Best Games like Fable – Discover Similar Action RPGs
Fable was a huge discovery when it was first released in 2004. Instead of a grim and dark fantasy RPG, sadly non-existent Lionhead Studios took a fairy tale approach with plenty of gags and colorful graphics. However, it had plenty of dark moments (even at the beginning), but the game's overall feel was unique and original back then.
The original Fable game is considered the best role-playing game in the franchise due to its meticulously crafted fantasy world and original storyline, which fell short in the newest additions. Luckily, since 2004 plenty of role-playing games with fantasy elements have been released, so finding a similar title isn’t hard. If you’re tired of replaying Fable countless times, here are our top fantasy RPGs you can find on RoyalCDKeys!
Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Release Date: November 18, 2014
- Developer: BioWare
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3/4, Xbox 360/One
- Metascore: 85
Dragon Age series is a well-known franchise but a few years younger than Fable. Its commercial success does represent the quality it offers, however. Dragon Age franchise is highly acclaimed for its narrative, universe lore, character development, voice acting, and a strong emphasis on your choices affecting the experience.
Here, you will fight alongside your companions, who have their own personalities and backstories and will actively refer to your actions. In Fable, character progression is one-sided – utterly evil or noble hero. In Dragon Age, many decisions are morally grey, which gives much more depth to the presented story.
Combat is also more diverse than in Fable. Apart from the third-person, hack n’ slash experience, you can switch to a tactical camera and command your companions like in a strategy game. Also, the high-fantasy, colorful vibe should easily please all Fable fans.

Jade Empire: Special Edition
- Release Date: February 26, 2007
- Developer: BioWare
- Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, iPhone/iPad
- Metascore: 81
BioWare is most famous for the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series, which isn’t surprising. They’re great RPG games, but other games from the same studio are easily overlooked due to their popularity. Jade Empire is one of those games, and personally, it’s my favorite game from BioWare despite its age.
The game is set in a universe inspired by late medieval China and has gathered its own group of supporters throughout the years. The unique atmosphere and the opportunity to play the role of an adept of eastern martial arts is rather unprecedented for a fantasy game. Despite rumors of a sequel appearing from time to time, to this day, we have not lived to see it.
Even in terms of gameplay, it has completely different mechanics than other games from the studio. Like in Fable, combat is simple but satisfying. You can combine different stances with various magical abilities to create your own unique build. Even the morality system is similar, and your choices highly impact the world around you.
The game as a whole is rather dramatic but has its joyful moments spiced with a fair amount of catchy one-liners and hilarious moments. It’s a beast of an action RPG and probably the most underrated BioWare game that deserves much more recognition.

Outer Worlds
- Release Date: October 25, 2019
- Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
- Metascore: 82
What does the Fable series have in common with an FPS? Quite a lot, actually. The settings and story are set in the distant future, but in terms of vibe and feel, these are very similar games. It features the same dark humor, which is far more in line with Fable than any of the Fallout games. Outer Worlds was developed by the same people responsible for the Fallout series.
The game is set in a futuristic, sci-fi utopia ruled by corporate overlords who can do whatever they want. It’s not uplifting, but Fable's beginning isn’t either. While the world itself is bleak and depressing, people living in this universe seem to cope with the situation by being distant and sarcastic. Simply go to the nearest vendor, and you’ll immediately know what I’m talking about.
A roster of interesting characters is another great factor of Outer Worlds, especially your companions. Each one reacts differently to your decisions, and their one-liners will often make you laugh. The open world is pretty consistent, divided into several sections like in Fable. If you’re not a fan of massive open worlds like in The Elder Scrolls franchise, Outer Worlds is the way to go.

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
- Release Date: January 15, 2016
- Developer: Capcom, QLOC
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360/One, Nintendo Switch
- Metascore: 81
Dragon’s Dogma was a console-exclusive video game released back in 2012. A few years later, an enhanced version called Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen saw the light of day, expanding the original game and offering additional content for most platforms. Dragon’s Dogma should tick all the boxes for die-hard Fable fans.
The game takes place in a fantasy land of Gransys, where your own created hero has to defend its inhabitants from a looming threat of deadly dragons. Along the way, you’ll slay countless monsters and complete quests given by various NPCs. It sounds rather standard, but the gameplay aspect compensates for the lack of the original storyline.
Dragon’s Dogma shines through combat, and its hack n’ slash mechanics don’t disappoint. Rather than mindlessly mashing buttons, tough enemies have their weak spots, which you must aim for during combat. It adds some realism and feels enjoyably impactful throughout your journey. For an open-world RPG, it offers quite a lot and extends some mechanics from the Fable franchise while giving a lot of originality on its own.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Release Date: November 11, 2011
- Developer: Bethesda Softworks
- Platforms: All :)
- Metascore: 94
Our list wouldn't be complete without the most iconic game to date. It may be an overstatement for some, but every RPG fan knows the Elder Scrolls series. In Skyrim, you play as a mighty Dragonborn destined to stop Alduin, an ancient dragon who appears out of nowhere with its crew to take over Skyrim and then the entire Tamriel.
While fulfilling the prophecy of a chosen one and fighting a bunch of dragons along the way is all but fun, Skyrim’s biggest strength relies upon roleplaying. Here, you can create your own story and completely ignore the main story. And guess what, side-story quests are exceptionally written, and siding with all factions is extremely entertaining and rewarding. Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Dawnguard – just to name a few.
Combat-wise, Skyrim gives you immense freedom to build your character however you see fit. Whether it’s a sneaky archer, deadly assassin, cunning thief, or brute warrior, you’re up for quite a journey. Fable has given us different ways to approach combat, but Skyrim is on another level in this regard.
It’s also one of the few games with such an enormous modding community. It’s the main reason why Skyrim has become so popular, after all. SkyrimNexus is constantly updated with visual overhauls, combat mods, fanmade story expansions, and much more. Fable offers around 30 hours of gameplay for a completionist playthrough, while Skyrim is practically infinite due to new modded content being released regularly.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Release Date: May 18, 2015
- Developer: CD Projekt RED
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
- Metascore: 93
The Witcher game franchise took the gaming industry by storm. The first two games were brilliant, but the third installment gave it the worldwide recognition it deserved. Similar to Skyrim, it’s a must-play for every action RPG fan. While it’s more of a dark fantasy than a fairy tale, the superb writing will hook you immediately, and the atmosphere is not always grim and dark.
The main protagonist often throws dry and sarcastic comments in the least expected moment to clear the atmosphere. Humor is a strong and often underrated aspect of Witcher 3 since the storyline is rather dramatic and quite intense. Apart from the main questline, side quests are equally superb, and you’ll definitely feel the urge to discover and complete them all.
The major disadvantage, however, is the build versatility. Here, you play as the Witcher, and you’re forced to play as such. There are no character classes or different build paths like in Fable, so your build path is rather limited. There is some versatility with magic signs and alchemy, but ultimately, steel and silver swords are your primary weapons. However, the combat system rewards that limitation with responsive controls and motion-capture animations.
All in all, Witcher 3 offers a diverse experience in almost every aspect, minus the combat system. It features a huge world ranging from grim swamps to fairytale landscapes, memorable characters, and deadly monsters inspired by Slavic mythology. The Witcher series as a whole is a no-brainer for every action RPG fan, not only Fable.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning
- Release Date: September 8, 2020
- Developer: Kaiko
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
- Metascore: 70
If you’re looking for the most similar experience to Fable, Kingdoms of Amalur should come right up your alley. Re-Reckoning is a remaster of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning from 2012, set in a world created by a fantasy writer, R. A. Salvatore. Those familiar with his books will immediately notice how complex the game’s word feels compared to Fable.
Here, you’ll have more weapons, spells, and combos to learn; consider it Fable on steroids. Story-wise, it’s a classic zero-to-hero adventure coupled with some moral decisions, consequences along the way, and a cast of original characters. It’s one of those games where you want to look into every nook and cranny and talk to every NPC not to miss out on anything.
However, its combat system is the key reason for giving the Kingdoms of Amalur a chance. It’s responsive, flashy, and allows you to approach each fight differently. You can start a fight by sneaking up with a dagger, dash away to pummel your foe with arrows, and finish head-on with a two-handed sword, for example.
You don’t have to rely on one weapon; you can combine different specializations for more diversity. The combination of complex lore and advanced combat mechanics makes it a great alternative to Fable while still being an enjoyable RPG in its own right.

Gothic II
- Release Date: October 28, 2003
- Developer: Piranha Bytes
- Platforms: PC
- Metascore: 79
The Gothic series isn’t widely known in western countries, but it has a wide community of loyal fans in eastern Europe. The first three titles of the series are considered the best, and if you’ve never played them, now is the perfect time to catch up. However, the games are quite old, and the graphics were considered outdated even at the release time. I strongly suggest getting over it, as the story and gameplay aspect is definitely worth it.
In Gothic II, you play as a nameless hero, the chosen of the gods who have to bring peace to the land of Khorinis by slaying deadly dragons who invaded the land. However, our main character doesn’t act as a hero at all. He’s more of a regular dude trying to cope with the situation he got himself into. He won’t allow being pushed around and will often respond to his situation in a sarcastic manner.
The game doesn't have a large open world like other games on this list, but a more sophisticated one, like in Fable. Thanks to this approach, world design is very thoughtful and rewards exploration. There are no quest markers here, so you’ll have to actually listen to guidance given by NPCs to find the place they’re talking about.
You’ll have to join one of the three factions to proceed with the story: mercenaries, paladins, or fire mages. Each faction has different quests and a wide cast of memorable characters, so you’ll have to finish the game at least three times to discover everything. There are three build choices, as you can focus on magic, melee, or bows and crossbows.
There are also secondary professions like smithing, thieving, and alchemy. And with the Night of the Raven expansion, you're getting a new land to explore with a pirate theme to give you a completely different vibe. It’s all included in the Gothic Universe Edition we offer on our site.
Gothic Universe Edition Global Steam Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.
