Let’s dive into ghost exorcism and the best games like Phasmophobia!

Have You Tried Phasmophobia?

But maybe, just maybe – you have never tried Phasmophobia? Well, in that case, it’s always good to try one of the internet sensations! Phasmophobia is a horror game with a psychological torture element, where you take on the role of a paranormal investigator exploring multiple haunted locations. It’s a survival game for those wanting to feel the horror of ghost investigations.

What makes this game is the atmosphere and the possibility of playing with friends. You have a lot of incredible tools you can utilize to find out where the ghosts are, with EMF readers for paranormal activity, cameras to document what you’ve seen (as probably – no one will believe you), and spirit boxes to keep your Ghost Exorcism Inc. up and running.

It was first published in 2020 as early access and became increasingly popular as the new patches rolled out. You can have fun with up to four players, which makes this title stand out in the competition.

But, as usual, it’s not the end-all-be-all kind of scenario, so let’s find out other games where you can go for some ghost-hunting. Let’s dive in!

Devour

  • Release date: January 2021

  • Developer: SitBack Games

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: N/A

Devour is something really in line with our title game. It’s also a multiplayer game, where you have a team of paranormal investigators on a mission to stop, this time not ghostly, but demonic Anna.

Gameplay is about the puzzle-solving/maze-navigation cooperative effort to find and restrain the demon. With every step you take, the demon gets increasingly aggressive, so keep that in mind. When it comes to similar games to Phasmophobia, you can’t get much further than that.

The key to winning in this game is to utilize the gameplay mechanics to coordinate actions in order not only to survive but to defeat the vile monster. You can do it online or offline in the local co-op mode.

When it comes to atmosphere, Devour is on top of our list. Suspense, jump scares, and some crazy visuals and audio create an atmosphere where you never know what will happen next, and you’re pretty scared about every corner you take. So, if you want to skip from ghosts in Phasmohobia to something more demonic, Devour is a game for you!

Midnight Ghost Hunt

  • Release date: March 2022

  • Developer: Vaulted Sky Games

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: N/A

Midnight Ghost Hunt is another paranormal investigation kind of game. But – here’s a twist. You not only fight against the ghosts, you can become one of them! Midnight Ghost Hunt is centered around the 4v4 fights between spirits that can possess and hide within different objects and ambush the always-alert Ghost Hunters. Bring up to three friends and fight against the undead or become one of them!

When the clock strikes midnight – it’s time to fight! Both teams need to find different ways of outsmarting the other one. Ghosts must act stealthy until they come out with the craziest attack imaginable. On the other hand, Ghost Hunters need to be stealthy and alert to see if any objects that should not be animated are acting funnily. A landscape is destructible, so it adds another layer of dynamism and strategizing.

Unlike Phasmophobia, in this game, it’s all about competition. You play hide and seek while also having a Ghosts vs. People clash. Developers ensured that the ghost’s skills and their counterparts' abilities were balanced enough so that they could fairly fight against each other. It’s not the scariest of horrors on our list, but it’s a lot of fun!

The Blackout Club

  • Release date: October 2018

  • Developer: Question, Question LLC

  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One

  • Meta Score: N/A

The Blackout Club is your Stranger Things of horror games. You have the school and teens; the action takes place in various crazy areas you may connect to the Netflix series and overall – afterlife-bred monsters who haunt this world.

Kids create The Blackout Club to fight against the secret society causing title blackouts all over town, while people wake up from them without remembering what they’ve done.

In essence, it’s an adventure game, similar to the Netflix series, where the “band” collects evidence, tries to find their missing friends, and fights against the evil that came over their local society.

In this game, it’s all about teamwork. You need to work together to combat the evil that came over the town. So, exchange the information you have gathered, solve puzzles and do whatever it takes to eliminate your secret neighbor. What also makes this game interesting is the procedurally generated levels, so there are no two same runs.

So, if you always wanted to take control of Mike, Lucas, or Eleve, it’s as close as it gets (never mind the awful Stranger Things game).

We Were Here Forever

  • Release date: May 2022

  • Developer: Total Mayhem Games

  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

  • Meta Score: 81

We Were Here Forever is the fourth installment of the popular We Were Here series. It revolves around the idea of two players working together to finish a series of puzzles to find a way out of the dire situation. They communicate through a walkie-talkie and usually cannot interact with each other in any other way.

The fourth game focuses on the Antarctic castle, where you need to find a way out armed only with a communication device. A series of puzzles awaits you to escape and return to your families. The key is communication and collaboration. You literally cannot do anything without each other. You need to have your counterpart's perspective on the other side to get some crucial information and perspective on your situation.

Regarding cooperation, you must understand what the other person is trying to convey and vice versa. Additionally, there’s an exciting plot surrounding the castle, so finding out what is going on there is an additional plus. Be sure to check it out. We Were Here Forever and other games from the series.

Pacify

  • Release date: February 2019

  • Developer: SKH Apps, SKH Apps, LLC

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Mac operating systems, Classic Mac OS

  • Meta Score: N/A

Next up, we have – Pacify! A co-op multiplayer horror game that is all about “pacifying” some demons/ghosts/whatever you would like to call them. In this title, you are one of the paranormal investigators trying to create a “ghost exile” of sorts. The longer you are in the house, the scarier it gets, so be sure you can take care of those ghosts fast.

And – take control of it first! It’s not like you are the only paranormal investigator in this house, as you must compete with other players. It’s the great strength of this game, as you can not only fight against the ghosts and make life harder for other players through tricks to slow them down.

You can even take the role of the spirit that is haunting this house in the PvP kind of scenario, where you can have a unique experience of chasing the chasers, as they say.

Finding clues and uncovering new areas in the house are well thought out, and it demands players to work together to get ahead of the ghost at hand. With a unique sound design and some pretty terrifying jump scares – it’s a very atmospheric and suspenseful play that everyone who loves Phasmophobia will enjoy. And – those supernatural entities are exceptionally designed, so prepare yourself for some scares.

GTFO

  • Release date: December 2021

  • Developer: 10 Chambers

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: 78

GTFO is something completely different! Unlike the other games on our list, it’s a fast-paced first-person shooter with intense team-based gameplay and an atmospheric setting. In this title, you are one of the prisoners in the underground prison complex where the unknown entity, “The Warden,” demands you to do some dangerous mission to fight for your freedom.

The key to this game is working together with your teammates. Before every mission, you are set to choose your gear. Be sure that it all supplements each other regarding firepower, utility, and healing, as it will be pretty helpful while going through the hordes of enemies.

The most praised element of this game, and it received positive reviews on many platforms, is the atmosphere of uneasiness that it creates. The danger can be found literally around every corner, whether you are playing solo or with friends. So, you need to always be on high alert, as going through those dimly lit environments with some eerie sound design can sometimes be highly spooky.

Additionally – be sure to stay alive! Although it’s not like it’s game over when you pass out, there are consequences for the drop and the experience you will gain in the future, so step carefully. Overall – it’s a great game to play with friends but also can be a fun experience in solo mode or with random people on the internet. If you like those fast-paced titles – you will be thrilled!

Propnight

  • Release date: December 2021

  • Developer: Fntastic

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: N/A

Propnight is another horrifying game on our list, in the worst meaning possible. It is based on everyone’s fear of inanimated objects – puppets. So, if you are looking for something like Phasmophobia but with a twist of being even more creepy – propnight is something for you. You can play it with up to four players against one Killer who is charged with, well, murdering everyone else.

It’s the best of the horror genre – solve puzzles and try to get out of the map alive. Seems easy? Well, it’s not. One player takes control of the Killer, trying to murder all the survivors. The game also ends when the time runs out, so if the players are weak enough, he could just sit around and wait for them to fail.

You can play as a survivor trying to stay alive and repair Propmachines all over the map while the murderous killer tries to take your life. Additionally, as a survivor, you can transform into different props, so if you want to hide, you can certainly do so.

The game is fun, and for the horror genre, it’s pretty light-hearted. It is still frightening, but everyone can enjoy some elements of small-town quirkiness. Worth checking out.

Friday the 13th

  • Release date: May 2017

  • Developer: IllFonic, Black Tower Studios

  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

  • Meta Score: 69

Friday the 13th is another scary title on our list, this time – it’s based on the fantastic Friday the 13th franchise. Similarly to what we have seen before, you can either be Jason Voorhees, a ruthless killer of teenagers, or one of the counselors at the park. One of the players is essentially trying to murder all of the counselors one by one. The game's primary goal is to either run away, hide, or even, in some cases, fight against the villain.

The game’s central concept is to combine the puzzle-solving for different escape plans, like repairing vehicles or calling for help with Jason’s pursuit. Every counselor has a different set of abilities that can help in the course of action, but they also have weaknesses that you need to consider when designing your next move.

Another significant asset of this game is that it’s based in the Friday the 13th world, so expect to see a lot of familiar elements like Camp Crystal Lake, for example. And – every map has a different set of escape routes, so be sure to check them out as you go.

BIGFOOT

  • Release date: January 2017

  • Developer: CyberLightGameStudios

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: N/A

BIGFOOT is something completely different, on the other hand. Here, you take control of a group of hunters or researchers trying to find the title BIGFOOT, a monster that is roaming this wonderful land. Explore, gather resources, and set traps to find out the exact location of the monster to capture the giant once and for all!

The game's big focus is not only on finding the monster but also – on doing it first. You need to strategize to do it before anyone else can accomplish that task. And – it’s not going to be easy. There will be a lot of trouble on your way to success, as it can be pretty challenging to find BIGFOOT due to the well-programmed AI intelligence of the giant. So, plan carefully and, more importantly – survive!

How to do it? Well, there are multiple weapons and pieces of equipment that you can utilize for this task, depending if you join the researchers or hunters, for that matter. The most important thing is to create a successful strategy that will help you keep yourself safe while catching the BIGFOOT simultaneously! Is it a worthwhile title? Well, it has a similar gameplay to the next game on our list, with the added giant monkey, so it’s a win in our book.

Hunt: Showdown

  • Release date: August 2010

  • Developer: Crytek

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5

  • Meta Score: 81

And finally, we have the Hunt: Showdown game, an extremely popular PvPvE kind of game, where you hunt not only the evil monsters who are roaming the swaps but also – other players as well. It’s a dark game with a great story based in the 19th century and an atmospheric setting of swamp-based forests.

It all revolves around getting a bounty from one of the evil monsters while also trying not to get killed by the opposite party and other hunters as well. It looks stunning, like most Crytec games, but what really makes the difference is the sound design. It’s incredible! With good headphones, you can hear every single detail, every crack of a stick in the muddy forest, every cough and breath. It creates a rather uneasy atmosphere where everything seems to be against you.

Apply a strategic approach when determining your actions, as there are many different classes and traits for each hunter. You can either go for the most traps-based combo or focus on the assault elements. You are responsible for your build in the end, so be sure to make the most out of it.
