Story and Background

Continuing the Moon Studios tradition, Ori and the Will of the Wisps starts after the events of its predecessor. A white guardian spirit Ori takes an unknown egg under his care after healing the Blind Forest. Soon after, the egg hatches, and we meet an adorable owl named Ku. 

The little owl continues to grow up, and time is passing peacefully. One day, owlet Ku learns how to fly and takes Ori on a journey. However, the fateful flight puts both of them in danger as the wind blows them away, separating from each other. 

Desolated on an unknown island, Ori has to explore the newly discovered, exotic world searching for his friend. It takes more than bravery to reunite and heal a broken land while Ori realizes his true destiny.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Ori and the Will of the Wisps continues the same formula left by its predecessor. The game emphasizes exploration, collecting items, upgrades, and other activities best known to platformer veterans. 

Also, some of the gameplay elements we’re inspired by Rayman and Metroid franchises. For example, you can access previously inaccessible places by obtaining new abilities. 

You’ll often find yourself fighting towering enemies and solving challenging puzzles. And it’s not an easy task by any means! The game is known for its increasing difficulty as you progress through the story. 

Challenging Platforming

The platforming aspect is demanding, requiring perfect coordination and sharp senses. For example, Spirit Edge is a sword used to perform combos at close range and destroy certain obstacles. 

On the other hand, Spirit Arc is a bow used to defeat bosses and obliterate enemies from afar. These weapons also come in handy when fighting waves of adversaries spawning from Combat Shrines. As a reward, you can upgrade Ori’s abilities. 

Each weapon has its unique powers, which use up your energy every time you use them. Therefore, you have to switch up your attack plans depending on your resources – and what enemies you’re taking on, of course!

Quests

Many new characters are quest givers or merchants scattered throughout the world. Completing quests is a good source of Spirit Lights (game’s currency) and special rewards, available only by finishing them. However, don’t expect anything special regarding the type of given tasks. 

Most of the time, you’ll need to bring some specific items, find a missing friend, or discover a particular part of the map. Those quests are optional, but they help develop Ori’s abilities faster.

Spirit Trials

Spirit Trials is another great feature if you want to step aside from the main campaign for a while and improve your platforming skills. It’s a pseudo-multiplayer mode, where you race against other players' ghosts trying to beat their records. 

There are 8 Spirit Trials in total, each with a different length and difficulty. You can also race against yourself offline, yielding 1000 Spirit Lights when you beat your record.
