Elite Dangerous is a space flight simulator that takes place in our entire, albeit cutthroat, galaxy. It’s the fourth installment of the franchise and the sequel of Frontier: First Encounters, released in 1995. Now the experience is massively multiplayer gameplay where players’ decisions and actions affect the handcrafted evolving narrative of the game's persistent universe.
You take the role of a pilot of only a small starship, known as the “Commander” or “CMDR,” with a few credits to their name. You’ll have the chance to travel freely in a realistic 1:1 scale Milky Way, where star systems and space objects are where they belong.
In Elite Dangerous, every player’s story influences the connected galaxy. In this context, governments fall, battles are lost and won, and humanity's frontier is reshaped, all by players' actions in an interstellar war.
The game takes place in the year 3300, 45 years after the events of Frontier: First Encounters.
From time to time, isolated events may appear, such as the rebellion of slaves in a faraway empire or an interstellar war. It creates the feeling of a living, breathing universe.
The strongest point related to the plot is that the player's personal story influences what is happening in the galaxy. All your decisions affect the stories of other players, whereas their actions affect your universe.
In Elite Dangerous, you build your own story with your ship in the middle of asteroid fields. It’s a handcrafted, evolving narrative about your struggles and ambitions. Survive this epic space journey and build wealth, fame, and honor. With, or without, galactic superpowers.
You start the game with a small starship and a few credits in your pocket in the middle of an open galaxy. To advance in the game and earn some money, you need to role-play to acquire money and merit.
You can explore the galaxy and more than 400 billion star systems. Interestingly, 150,000 of these systems are re-created from real astronomical data.
This is the first chapter of the franchise to feature an online multiplayer environment called Open Play. In this vast, free-for-roaming world, many actions that are considered griefing in other multiplayer games are permitted, as long as there is a valid role-playing reason.
You can use the money from missions to customize your ships by purchasing engines, weapons, modules, scanners, etc. You can also buy a second currency called “Arx” with real money and use it to purchase visual changes for your ship.
There are three galactic superpowers in Elite Dangerous: the Empire of Achenar, the Federation, and the Alliance of Independent Systems. You can be part of a faction and collaborate to complete missions while earning several rewards.
The collective outcome of each faction's achievements determines the faction’s powers, proceeding objectives, and territorial control.
Regarding roles and rank, there are three-player roles with individual players' status: Combat, Trading, and Exploration. You gain experience points and rank in these areas.
