To the Moon is one of those few games you instantly fall in love with. It’s a cheerful and emotional story set in a marvelous world with dozens of lovely characters and party members you meet over time.

Even though To the Moon does not have impressive visuals, its incredible writing, and thrilling story are enough to touch your heart.

The game’s graphic novel story is more a tale than a video game, but it does not mean that it doesn’t have interesting mechanics and development. To the Moon is mainly focused on dialogues (like the best RPGs or graphic novels), where the discovery of the past of characters is the heart and core that joint gameplay and plot.

But that is not all! To the Moon also features an impressive visual style that reminds me of jewels of the genre, like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger for Super Nintendo. I must also say that the use of RPG Maker XP by the developers is outstanding! To the Moon looks very good, with impressive lighting work that contributes to the general sense of sadness that rules the game.

Like the other games in this list, To the Moon is a heartfelt game that makes you feel you’re a different persona when ending it. You’ll feel similar vibes when playing Undertale, and that’s a reason enough to try this game.

Stardew Valley and Undertale do not only share a simple graphic style based on pixel art but also an impressive caring for characters and their dreams and fears. All this added to a notorious attention to surroundings regardless of their simplicity and basic shapes. 

Each element in Stardew Valley is meticulously planned and designed, from common houses you can find in the town to each piece of furniture or object you can create through the crafting system.

Even though Stardew Valley has a more relaxing playthrough than Undertale – and it does not look like you’re in hell – this life simulator involves fighting from time to time, which adds to the game a new layout that enriches the gameplay.

But beyond this, both games have great storytelling through which a hero must discover their path and what destiny holds for them.

Yomawari: Night Alone is the only game in this list that shares horror with Undertale. Yeah, although the Toby Fox creation looks like a chill game, many of its scenarios are extracted from a weird world, leading to fear and a sense of anxiety. Something similar happens with Yomawari: Night Alone.

Both titles consist in the exploration of a strange setting – an underground world in the case of the first and a night town in the case of the second. Still, Yomawari: Night Alone is a game more focused on interacting with the surroundings than the Toby Fox title. Stones, the shovel, and money are significant tools you can use for several purposes, and they add several layers of gameplay.

Yomawari: Night Alone is a great experience for players like me, looking for completely free exploration and psychological horror where comedy and violence can coexist. I played this game for hours, and I can’t do anything else than recommend it.
