve with different difficulty levels, a storyline, and other challenges. It’s pretty exciting after you get the gist of it.

It’s a great game to start with, as it allows people to get slowly into the gaming world while also allowing them to show their creative side!

Batman: Arkham Collection

  • Release Date: Eidos Interactive (2009), Warner Bros. Games (2009–present)

  • Developer(s): Rocksteady Studios, WB Games Montréal, Splash Damage, Human Head Studios, NetherRealm Studios, Armature Studio, Turbine, Inc.

  • Platform(s): Windows, macOS, Linux

  • Meta Score: 74-94

Batman: Arkham Collection is the next game on our list, and what a game it is! We picked it up simply because it has characters from popular culture, so most people who are not into gaming can also understand it. And in addition to that, it’s just an entertaining game to play and pretty easy to master. With this collection, you are getting three games in one.

  • Batman: Arkham Asylum – This is the game that started it all! Batman is arriving at Arkham Asylum to take on Joker (famously voiced by Mark Hamil) and other villains to restore Arkham to its glory. You will find many familiar characters in this one, but the best thing is the gameplay. Here, you will get to sneak around, attack enemies where they least suspect it, and fight off the bad guys using bat accessories and your fists. The game is entertaining, so we hope you will find something you like.

  • Batman: Arkham City – The second game in this bundle is arguably the best one on this list. With multiple awards on its back, Arkham City adds to the craziness created in the first game. It also allows you to roam freely around Arkham and throughout the whole area nearby in a walled-off section of Gotham. This is the sequel done right, so try this one as well.

  • Batman: Arkham Knight – Finally, we have the Batman: Arkham Knight, the conclusion to the whole series. It also develops on the ideas from the previous games, like adding a tank to gameplay and a long-awaited ending to the story. It’s an exciting adventure, and the identity of Arkham Knight may surprise some of you!

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series

  • Release Date: 2012-2019

  • Developer(s): Telltale Games

  • Platform(s):  Android, iOS, Kindle Fire HDX, OS X, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Ouya, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One

  • Meta Score: 89

Telltale's The Walking Dead is completely different. Beginners will surely enjoy how cinematic and accessible it is to navigate when it comes to control. This game is a story told in interactive episodes where you can decide what happens to all the other characters. If you have never seen the show or the graphic novel, here’s what it’s all about. The undead take over the world. Here, they call them “walkers.” You need to survive the harsh conditions and try to get out of there as soon as possible.

The best thing about those games is that you get to experience the storytelling in real-time while also being able to make all decisions and influence the reality of the situation. There are essentially four seasons of this game:

  • The Walking Dead: Season One (2012) – here, we get to know the main character, Lee Everett, taking care of Clementine, a young girl who got lost in the zombie apocalypse. Here, you need to make choices and decisions based on what you feel is correct at the time. In the end, that will impact how the characters relate to each other and how their relationship will be in the future.

  • The Walking Dead: Season Two (2013-2014) – the second season is the continuation of the story. We are still with Clementine, trying to navigate this harsh reality, zombies, and other survivors.

  • The Walking Dead: A New Frontier (Season Three) (2016-2017) – here, we have a “kind-of-sort-of” filler season, where we turn to Javi Garcia and explore his story. Same as with the previous situation, he tries to navigate this world as well as he can. Fans have mixed feelings about this one.

  • The Walking Dead: The Final Season (2018-2019) – and finally, we have the four seasons of this single-player adventure; Clementine’s story gets resolved while she is also taking care of a young boy called AJ, similar to what she experienced at the beginning of this.

Regarding the art style, storytelling, and creating a world entirely of threats, this game does not have many competitors. It’s also pretty easy to understand, as you mostly just make choices for what will happen next.

Among Us

  • Release Date: June 2018

  • Developer: InnerSloth LLC, PlayEveryWare

  • Platform(s): PC, Switch, Android, iOS

  • Meta Score: 85

Next, we have something that we would call an internet sensation – Among Us. You can play it on the computer or mobile devices with your family or friends online. The rounds are pretty quick, and you can do it between other things, so it’s not that time-consuming.

Among Us is a challenging little game that brings out the best of us – lying to our friends and family. The basic concept is simple: you are on a ship with other Among Us-looking individuals. One of you is what they call an Imposter. A thing that is only looking like one of you, but ultimately – is an alien wanting to murder everyone. So, you do exactly what you would do in this scenario – try and convince the others that you are not the one and find out who is the odd one out.

The gameplay consists of doing some quick-time events like pressing the button fast enough or just doing some basic puzzles while the Impostor kills crew members one by one. Your task is to set a meeting every time something happens and eject the Impostor. If you find the right one, the game ends, and you win. If not, and you have removed one of your friends, the game continues until the Imposter gets ejected or one of you dies.

It’s a pretty easy-to-understand mechanic, so we are sure that most of you will be able to get it pretty quickly, even if you are not a gaming-savvy individual. Enjoy!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

  • Release Date: March 2020

  • Developer: Nintendo

  • Platform(s): Switch

  • Meta Score: 90

It's another game on our list and another internet sensation. This time, we’re discussing the famous Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Here, you get to play as a fun-loving animal on their journey to create the perfect environment for its habitat. It’s a gardening game with some decorating on the side. You have your home; you can plant crops and decorate everything. It’s a lot of fun! And – it’s extremely addictive. Especially considering the fact that there are dozens of fabrics you can unlock and get better and better tables, cups, and even floors!

This became a hit during the pandemic, as everyone was just chilling in their homes and having fun during the lockdowns. They planted crops and really enjoyed being one of those crazy little characters. It’s extremely easy to play around and have fun in this game, so all the beginners will feel at home. You have your tools; you can create your own alternative life where you don’t need to worry about anything, and you can focus on animals watching TV on your console. It’s a dream come true!

Additionally, for those of you who are all about the community, this game is best suited for people who like to talk to each other and find common interests. With this title, you can give each other gifts, visit your friends to see what they are having, and ask if their drapes will look good in your living room.

LEGO: Star Wars – The Complete Saga

  • Release Date: November 2007

  • Developer: Traveller’s Tales

  • Platform(s): PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Wii, iOS, Android

  • Meta Score: 80

Our next pick is LEGO: Star Wars – The Complete Saga, and let us tell you – what a package it is! It covers the Skywalker saga with all of its ups and downs, skills you can master, and fascinating moments from the series. Of course, it’s not the 1:1 representation, as you are actually dealing with LEGO blocks, but it is as close as it gets when it comes to good parody.

The game is hilarious, and definitely, if you have a bigger family, you should play it with them. In this installment, you have all the first six movies to go through, with dozens of characters from all of those. And the best thing about it is that you go through each level extremely quickly with no issues whatsoever.

The gameplay consists mostly of pretty easy-to-navigate platforming elements with some fighting where you have to jump and use your lightsaber in order to get to the higher grounds. Additionally, after you unlock certain characters, you will get to play as them, so you can become Mace Windu, Yoda, and many others!

It may not be a perfect game, but it’s definitely something to look forward to, especially on consoles.

Overcooked

  • Release Date: August 2016

  • Developer: Ghost Town Games

  • Platform(s): PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Google Stadia

  • Meta Score: 81

Overcooked, on the other hand, is something completely different from all the other titles on our list. Writing about it is giving us chills. The music, the vibe, it’s unlike anything you would expect. You may feel like it’s a horror movie, but it’s something much more sinister. It’s a game where you have to work with your friends or family members, and there’s a time limit. There could be nothing that would prepare you for it.

So, how does it work? Well, on the surface, it’s a pretty basic game. You get a recipe, chop, boil, fry, etc., combine the ingredients, and create a dish. Seems pretty simple, right? Well, wrong! Although the gameplay is simple enough to play, trying to coordinate it all while also not getting everything on fire and keeping it under the time limit – feels like an impossible task.

Especially if you play with friends or family – then the competition begins. The screams – WHY DIDN’T YOU CHOP THE TOMATOES – or – WHERE IS THE SALAD – will haunt you many days after leaving the game. Of course, it does not mean that this is some kind of extremely hard title to play; it just creates lots of emotions for all parties involved. In our opinion, it’s always good fun, so we can’t really understand why no one wants to play with us anymore when we were only ASKING FOR CHICKEN TO GET COOKED! IS THAT TOO MUCH?! (kind of, sort of, get it).
