Maneater is a single-player action RPG game played from a third-person perspective. Your main task is to get revenge on a cruel fisherman who killed your mother. You’re not an ordinary shark, though. Your jaws and wits are not the only tools you will use when on the hunt.
As for every RPG, Maneater offers a “detailed shark progression” where you expand your abilities from a small shark pup to a fearsome predator. The stat-driven systems provide a lot of customization regarding your shark to ensure you’re constantly evolving and getting stronger.
The open ocean is filled with danger lurking at every depth. The unforgiving waters won’t hand-hold you during your playthrough. You’ll often find yourself struggling and torn between starting a new quest or feeding on smaller fishes to evolve. The thrill of playing as a mutant shark on steroids makes it a fun game!
The story takes place on the fictional shores of the Gulf Coast in Louisiana. A film crew for a reality show follows an experienced shark hunter calling himself “Scaly Pete.” They are hunting for an adult bull shark who threatens the shores. After she reveals herself while going on a killing spree on the nearest beach, Scaly Pete manages to capture the shark.
Upon discovering that she’s pregnant, he cuts off the infant shark from her belly. He decides to let him live but leaves a permanent scar to identify him later. Our shark protagonist repays him by eating his arm before escaping to the ocean. Now the eternal enemies are preparing for a final confrontation.
Maneater offers a vast, underwater breathing world to explore. You can explore sunken wrecks, swamps and seek the right resources to grow and evolve. As you start in the coastal waterways of Louisiana bayou, the map instantly shows its diversity.
It’s divided into eight zones interconnected with sewer pipe mazes and underwater caves. Even out of the water, there’s a lot to see, so it’s worth cruising around on the surface in each area.
You will face diverse enemies while exploring – both human and wildlife. You can tear swimmers and divers apart, make shark hunters your prey and give humans a reason to fear you.
When fighting underwater, you have access to several attacks like charging into enemies, jumping out of the water, whipping your tail to stun them, etc. Keep an eye on your surroundings for combat advantages, such as using a swordfish as a spear.
Each region has predators that will try to kill you: barracudas, alligators, orcas, and even other sharks. Defeating them will earn you special skills, thus making your shark stronger. The longer you stay in combat, your ferocity meter increases, allowing you to enter brief feeding frenzies.
Your uncanny ability to evolve won’t come from thin air. Every shark needs to feed on aquatic wildlife to survive. This way, you’ll obtain nutrients, fats, minerals, and rare mutagenic to grow stronger. After acquiring enough nutrients, your shark will grow in size while unlocking new abilities to take on larger and deadlier creatures.
As you progress, your shark will slowly evolve into an adult mega-shark giving you access to advanced upgrades and customization options. External bone planets, Shadow Armor, or electromagnetic spikes – just to name a few.
