Need for Speed is a long-living, awesome game series about customizing and driving the car of your dreams. Sometimes in an arcade environment, sometimes in simulation. 

There were times when the NFS theme was legal racing, but at its root, its main draw was almost always illicit racing, with police pursuits and breaking the speed limit. With that in mind, these will be our outlines for the list:

• Intense driving in various cars.
• Arcade-y feeling to it.
• Good and varied customization options.
• Illegal racing and police chases are a big plus, like Need for Speed Hot Pursuit.

Let’s get down to it. Listed in no particular order because why should it be?

Sadly, the Midnight Club series didn’t make it to the list because, as of writing, acquiring its titles is problematic at best.

The Crew 2

Welcome to the world of preposterous America. Here you get to drive cars, boats, airplanes, and any of the 400 vehicles. 

What to do with all of that? Have some stupid fun, through silly events, of course!

Fly through Manhattan’s sprawling metropolis, do a backflip from Mount Rushmore with a motorbike, or use Hoover Dam as a ramp for your boat!

With day/night cycle and dynamic weather, you could set out for an ultimate driver journey – from Florida’s swamps to Area 51, ice-covered mountains, to San Francisco’s famous bridge! 

You Got Options

It’s an open-world game with so many vehicles that I haven’t seen even half of them. Seriously, not many racing games offer such sheer variety. You can personalize hundreds, literally hundreds of machines. The best part is that once you choose your setup, you can switch cars into planes on the fly. 

While the steering seems simple, it’s more than made up with sheer choice. Customization? It got that, even allowing you to adjust interiors to your liking, which is amazing with cockpit view. Not to mention all the outside parts.

Yup, Still Updated

Even though The Crew 2 was released in 2018, it still gets updated regularly, with new machines and events through which you can unlock those. Those range from action movie recreation, with police cars and pursuits, to popping a most epic of drift wheelies on an airport runway.

Burnout Paradise

Remember that first outline about high-octane driving? Yes. Just yes. 

Do you want to race? In Burnout Paradise, you just stop at any crossing and start to burn rubber. You get opponents, a finish line, and complete freedom in how you get there.

Had enough of races? Stop, and the game will realize that you’re no longer going at meteoric speeds and quit the race for you. After that, you can further explore the map.

FUN Driving Action

This is the title where you turn your brain off, press pedal to the metal, and drive through the open world like a maniac. This is the game where wrecking everything and everyone, even yourself, but especially other players, is FUN. This title rewards your reckless, over-the-top driving at the speed limit of your car, with even more speed. 

How? Because close calls, ramming into things, and jumping off of every ramp possible is how you get afterburner to propel you into insanity and beyond.

So go ahead! Dominate the competition and win. There’s no penalty for hitting others. It’s even encouraged, with slow motion of your enemies getting smashed into walls as your booster bar fills up.

You Will Create Traffic Accidents

Game modes? One of them gives you the goal of creating the most costly traffic cataclysm ever, while others allow you to have some cop and wanted racer action, stunts, or cruising on motorcycles.

And somehow, it all feels organic. The more you play Burnout Paradise, the more you let your impulses guide you through Paradise City. Here’s another ramp to jump. Here’s another shortcut. Oh, I bet I could smash through here on the next race. 

And all of it to the best-worst music that many would declare cringe-worthy. And yet it fits like a glove to the mayhem you can visit upon those poor streets.

GTA Online Races

GTA Online, or GTA V’s online multiplayer mode, depending on your version, has some of the most sophisticated online racing I’ve seen in a long time. 

When I saw the players’ night “stroll” through the Los Santos, my first thought was, “Wait, this looks exactly like the Need for Speed series!”.

Game Modes Limited Only by Imagination

And it’s only one type of driving competition in GTA Online. You have more games and modes than should be allowed. There are run-of-the-mill standard lap and From-A-To-B races, obviously. 

You can also sign up for some more wild and creative modes. Transform races change your car into a plane, boat, or something else once you pass through a checkpoint. Stunt tracks are entirely another beast, with gravity-defying driving through loops, tunnels, and wild turns. 

There’s also an amusing type of car racing, where you get a friend riding literal shotgun and shooting at other racers. And all that is omitting the wild creations of fans and modders.

Hundreds of Options to Personalize Your Stuff

Customization? Ho boi, is it there. You have cars ranging from… everything, to be honest? And all the money that you earn through various activities in Grand Theft Auto Online can be burned on bumpers, paint, wheels, rims, engines, and all that funky jazz. 

If you’re a fan of hidden mechanics, there’s also that. Regular slipstreaming, there’s curb boosting, there’s a catch-up system, and a few more.

Project Cars 2

And now for something different, where we shift the gear a little. Project Cars 2 had a bumpy start, yes. And yet, after a few years of patches and content additions, it became a real treat for racing enthusiasts. 

Here we have hardcore simulation, where everything matters – from the wear and tear on your tires, through weather, to every singular part that makes up your car. 

It’s a game that basically demands a wheel controller to fully enjoy, for the simplest reason. It’s such a neat and tight recreation of cars and physics that your real driving skills translate flawlessly into it.

Great sim not enough for you, you greedy racer? Then how about diverse and expansive tracks and vehicles to choose from?

This Game Has Wheels for Days

Think of a racing type of car, and it’ll probably be there. Think of a real-world track, and it’ll probably be there. You get Formula 1. You get off-roaders, rally cars, and even freaking go-karts. And from what I’ve experienced, most of those are supported in story mode!

Forza Horizon 5

Many of you might know the Forza series. Most of the titles are about that serious business of professional racing and recreating all the minute details of physics to a downright granular level. Most. 

Forza Horizon series is less about the hardcore sim and more about crazy, arcade-y stuff. It’s all about the wacky Horizon festival “hosted” less than legally in a different location from title to title, and now? It’s time for MEXICO!

Landscape is Beautiful

And what a time it is… In this massive open-world fiesta, Mexico is recreated in absolutely gorgeous detail. And the developers didn’t forget how varied this country is. One moment, you might be striding through sandy dunes, only to enter one of the colorful cities full of winding roads. If that’s not your climate, you can travel to lush jungles with ancient ruins, or even race around volcanoes. Active volcanoes. Talk about scenic! 

While having great scenery to dash through is a thrill, Forza Horizon also creates a great balance in other parts. You get all the mechanical customization you could ever want. Tires for better traction, engine parts, brakes, exhausts, suspension… And all of that enriches the arcade gameplay with unprecedented realism.

It’s All About Your Driving Experience

At the same time, you feel that everything is just to add to the FUN factor. I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s just a pure joy to cruise through the Mexican landscape. 

Maybe it’s because of evenly spread stuff to do. You always have something, and you’re always rewarded for doing things, like exploring and driving recklessly, yet without being overwhelmed by it. Maybe because each of over 500 vehicles feels different. 

Or maybe because of all the multiplayer world events that pop around?

Dirt: Rally 2.0

Ah, the series that was created thanks to the advice and insight of a racing legend and one of the rally icons, Collin McRae. At first glance, it looks like a simple racing title. Go through some country roads made from dirt and have the best time. Truth be told… it’s a bit more than that. 

Look at Those Trees. Look at Them

That goes without saying, the environments and cars are marvelous. At this point, it’s a given that racing games look splendid, but we shouldn’t be desensitized to a work of art. Barreling through sun-lit autumn forest, fighting against the car to keep it on snow-covered tracks, or just speeding across a well-mapped city. It’s a thing of beauty.

It’s not exactly one of the games like Need for Speed, but it’s a racing game of magnificent quality.

The only complaint I could have is that only one multiplayer mode allows you to see and bump the other car when racing against players online and AI alike. Otherwise, it’s just ghost mode.

Wreckfest

As the spiritual successor of the FlatOut series, Wreckfest has a legacy. A legacy of twisted metal and rust buckets held together by amateur welding, faith, and grit. A legacy of car-crashing, driver-catapulting, reckless racing. And this game upholds this legacy proudly, with its own spin. 

The Insanity Is Not Limited to Destruction

Wreckfest features some hysterical options for what you crash. You got classic cars, regular totally-not-Volksvagen unlicensed cars, SCHOOL BUSES, double-decker cars, RVs, HARVESTERS, motorized couches, and more!

Gran Turismo Series

Hardcore simulation with diverse and expansive license list for world’s greatest cars. 

Gran Turismo has always stylized itself as the racing game for simulating the career of a sports driver, where you slowly but surely build up your name and your fleet of vehicles. 

Although… what is a great vehicle without some great circuits? No worries here. The latest in the series got 34 different racetracks and 90 routes to play around with.

Fun fact: there’s a GT racing academy, that takes the best players and puts them into real cars. How’s that for authentic racing?

Trackmania

Arcade challenge racing! 

Not much more to say about it, but not much is needed. Trackmania series is created for challenging and complex arenas to go through in single-player and multiplayer, and for you to create… whatever kind of racing circuit you’d like because each title has an amazing editor.
