The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

  • Release Date: 2015
  • Developer: CD PROJEKT RED
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, XONE
  • Meta Score: 93

There could not have been a better number one on our list than The Witcher III. It is one of the best games ever where you can create your own adventure in a fantasy setting of a unique world.

Let’s start with what this game does right. The combat is incredible. It may feel like a Dark Souls series clone, an “attack and roll” kind of thing, but it is much more complicated than that. In this medieval world, full of fantastical creatures, there are no two similar monsters to slay. Use your silver sword for the monster and steel one for, well, also the monster but in human form.

In addition to great combat, the story is just out of this world. Literally! Andrzej Sapkowski’s unforgiving world is brutal and sad but also – full of potential! You can hunt monsters as a witcher usually does, do side quests, and find the secret of the Wild Hunt in the end.

It may not be as similar to Monster Hunter: Rise as you think, though, as those monsters are usually connected to some pretty horrific story.

In all cases, though, The Witcher III is one of the best RPG games, not only similar to Dragon’s Dogma but RPG games, period! If you want to find a worthy successor to your favorite title, this one should be on your list!

Kenshi

  • Release Date: December 2018

Kenshi is a dark and twisted open-world RPG with a world filled with mysteries. And – it’s so immersive that you just can’t ignore it. In this game, you become Kenshi, a lone samurai going through a post-apocalyptic world trying to fit into the bigger picture. You complete quests or…don’t. In this game, you can just roam around aimlessly to find the true meaning of your life.

The most important thing about Kenshi is that it does not make you do anything. Its non-linear storytelling gets you a feel that you are, indeed, a person who can make their own decisions, and those decisions impact the world around you. If you want to find an even more depressing version of Dragon’s Dogma, Kenshi is your weapon of choice!

Dark Souls: Remastered

  • Release Date: 2018
  • Developer: QLOC
  • Platforms: PS4, PC, XONE, Nintendo Switch
  • Meta Score: 84

Also known as Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls changed the gaming landscape forever when it first came out. It was grand; it was popular, and – it was so hard! Game difficulty was something that defined this game for many players. For most RPG enthusiasts, it was also an entirely new world to explore that had never been seen before. And, to be frank, there are a lot of Dark Souls in Dragons Dogma.

You travel through the not-so-wonderful world of Lordran as an undead in order to discover the fate of your kind. While doing so, you will have to face lots of monsters, that you will slay with a good amount of rolling and stabbing with various weapons.

How does it play out with the remastered version? Unsurprisingly – awesome. 60fps and new graphics look fantastic, and the gameplay is still up there with the best ones. If you have never played this game before on the original release, you will surely be happy to check it out now. Worth checking out!

Although it’s not the latest installment, it’s a great game with many action-RPG elements that will feel similar to Dragon’s Dogma fans.

The best thing about Monster Hunter: World is that you essentially hunt monsters all the time. You track them, find out more about them, see their weaknesses, and then strike at the least expected moment.

Choose one of the ridiculous and over-the-top weapons from the vast arsenal. Although new players may have to invest some time into understanding how to play this game, the result will surely give back. As the game progresses and you get more acquainted, there is no going back!

A wonderful world with outstanding gameplay, and you also get to meet Sauron. Well, count us in! Tolkien-based games have been a hit-or-miss sometimes, but it is not the case with Middle-Earth: Shadow of War.

It’s big, vast, and full of amazing sights, straight from our favorite fantasy writer, so it delivers on many fronts! With an introduction of a new and upgraded nemesis system, this RPG just got a whole level better than its predecessor. The combat system is similar to Arkham games, so if you like those, you will enjoy fighting in this one as well. With RPG elements and open-world Tolkien lore – it’s a treat for sure!

Assassins Creed: Odyssey

  • Release Date: 2018
  • Developer: Ubisoft Quebec
  • Platforms: PC, Stadia, XONE, Playstation 4
  • Meta Score: 83

Have you ever wanted to be like Russell Crowe’s gladiator and fight mighty warriors in the ancient world? Well, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the closest thing you can get. This time, we visited Greece during the Peloponnesian Wars.

And it’s still full of jumping, climbing up the walls, and secretive murdering of some pretty high-up people. You are a Spartan trying to save your own home. Will you manage to do that? Or will you perish like many in those ancient times?

But why is it so wonderful? Well, it’s one of the most fun action games with RPG elements ever created. Great open-world map, with lots and lots of weapons to choose from and numerous skills to master – it’s just a well-rounded game for a well-rounded person.

Additionally, the plot is improving in those games, so you will have something to think about while assassinating. And isn’t it what it’s all about?

Mass Effect: Andromeda

  • Release Date: 2017
  • Developer: BioWare
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, XONE, PC
  • Meta Score: 72

The Mass Effect trilogy was, pun intended, massive! It took the gaming world by storm, spurring multiple copies worldwide. Some are better than others, of course. Nevertheless, you cannot underestimate this series's influence on the gaming world.

So, when it was revealed that a fourth one was coming, everyone’s hearts stopped. And then…they started complaining. And to be frank, this game is different from the original trilogy. And it does not mean that it’s terrible. It’s just something else. Many critics pointed out to Andromeda being a missed opportunity to be one of the greats while also praising upgraded combat elements.

It seems like people’s expectations were even more significant than what was possible to accomplish. And looking back and Mass Effect: Andromeda, it’s a pretty decent action RPG set in space. There are multiple skills to develop, the amount of weapons and accessories is astonishing, and there is no reason why you would not give this one a chance, especially if you were a fan of the original Mass Effect games.

The most significant difference between this and the previous games is the lack of pause time during combat and the ability to choose your skills freely rather than picking a class at the start. Overall – it still slaps!

Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition

  • Release date: 2020
  • Developer: Capcom
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
  • Meta Score: 89

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition is the upgraded version of a classic vampire/demon-hunting tale of our times. It’s fast, engaging, and it makes even the devil cry! Metaphorically, of course.

With an upgraded version for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, you will quickly notice that a lot has changed, graphics-wise.

We are not saying that this is an entirely different game, but it certainly looks better than the previous

The combat system slaps, and the fast-paced action gameplay is still stunning. If you like Dragon’s Dogma, you will quickly notice the similarities between these two games. And, if you are tired of killing dragons, why not check out the demons? It may be even more fun to destroy those hellish creatures with a snarky comment on top of it all.

Tales of Arise

  • Release Date: 2021
  • Developer: Bandai Namco
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XONE, Xbox Series X/S
  • Metascore: 87

And here we have another jRPG on our list, this time from our lovely friends at Bandai Namco. As usual in those cases, the player character has much to go through, and not everything can be accomplished using Talk-No-Jutsu.

Tales of Arise presents a fantastic world with hordes of enemies that you can fight using different skills for each of them. The greatest addition to this one is your team members’ abilities, with the "Boost Strike" feature that allows many party members to attack together. The Linear Motion Battle System makes a comeback, and you can do even more actions during your turn than in previous games.

But a compelling story is not all that makes this game incredible. It also has fantastic visuals. Tales of Arise looks and feels like an anime. Everywhere you look and go, there are hundreds upon hundreds of little details, each more interesting than the previous one. If you are a fan of great gameplay Japanese style – Tales of Arise is up there with the best.

Gothic

  • Release Date: 2006
  • Developer: Piranha – Bytes
  • Platforms: PC
  • Meta Score: 81

Gothic is a classic, no questions asked. The Gothic series is probably one of the best-known in the history of RPGs. Well, at least in Germany and Poland. The nameless protagonist, the glitches, the incredible development system and just overall – a great story; you just can’t go wrong with a little bit of Gothic in your life.

If you’re a fan of RPGs, you need at least to play a little bit of Gothic or Gothic II. You gather resources that you can then use to create armor or weapons. It is rather hard to do so, and the gathering aspect is pretty important in developing your character. You also gain skill points during the game that guarantees you boosts to fighting with one-handed weapons or acrobatics. If you played Skyrim, you will feel like at home.

With a remastered version right around the corner, you can’t go wrong with a little bit of nostalgia.

The Technomancer

  • Release Date: 2016
  • Developer: Spiders
  • Platforms: PC, XONE, Playstation 4
  • Meta Score: 68

And finally – the Technomancer. We went far into the past; let’s get into the future. This game is set on Mars, 200 years after we’ve managed to colonize it as a specie. And, as we usually do, we started fighting each other to gain the most precious of resources – water.

You are Zachariah, a Technomancer on their way to the city of Noctis to contact the Earth. You have one opportunity to do a good thing. Will you capture it? Or just let it slip?

There are plenty of things to do as a technomancer, and, like in every RPG – it usually means that you will have to fight a little. Technomancy is a superpower based on electricity. You can use it freely to fight with enemies and destroy your adversaries!

If you’re a fan of action RPGs, this one will go over well with you. It has everything you need to make a good run for your money. You have a perfect addictive system that makes you crave more and more power as you play, a pretty good story, and great visuals. What more can you ask for in an RPG? Is it a perfect game? Hell no. But it’s good enough for you to check out.

Games Like Dragon’s Dogma – Conclusion

Of course, it’s not everything. You can easily take something from Dragon Age or Fable series, and it will be an even more complete list, but we’ve decided to put our eggs in a particular basket.

We feel like those would be the games that Dragon’s Dogma enthusiasts would go for when looking for something new and incredible to put their sword and shield into. There are plenty of RPGs on the market, but you rarely get something that sticks with you for longer than the time of playing. It may sound obvious, but this “extra” element is lacking in many modern RPG games.

So, if you cherish exploration and great battles, you will find something for yourself on our list. If you want a personal story and to be a hero – there is something for you too. We tried to create a perfect list for everyone, and we hope we succeeded.

Anyways, thank you so much for checking out our efforts. If you liked this one, we have a lot more where it came from, so be sure to check it out. We’ll see you at the next one!
