Games Like Dusk – Old School but Cool!

Games Like Dusk – Old School but Cool!

It seems like we live in the era of retro gaming! The old and gold titles are popping up here and there. We have the new Prince of Persia game, the 100th installment of Assassin’s Creed, Modern Warfare came back, and Doom got the sequel recently. Nostalgia is a strong factor in this society. And we are all for it!

The creators of Dusk know that as well! They have created a modern shooter that is actually extremely similar to the old-and-gold standards of Doom or Quake. If you have never tried it, it should be your go-to if you seek some nostalgia gaming. Here’s a list of games if you are a fan of the new old school. Let’s dive in!

What Is Dusk?

  • Release Date: January 2018

  • Developer(s): New Blood Interactive, David Szymanski

  • Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Amazon Luna, Mac operating systems

  • Meta Score: 88

Speaking of retro gaming, let’s start with the one in the title – Dusk! It’s an homage to the classic titles, mostly from the ID Software that conquered the gaming world back in the day. This is the first-person shooter you heard about in all of the games.

Dusk is a retro-inspired FPS set in the eerie town of Dusk, Pennsylvania, evoking a Lovecraftian atmosphere that adds to its unsettling charm. It's a place you wouldn't want to find yourself living in, but it sure makes for an intriguing game setting! There is something demonic going on in this place, and your task is to find out what actually happened. The government decides to do its best in order to see what is going on behind the ruins and harness its magic.

When it comes to gameplay, Dusk is certainly not something unique but classical to its core. The goal is to get out of this hellish place while taking care of all the cultists, demons, and scarecrows coming your way. To do so, you will have a whole array of weapons you can use whenever you’d like. Like in the old games! No limitations on taking out your magic sword, mortar, or dual-wielded sickles – you have all it takes to do what it takes! It’s like with the Unreal Tournament or the first Quake or Doom games.

And what can you do with dark places with even darker forces coming your way? The shooting is what you can expect from a game like this. It’s fast, it’s uncompromising, and it’s definitely one of the more fun we had in the last few months. It does not take itself too seriously, as you can not only go sideways but also get an additional degree of rotation in midair. What does it mean? Well, you can shoot demons while doing backflips. What more can you expect from a game, honestly?

Now that we know what we’re dealing with, let’s see games similar to this fantastic title!

  • Release Date: September 2019

  • Developer(s): Gearbox Software

  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, macOS, Stadia, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5

  • Meta Score: 91

The first game on our list is not a choice that you’d expect, but it is a good choice indeed. It’s Borderlands 3! And let us tell you – it’s a game that keeps you entertained for a long time! When it comes to similarities – there are plenty! You have a fast-paced shooter with dozens of different weapons to choose from at any time you’d please and millions of mobs to destroy on your way to getting on top of things!

The story revolves around four fresh Vault Hunters enlisted by Pandora's Crimson Raiders. Their mission? Put an end to the tyrannical twins, Troy and Tyreen Calypso, and their fanatical cult, who are hell-bent on seizing the otherworldly Vaults scattered across the galaxy for their own twisted purposes.

Borderlands 3 throws you into non-stop action, swarming you with hordes of enemies at every point. With four distinct classes to choose from, you can go for a Siren, a magical being sent from above, a mech-focused attack class, a hunter who is all about hunting, and a pet-lover with some beast up their sleeves. There's a playstyle to suit every gamer.

Whether you prefer teaming up with friends or going at it alone – you can do both! The multiplayer option is where the real fun lies, as you can go split-screen, online, and however you like, up to for players!

The Pandora and other planets you will be able to visit are great for some delightful murdering fun, with whole worlds to mown down! Regarding the sheer destruction aspect, this game is nothing you’ve ever seen before. And, for similar games to Dusk, it’s surely on the more complicated side when it comes to mechanics, but this is definitely something that you should not overlook.

If you didn’t like Doom – this was always the next big thing. And when it comes to games like Dusk, it should definitely be up there! Especially considering the fact that it’s the 20th anniversary of the game, and the remastered version looks pretty fun, in our opinion!

The gameplay is this fast-paced action thrill when you just want to blast through your enemies while smoking a cigarette and spitting out one-liners as if it were second nature. There are no possessed militants or mystical backwater cultists, but there are pigs and cops who definitely need some whooping. With Duke, you will discover a new and wonderful world of easter eggs that you have never seen before.

The enemy in this game is the nefarious Dr. Proton, who is all about dominating the world with his army of Techbots. You need to see what lurks beneath the surface in an attempt to stop his evil deeds! With updated visuals and even more one-liners – you just can’t let this one go. It inspired games like Dusk, and looking further into the future, we believe it will surely have a lot of influence over the genre. Check it out!

Serious Sam 2

  • Release Date: October, 2005

  • Developer: Croteam

  • Platforms: Xbox, Linux, and Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: 72

Now let’s get serious – and yes, we listed that game mostly because of that pun. But – not entirely! Serious Sam 2 is essentially what Dusk would be with a bit more spacious environments, more light, and even more enemies to go through. Dozens of weapons at your disposal at all times – check. Multiple enemy types, each one with a different attacking pattern – check. Stupid puns that you just have to make at all costs after playing – well, definitely with Serious Sam 2!

The game is pretty simple in what it tries to accomplish. Essentially, you just jump around and blast nearby enemies while not thinking too much about anything that’s happening. Also – you throw some one-liners from time to time to make the whole thing go smoother. Serious Sam franchise has often been praised for its wonderful locations and enemy design. It was not a dark and depressing world like most of the games in the genre. Instead, it opens up a beautiful world with sandy beaches, ocean, tropical jungles, and even spaceships!

As usual, you have a whole arsenal to choose from, a family of murdering weapons that you will deal with. There are shotguns, alien-based weapons, and axes. Everything you’d ever want from a title like this! It’s not demonic but alien in nature, so the enemies are…well, something in between, to be honest. The game is a blast, and you will definitely have tons of fun playing it. If not, well, then you were not serious enough about it! …we will walk ourselves out.

Ultrakill

  • Release Date: September, 2020

  • Developer: Arsi Patala

  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows and Linux

  • Meta Score: N/D

If regular killing is not enough – try ULTRAKILL! The one, the only murderous experience that will bring you back to the 90s like no game ever before could! The vibe will make you crawl from happiness by discovering a game that is relatively new while also being relatively retro. Regarding games like Dusk – you won’t find anything as similar to the Dusk experience as this one.

Let’s face it: The '90s gaming was the birthplace of modern shooters. Doom, Quake, Unreal – those were the titles that made the gaming world we all know and love nowadays. They had everything you could imagine at that time. Sprites that were almost photorealistic (at least that’s just what we thought), new mechanics like – 3D or different enemies, and this end-of-the-world vibe that we all enjoyed then.

Well, this game is everything like those titles and more! You are V1, a machine created for one thing only – murder! You need to go through the hell that is the world these days after humanity was wiped out of existence. There are plenty of souls, though still roaming around, and your task is to kill them all!

The best thing about this game is definitely how stylish it is. It actually gives you points for murdering enemies in the most fabulous way possible. Honestly, we have not seen anything like this since Carmageddon! The more efficient and cool you are at murdering, the more points you will get, and the more weapons you will be able to get for it. And let us tell you – you will have a wide selection for sure. Lasers, robotic arms with different abilities, and even rocket launchers – there is a lot to choose from.

There are plenty of things to do, and acquiring the S rank combos is something that will stay with us for a long time. If you enjoyed Dusk and you liked the Devil May Cry’s style of combos while also trying your best to survive through this new and improved form of Dante’s Inferno – then Ultrakill is just a game for you!

Turbo Overkill

  • Release Date: April 2022

  • Developer: Trigger Happy Interactive

  • Platforms: Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows

  • Meta Score: 87

And finally, there’s the one and only – Turbo Overkill. After Ultrakill, we thought we would go one step further. The game is essentially an experiment on what would happen if you created an alternative world where Cyberpunk creators and ID Software met and decided to develop a game that would combine the two. And that’s what we have here!

It’s a pink-inspired world where everything is cyber, and the rest is punk! As an homage to the old and wonderful games from the past, it lets you explore the narrow corridors of the human psyche only to find out the filth and dirt. If you were looking for games like Dusk to play in your spare time, but instead of demons, you prefer cool futuristic murdering to do – this game is definitely for you!

For example, have you ever tried a double chainsaw that you could run through your enemies with pieces of their body landing on your face? Well, this game allows you to do just that. You are Johnny Turbo (extremely creative name), who is on its way to clean the Night Ci…sorry, Paradise City from all the filth that is roaming the streets. And – you are prepared not to ask twice. The enemy at hand is AI “Syn,” which is generating soldiers trying to dominate the world around us.

As you can probably imagine, there are plenty of ways to eliminate them. It’s high-octane, non-stop action that demands everything from you and a little bit more on top of it. We are in love with this title for sure, and if you didn’t try it, well, then you may be next on Johnny Turbo’s list. And we would definitely advise against it! Check it out!
