8 Unforgettable Games Like Undertale to Play Today!

Indie games are probably at their best now. The ease of usage of the new programs, like GamerMaker Studio or RPG Maker, or the pre-code programming system of software like Real Engine, has boosted the incursion of new participants in the industry. This is the case of Toby Fox, a composer and game developer who, in 2015, broke the video game world with the release of Undertale, a magical story of hope, love, solitude, relationships, and fear.

Still, Undertale has taken many elements of past games and has been the influence of many further games that came through the years. In the subsequent section, we will discuss some of these Games Like Undertale, titles that mostly take place in a fantasy world where bizarre creatures abound and memorable characters come to life.

What Is Undertale?

  • Release Date: September 15, 2015

  • Developer: Toby Fox

  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, OS X, Linux, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

  • Publisher: Fan Gamer | 8-4

  • Metascore: 92

Undertale is likely one of the most claimed indie games of recent years, together with other titles like Hollow Knight, Sea of Stars, and Terraria. However, Undertale is a bit different from all points of view.

In the first place, Undertale is the port of arrival of many RPGs from the past, which contributed a lot to the genre. A good example of this is Earthbound and its world-building. But still, Undertale goes beyond, posing a deep and immersive story in a dark world inhabited by strange creatures and quirky characters. Each character you encounter has a plot, storyline, and motivations. In this regard, the game exudes a vibrant sense of life, not to mention its charming visual style crafted in pixel art.

Regarding its story, Undertale follows the adventure of a child trapped in an underground world full of monsters that have been separated from the surface. Your adventure for returning to your world will take you to impressive and adorable scenarios with multiple secrets and surprises.

Undertale fans will love the titles described in the following sections. Like Undertale, they share turn-based combat, a cute main character, many puzzles, and much more.

Key Features:

  • A versatile style of combat. You can choose between killing or making friends.

  • A soulful story full of characters and plenty of humor.

  • Multiple endings depending on your actions.

Undertale Steam CD Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.

What Are the Best Games Like Undertale?

Selecting the best games like Undertale is a hard task since the game that concerns us is a masterpiece by its credits. Still, some games are at its level.

Oxenfree

  • Release Date: January 15, 2016

  • Developer: Night School Studio

  • Publisher: Night School Studio

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, OS X, Xbox One, Linux, iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch

  • Metascore: 80

The first game in this list is a game that stands out due to its writing, acting, and pacing. Like Undertale, Oxefree is a graphic adventure with RPG elements focused especially on visual details and how these express what is happening on the screen. In this way, Oxenfree provides a distinctive visual experience resembling a watercolor painting, where actions unfold. The game also offers a conversation system through which characters come to life by talking to each other while walking across scenarios.

However, Oxenfree doesn’t offer a real challenge, and it’s not particularly long, but it makes up for this with its deep character and multiple dialogue options. This way, the game can lead you to different paths to unravel unique aspects of the plot.

All the choices you make in Oxenfree have a particular effect on the relationship between you and other characters. Decision-making is one of the aspects I love most about Oxenfree since it turns the gameplay into a free promenade where wandering and dialoguing flow marvelously.

If you’re waiting for your next game like Undertale, Oxenfree will provide you with a nice and chill experience.

Key Features:

  • A conversation system that changes the story and the relationships with characters.

  • Special radio mechanics allow you to communicate with specters and manipulate their world.

  • Multiple mysteries to unravel that span many years.

Oxenfree Global Steam CD Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.

The Stanley Parable

  • Release Date: October 17, 2013

  • Developer: Galactic Cafe

  • Publisher: Galactic Cafe

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux

  • Metascore: 88

At first glance, Undertale and The Stanley Parable do not look very similar, which is true from the visual design and aesthetics. However, they share a similar story-based narration that influences the development of the characters.

Since the Stanley Parable is played from a first-person perspective, it offers a more immersive experience based on direct interactions. As Stanley – the silent protagonist – you must merge with the environment and the narrator, an off-voice that explains Stanley's feelings and what is happening.

Like many games of the same genre, decision-making is the main feature of the game since you’ll be confronted with multiple paths. The narrator will try to guide you at some point, but the decision is up to you and should be based on what you see and experience in the surroundings. The endings also will depend on your choices during gameplay.

I believe that The Stanley Parable is a masterpiece, but, of course, it’s not for everyone. Even though The Stanley is more of an interactive movie rather than a title with deep gaming features, it still presents an interesting concept that can keep you in front of the screen for hours.

In a few words, The Stanley Parable is a game for those who want to experience an encounter with themselves and interact with their thoughts.

Key Features:

  • A first-person exploration conducts you through different rooms of a corporation building.

  • Multiple decisions to make that will open thousands of doors.

  • A narrator with no clear intentions can lead you to contradictions.

The Stanley Parable Steam CD Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.

To the Moon

  • Release Date: November 1, 2011

  • Developer: Freebird Games

  • Publisher: Freebird Games

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch

  • Metascore: 81

To the Moon is one of those few games you instantly fall in love with. It’s a cheerful and emotional story set in a marvelous world with dozens of lovely characters and party members you meet over time.

Even though To the Moon does not have impressive visuals, its incredible writing, and thrilling story are enough to touch your heart.

The game’s graphic novel story is more a tale than a video game, but it does not mean that it doesn’t have interesting mechanics and development. To the Moon is mainly focused on dialogues (like the best RPGs or graphic novels), where the discovery of the past of characters is the heart and core that joint gameplay and plot.

But that is not all! To the Moon also features an impressive visual style that reminds me of jewels of the genre, like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger for Super Nintendo. I must also say that the use of RPG Maker XP by the developers is outstanding! To the Moon looks very good, with impressive lighting work that contributes to the general sense of sadness that rules the game.

Like the other games in this list, To the Moon is a heartfelt game that makes you feel you’re a different persona when ending it. You’ll feel similar vibes when playing Undertale, and that’s a reason enough to try this game.

Key Features:

  • A unique and painful story with no combat or enemies that will break your heart.

  • A good mix of classic RPG elements and innovative gameplay.

  • Well-achieved graphics with pixel-art style and an unforgettable soundtrack.

To the Moon Steam CD Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.

Finding Paradise

  • Release Date: December 14, 2017

  • Developer: Freebird Games

  • Publisher: Freebird Games

  • Platforms: macOS, Linux, Windows, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch

  • Metascore: 81

Finding Paradise is an action and role-playing game that serves as a sequel to To the Moon. Like its predecessor, Finding Paradise revolves around two characters helping to fulfill the wish of a breeding older man.

Playing Finding Paradise is a relaxing experience with just a few gameplay mechanics. In this sense, this chill but emotional adventure is built through gorgeous images, heartfelt dialogues, and an impressive soundtrack containing similar themes as To the Moon.

When playing Finding Paradise, you get the same experience and feeling as reading a good book or seeing a heart-beating film. Its care placed in each environment, scene, and relationship between characters makes this game an incredible and emotional experience you should explore from start to end.

Finding Paradise shares that sense of caring with Undertale. It sounds incredible that a single guy can develop and program an entire game of this nature. Moreover, both games stand out due to their touching narrative where battles go into the background. This way, you can be focused on what is happening with the characters.

Finding Paradise combines many features, like Mother, Pony Island, and Lisa the Painful, that can make you cry as well as have fun. It is a title that is worthy of playing from any point of view.

Key Features:

  • An emotional story delved into the memory of an older man desiring to fulfill his wish.

  • A game inspired by fate, love, fear, and hope leads you through beautiful scenarios.

  • Well-written dialogues, impressive music, and outstanding surroundings.

Finding Paradise Steam CD Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.

Stardew Valley

  • Release Date: February 26, 2016

  • Developer: ConcernedApe

  • Publisher: ConcernedApe

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation Vita, iOS, Android

  • Metascore: 89

Stardew Valley is built on a simple premise: do whatever you want but keep your farm in order. Since this title is a life sim with multiple role-playing elements, you can take your time and see how vegetables grow while trying to create and keep good relationships with the inhabitants of the nearby town.

Stardew Valley and Undertale do not only share a simple graphic style based on pixel art but also an impressive caring for characters and their dreams and fears. All this added to a notorious attention to surroundings regardless of their simplicity and basic shapes.

Each element in Stardew Valley is meticulously planned and designed, from common houses you can find in the town to each piece of furniture or object you can create through the crafting system.

Even though Stardew Valley has a more relaxing playthrough than Undertale – and it does not look like you’re in hell – this life simulator involves fighting from time to time, which adds to the game a new layout that enriches the gameplay.

But beyond this, both games have great storytelling through which a hero must discover their path and what destiny holds for them.

Key Features:

  • A completely different gameplay where you can do whatever you want.

  • A beginning story asks you to rebuild the farm of your grandfather and create relationships with citizens.

  • Dozens of mechanics, from sowing to crafting.

Stardew Valley Steam CD Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.

Yomawari: Night Alone

  • Release Date: October 29, 2015

  • Developer: Nippon Ichi Software

  • Publishers: Nippon Ichi Software | NIS America | Sega

  • Platforms: PlayStation Vita, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Steam

  • Metascore: 75

Yomawari: Night Alone is the only game in this list that shares horror with Undertale. Yeah, although the Toby Fox creation looks like a chill game, many of its scenarios are extracted from a weird world, leading to fear and a sense of anxiety. Something similar happens with Yomawari: Night Alone.

Both titles consist in the exploration of a strange setting – an underground world in the case of the first and a night town in the case of the second. Still, Yomawari: Night Alone is a game more focused on interacting with the surroundings than the Toby Fox title. Stones, the shovel, and money are significant tools you can use for several purposes, and they add several layers of gameplay.

Yomawari: Night Alone is a great experience for players like me, looking for completely free exploration and psychological horror where comedy and violence can coexist. I played this game for hours, and I can’t do anything else than recommend it.

Key Features:

  • Beautiful, charming, but dark visuals make you fall in love with this game.

  • Navigate across a nighty town while looking for your sister and dog.

  • An immersive story with a bunch of emotions and unexpected twists.

Yomawari: Night Alone Steam CD Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.

Honorable Mentions

We can’t leave out these two games that, although they are a bit far from Undertale, are equally relevant.

Earthbound

  • Release Date: August 27, 1994

  • Publisher: Nintendo

  • Platforms: Super NES, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo Switch, Wii U, Nintendo DS

Earthbound was released almost thirty years ago in Japan under the name of Mother 2. Since then, it has become one of the classics of the RPG genre, establishing many of the main features of further games. Earthbound tells the story of Ness, a young boy who discovers his psychic powers. Together with his friends, he must face a cosmic entity that came to the Earth, setting out to stop an alien invasion.

Cave Story

  • Release Date: December 20, 2004

  • Publisher: Studio Pixel | Nicalis | NIS America

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Wii, Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS, OS X, Linux, Nintendo Switch

Cave Story is an ode to the Metroidvania platformer genre and one of the first indie games to achieve fame, thanks to its incredible mechanics and adorable visual graphics. Like Undertale, in Cave Story, you explore an underground world in dozens of ways and plenty of secrets. The way you choose to complete your mission is up to you! Cave Story is surely a game that will beat your heart and make you laugh.
