Games Like Alan Wake 2 – Pick Your Next Action-Thriller!
What Is Alan Wake 2?
Release Date: January 2023
Developer(s): EA Motive
Platform(s): PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC
Meta Score: 89
Let’s now see where the phenomenon of Alan Wake II came from. Is it even one of the scary games, or is it something that was slapped on by the critics? The game is a sequel to the critically acclaimed Alan Wake, which portrayed the story of a crime novel writer with nightmares about someone trying to kill him. He went for a short vacation in Bright Falls, where, as usual, something terrible was about to happen.
Alan Wake's universe feels more like a TV series than other games on this list. There are spooky moments here, of course, but the emphasis is definitely on telling the story of a writer. Among so many similar games, we feel like this one should surely take the crown of the most Twin Peak-like game in the genre.
The second title is an upgrade to what we have seen in the original game. You get to play not only as Alan Wake but also as Saga Anderson – two separate stories that can be played whenever you want. Similarly to the first game, you use weapons to kill enemies that are not bulletproof and flashlights to kill, well, all the other ones. You need to keep track of your ammunition and batteries, as it is a horror game, so it would be weird if you just walked around murdering everything with ease.
Additionally, you have the Mind Place, where you can go to see the clues you have gathered, a pin-board with all of the most important facts about the cases, and the outline of the latest Alan novel in the Writer’s Room. It’s important as the elements in the plot can alter the space around Alan as well.
The game received universal acclaim for how well it portrayed a struggling artist, a novelist with nightmares that are somewhat incorporated into his writings. It’s a great story, for starters, and a fantastic game that you should definitely check out if you haven’t played it yet.

Dead Space Remake
Release Date: January 2023
Developer(s): EA Motive
Platform(s): PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC
Meta Score: 89
Next up, we have one of the best remakes we have seen in recent years – Dead Space from 2023. The initial release was fire, and so is this new one. If you played Alan Wake and you liked this feeling of unease, just like something straight from the Alien movie – this is the game for you!
When it comes to gameplay, it's pretty much in line with what you'd expect from Alan Wake. You're not some elite soldier or a superpowered hero; you're just an engineer trying to survive after a bunch of creepy Necromorphs crash your spaceship party. So, don't expect to be the best shot in the galaxy or anything. Your main goal is just to stay alive and keep those monsters at bay.
If you like jumpscares and jigsaw puzzles, you will have plenty of them here. Storytelling feels like a movie, but a different kind of what we have seen in Alan Wake. Nevertheless, both titles look and feel cinematic in their approach, and there is great emphasis put on the narrative aspect. Alan and Issac are just some people who found themselves in dire situations and are looking for a way out.
Dead Space Remake is on par with what the Alan Wake screenwriters were aiming for – creating a game that combines the story aspect with the feel of unease and being hunted rather than being hungry. With dozens of plot twists and direction changes, it really does feel like an Alan Wake game in a different space. Or – space in general.

Control
Release Date: August 2019
Developer(s): Remedy Entertainment
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One
Meta Score: 87
Next up, we have Control, a widely acclaimed game that was so popular that Xbox decided to get it on their platform once again so more people would be able to play it. Even more – there is a shared universe between the two games, but you don’t need to play each one to understand the events of the other. Nevertheless, some characters pop up here and there, and if you ask us – we are totally in for some crossover action!
So, the storytelling in Control is somewhat similar to what you have seen in Alan Wake, but not quite as much. You are Jesse Faden, who is all about hunting some paranormal activity all over the world with a little help from the Federal Bureau of Control. She is an agent set to take care of some ectoplasm-based businesses, but not only. This time – it’s personal. She is currently looking for her brother, and she finds herself in the weird corporation, where…well, we will not spoil it, but let’s just say it’s only a little bit weirder than your usual one.
Additionally, Jesse is not half as helpless as Alan because, as it turns out, she has some psycho-kinetic abilities. This means that she can move stuff with her mind, creating some barriers and lots of different mind-bending elements. If you’re a fan of this kind of gameplay – you will surely enjoy Control.

Lies Of P
Release Date: September 2023
Developer(s): Neowiz Games , Round8 Studio
Platform(s): PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC, macOS
Meta Score: 84
Next, we have Lies of P, a creatively named game that follows, well, Pinocchio on his quest to become the Elden Lord, sorry, to get rid of rogue puppets that infested this place. This is more of a soul-like kind of game, but there is a little bit of Alan Wake-ish aesthetic that we cannot say we overlooked.
For starters, it’s survival horror as well because the world of Pinocchio is much different than what you may have remembered from the Carlo Collodi books. It’s filled with vile creatures roaming around, and it seems like our lying friend is the only one who can do something about it.
The fictional world where P. roams around murdering dolls is such a wonderful experience and so cinematic that we just cannot stop thinking about Alan Wake when we play it. The gameplay is quite similar to what we’re used to with Alan. The design is extremely precise, and overall – it’s a game that you definitely have to play if you enjoyed some fighting sequences and horror elements in Alan Wake II. It's definitely worth recommending.

Resident Evil 4 Remake
Release Date: March 2023
Developer(s): Capcom
Platform(s): PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC
Meta Score: 93
Another game similar to Alan Wake II is also the second remake on our list, but let this not fool you; it looks like a totally different game. And – it’s a game that is so similar to Alan Wake II that we could not pass this opportunity to tell you all about it.
In this game, you step into the shoes of special agent Leon Kennedy, who finds himself tangled up in a bizarre cult situation in Europe. To complicate matters, the president's daughter has been kidnapped by this cult. Leon's mission? Rescue her and bring her safely back to the US. But things take a terrifying turn when he encounters the Ganados, villagers who have been afflicted by a strange plague that turns them into zombie-like creatures. Unlike typical zombies, though, they retain some semblance of humanity that was lacking in the previous installments.
The gameplay really reminded us of the Alan Wake II, as it is quite similar in how both heroes operate. You are walking around with pretty basic weapons, the fighting is slow, and you don’t feel like you could actually take out all the enemies without a proper plan. Additionally, it also reads like a good book about a weird cult. It’s almost like we are in some Grisham story or even – Alan Wake’s. Definitely a good read/walkthrough and one of the most fun experiences we had on this list.

The Medium
Release Date: January 2021
Developer(s): Bloober Team
Platform(s): PC, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S
Meta Score: 75
And if you like a tense world full of weird creatures – we have The Medium for you. Not only that, but it’s two games in one, with the main character – Marianne – being able to split her consciousness between the real and spirit world. It’s extremely similar to the world of nightmares we all know from the Alan Wake games, and definitely one of THE games you should have played in 2021. And not only because that’s pretty much all you could do.
There are plenty of similarities to Alan Wake's games. For example, Marianne's version in the spirit world can create a shield of light that will help her to save skin from the moths attacking her in this weird place. Additionally, she travels the halls of a Polish resort, looking for clues and motivations of the people who did this strange massacre here so many years ago. With the sound design on the top level, you will be scared of just walking around this place. Definitely, one of the more intense games when it comes to atmosphere, and surely a good afterplay for the Alan Wake series.

Layers Of Fear
Release Date: June 2023
Developer(s): Bloober Team
Platform(s): PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC
Meta Score: 75
Another gem from the talented folks at Bloober Team, which seamlessly blends horror with action-adventure, earning it a well-deserved spot on our list. It’s a remake of the first Layers of Fear game, but, similarly to the other ones on this list – a remaking done right.
The game is a marvelous experience from the beginning to the end. There are plenty of jump scares, disturbing storylines, and lots and lots of layers of fear.
Additionally, the Layers of Fear games are connected through the Writer character, creating those stories in the lighthouse, all by himself, trying to fight off similar dark entities that are tormenting Alan Wake.
The blend of a writer journeying through different dimensions while shaping their own stories adds a fascinating layer to the gameplay. And with a hint of Twin Peaks vibes thrown in, these games promise an immersive experience that's just right for fans of narrative-driven adventures.

Hunt: Showdown
Release Date: May, 2018
Developer: Crytek
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5
Meta Score: 81
And finally, we have Hunt: Showdown. A surprising title on this list, but let us tell you – there are plenty of similarities between the two games. Even though this one was made with more of a multiplayer approach, you have all the tropes seen in the Alan Wake universe and more! There is this weird forest that you are going through; you feel like you are being hunted at all times, and essentially – you are!
Hunt: Showdown combines the 1800s aesthetic and competitive fighting. As a hunter, you are on a quest to capture weird monsters in the forests/swamps everyone is talking about. So, you gather a team and decide to take them down in order to get some money. But, as you are hunting them, they are also hunting you as well. Each match has up to 12 players in teams of one, two, or three players.
During the hunt, you need to find equipment and weapons before the others. If you are able to succeed, you will surely win. If not, well, tough luck. If you want a game with a little more action than Alan Wake, this is definitely the title we can recommend.
