The Best 20 Games Like Wasteland 3

The Best 20 Games Like Wasteland 3

In August 2020, InExile Entertainment brought us the post-apocalyptic indie game Wasteland 3, surpassing the expectations of long-time fans and new players who played a "Wasteland" title for the first time. It was nominated as "Best RPG Game of the Year" in the Game Awards, losing against Final Fantasy VII Remake.

These games bring a number of hours to explore the post-apocalyptic United States, but everything comes to an end, and Wasteland 3 is no exception. So, suppose you are still eager for a similar experience. In that case, sharing a particular environment and a turn-based combat experience brings you a list of 20 games like Wasteland 3.

We divided this list into four categories. Some games share many things with Wasteland 3, while others might have elements similar to InExile's game but have a different setting or focus.

Very Similar Games Like Wasteland 3

The next five games have a lot in common with Wasteland 3, which will be the best transition to give them a try, from the same setting (surviving a post-apocalyptic wasteland) to the same combat system (turn-based battles).

Fallout 2

  • Developer: Black Isle Studios
  • Release Date: September 30, 1998
  • Platform: PC
  • Metacritic Score: 86

The Fallout series was the main source of inspiration for the Wasteland franchise. Most of the games that feature a post-apocalyptic world are, as it is a primordial role-playing game of the gaming industry.

Fallout 2 doesn't deviate from the first game but expands it. It doubles down with a bigger map, a much-improved performance, and a more extensive and interesting storyline. The game will take you longer than it should, as many great side quests will keep you distracted from the main mission. While it is a bit basic in its turn-based tactical combat, it goes full throttle with its RPG elements and great dialogues.

If you are interested in one of the best games of all time, you can buy Fallout 2 Steam CD Key from RoyalCDKeys for less than three dollars.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

  • Developer: The Bearded Ladies
  • Release Date: December 4, 2018
  • Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC
  • Metacritic Score: 78

Mutant Year Zero is a well-mixed game across many genres. It works as a turn-based strategy game with RPG elements and a heavy focus on exploration around a semi-open world adventure.

The environment pairs it with Wasteland 3, although it has a twist: we are in a post-apocalyptic world where humans have to live with humanoid animals called "mutants." Two of them, a mischievous black duck and a strong and ripped pink pig (like an adult version of Lucas and Porky), will be two of your main characters traveling around this ruined world. You will rely on stealth and ambush your enemies, as you will always be far too outnumbered, with little room to breathe and heal.

Atom RPG

  • Developer: Atom Team
  • Release Date: December 19, 2018
  • Platform: PC
  • Metacritic Score: 70

Atom RPG is "reverse Fallout." While in Fallout, the US was a victim of a nuclear attack, in Atom RPG, we will see how things would turn out the other way. In this tactical RPG, we are what remains of the Soviet Union after the "Western Block" launched their bombs on Mother Russia in 1986.

But being a soviet survivor will come with lots of skills to learn. Like in Fallout, there are plenty of abilities to use, such as picking locks and stealing without being caught. It blends together with a thrilling combat system that will keep you engaged at any time.

Its non-linear approach will let you do many kinds of stuff outside the main mission, one of those being able to build your own base.

You can purchase Atom RPG Steam Key or a GOG key for this amazing game at the RoyalCDKeys store.

UnderRail

  • Developer: Stygian Software
  • Release Date: December 18, 2015
  • Platform: PC
  • Metacritic Score: 72

When the Metro saga turns into a tactical RPG, we get UnderRail. Now, it is not only the US or the Soviets, but the whole human race forced to live underground due to nuclear fallout. And to communicate with each other, people built a system of metro stations called the UnderRail.

This game is more focused on narrative, though. You are a random citizen who survived a war between two factions battling for supremacy. From there, you are completely free to engage in the story as you want. You can fight and settle things by talking or sneaking your way out of battles. There is a lot of freedom of choice for the players. What may lack in graphics, it excels in mechanics.

Skyshine’s Bedlam

  • Developer: Skyshine Games
  • Release Date: September 16, 2015
  • Platform: PC
  • Metacritic Score: 67

Skyshine's Bedlam introduces some Roguelike elements to the turn-based tactical RPG formula, making a rather unique mix of the genre.

Its aesthetic, while still about a post-apocalyptic world lacking resources, resembles more with Mad Max rather than Fallout or Wasteland itself. It is a difficult experience that will keep you thinking and second-guessing your decisions. Moreover, it shares the same engine as Banner Saga, giving a lo-fi and retro feel, which fits perfectly with the combat system.

Games With the Same Tactical Turn-Based Combat

Not all of these games share the same post-apocalyptic environment, but their combat system mechanics will remind you of Wasteland 3.

They will be great alternatives if you focus more on their combat rather than the narrative.

Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel

  • Developer: Micro Forté
  • Release Date: March 15, 2001
  • Platform: PC
  • Metacritic Score: 82

The last turn-based RPG game of the Fallout series and the first one with Bethesda involved as publisher. Don't confuse it with the PlayStation 2 game "Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel." That one is completely garbage and one of the worst action RPGs. Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel is a non-canon spin-off title to the main storyline from the first two Fallout games.

It shares a lot with its predecessors, but now it emphasizes more on its combat system rather than the narrative. So, we trade the deep character customization for a more linear set of missions, which draw inspiration from the beloved Final Fantasy Tactics. Although, it is a really good departure from the main series in exchange for more action, staying true to the source material.

Dead State: Reanimated

  • Developer: DoubleBear Studios and Iron Tower Studio
  • Release Date: December 4, 2014
  • Platform: PC
  • Metacritic Score: 70

Let’s throw zombies at the wasteland. Dead State: Reanimated is a survival game with many RPG elements, focusing on base building and management.

This game is about surviving the zombies roaming the streets, giving you plenty of room for choice and leading you toward a more diplomatic character or an authoritarian leader.

End State

  • Developer: Finger Squad
  • Release Date: December 1, 2022
  • Platform: PC
  • Metacritic Score: TBD

In a soon-to-be-apocalyptic setting, in End State, we command a group of mercenaries with the mission of eliminating terrorist groups which they are fighting to get the power of the country, Brekovia.

You choose how to "liberate"  the country, which mercenaries you hire, and how to engage each situation. A nice touch added to this title is the slow-motion zoom when a ballistic turns a limb apart, like in Sniper Elite or Fallout 3 and 4. It is worth noting that this game is still in Early Access on Steam.

Phantom Doctrine

  • Developer: CreativeForge Games
  • Release Date: August 14, 2018
  • Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC
  • Metacritic Score: 73

What if we avoid throwing nuclear bombs at the US or the URSS? That's where Phantom Doctrine comes in.

It is a spy adventure with tactical turn-based combat where we are a CIA or KGB agent trying to avoid these nations dooming our world into a complete wasteland.

But, if you want to compromise with any nation, you can play as a group of criminals watching everything from afar and engage in missions in a stealthy way or in open combat.

You can get Phantom Doctrine Steam CD Key or the Deluxe Edition from the RoyalCDKeys store at a discounted price.

Tactical Sci-Fi RPG Games Like Wasteland 3

Let's take many of the same elements of Wasteland 3 but with a sci-fi environment. All of these games have the same turn-based combat system, with now lasers, aliens, and high-tech on their equipment.

XCOM 2

  • Developer: Firaxis Games
  • Release Date: February 5, 2016
  • Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC
  • Metacritic Score: 88

Aliens took over the Earth, and we as humans must overthrow the world leaders and form a rebellion against this nefarious faction. But we are always at a disadvantage, as Aliens are more technologically advanced and even have psionic powers to make things harder.

XCOM 2 perfected the turn-based tactical combat system in a way that every game with the same mechanics will be compared with XCOM (and Wasteland 3 was no exception). While it may look like it has few classes to play with, their level of customization branches out far, and each one could fulfill many roles.

The game keeps going on, as it is one of the most successful Firaxis titles, and XCOM 2 received many DLCs and a full expansion with "War of the Chosen." It even got a new stand-alone game with XCOM: Chimera Squad, where we can play with Aliens.

You should give XCOM 2 a try, and you can get XCOM 2 Global Steam CD Key at RoyalCDKeys. Also, you will find a War of the Chosen Steam CD Key and the XCOM 2 Collection, with has all the DLCs and the expansion with the base game.

Gears Tactics

  • Developer: The Coalition and Splash Damage
  • Release Date: April 28, 2020
  • Platform: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
  • Metacritic Score: 80

On paper, this game should fail. A main third-person high-octane shooter turned into a slow turn-based tactical RPG? People won’t like it. But, on the contrary, it turned out to be an amazing addition to the Gears of War series.

It shares many of the same game features as XCOM, which is their main source of inspiration. Twelve years before the story of the first game, planet Sera is invaded by an alien race of Locust, quickly wiping out the human civilization from the surface. We, as Gabe Diaz, command a small group of recruits and try to sneak our way to the main villain, Ukon, the hive mind of the Locusts.

It is even more aggressive than many tactical RPGs, and the main attraction is its boss fights, where the game excels. If you are interested in playing a tactical Gears of War game, you can get Gears Tactics Xbox Live CD Key from the RoyalCDKeys store.

Stellar Tactics

  • Developer: Maverick Games
  • Release Date: September 23, 2016
  • Platform: PC
  • Metacritic Score: 83

Following the same topic as the other games, we command a group of mercenaries facing aliens in a turn-based tactical combat system in Stellar Tactics. But now we are exploring space and many different planets and solar systems.

The distinctive thing about Stellar Tactics is that it also features space exploration, where we could encounter other alien species, pirates, and mercenaries. In a sort of way, it mixes XCOM with Sins of the Solar Empire.

Phoenix Point

  • Developer: Snapshot Games
  • Release Date: December 3, 2019
  • Platform: PS4, Xbox One, and PC
  • Metacritic Score: 74

If you loved Wasteland 3 and XCOM, Phoenix Point is a great alternative. Created by the same director of the first XCOM game, Julian Gollop, it is a turn-based tactical RPG where we will manage a technologically advanced human squad facing aliens.

But, an interesting mechanic that the AI will have later on is that enemies will learn to counter your tactics and equipment. So, it better has plenty of options for more advanced missions.

If you are interested in following it with the "spiritual successor" of XCOM, you can get the Phoenix Point - Year One Edition Steam CD Key at the RoyalCDKeys store for a discounted price.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong

  • Developer: Harebrained Schemes
  • Release Date: August 20, 2015
  • Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC
  • Metacritic Score: 81

The cyberpunk world of Shadowrun mixes together magic and technology. In this futuristic setting, you will encounter many different races, like dwarves, elves, orcs, etc., among humans outside their typical medieval environment. Shadowrun has free character development; every action will count as you act in the shadows.

You can purchase a Shadowrun: Hong Kong Extended Edition Global Steam CD Key at a low price in the RoyalCDKeys store.

Similar to Wasteland 3 but With Different Settings

These last games share many mechanical aspects with Wasteland 3, but their setting, story, and environment are very different. Most of them went to the fantasy and medieval path.

So, if you want to play something similar to Wasteland 3 in-game mechanics but on a completely different setting, there are a few options that you can try out.

Divinity: Original Sin II

  • Developer: Larian Studios
  • Release Date: September 14, 2017
  • Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC
  • Metacritic Score: 93

Original Sin II is an isometric party-based RPG masterpiece with an immersive world where you can do whatever you want. There are plenty of options to engage in every situation and mission, and all your actions will have consequences (good or bad) depending on what you choose.

Everything is in the player's hands, from the race you pick to how you develop your character. With a turn-based combat system, you can think outside the box and find many solutions instead of just hitting stronger than the enemy. A true wonder of a game.

You should definitely try out this game, so get a Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition Global GOG CD Key or a Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition US Xbox One CD Key for Divinity: Original Sin II Definitive Edition in the RoyalCDKeys store.

Dragon Age: Origins

  • Developer: BioWare
  • Release Date: November 3, 2009
  • Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, and PC
  • Metacritic Score: 91

It is BioWare at its prime. And just before its decline. They just brought an amazing title to the gaming community with Mass Effect, and the very next game that followed the amazing Sci-Fi story was Dragon Age: Origins. It instantly became one of the best fantasy RPGs of all time.

There are six races to choose from, each with its own "origin story." Once we are done with them, we are ready to fend off the dark invaders from Earth as the Grey Wardens. Its appealing characters, deep lore, and addicting combat mix the perfect formula for an incredible RPG game.

You can purchase a Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition Global GOG CD Key in the RoyalCDKeys store.

Disco Elysium

  • Developer: ZA/UM
  • Release Date: October 15, 2019
  • Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC
  • Metacritic Score: 91

Being the most awarded title in the Game Awards of 2019 tells us something, right? It got four nominations and won all of them!

Disco Elysium is an RPG like no other. It mainly focuses on the narrative, how each character interacts with the other, and how your main character relates to the world. But this game is not just a bunch of text or a simple point-and-click adventure.

Your character development focuses mainly on physical, emotional, and psychological traits. As a detective, you can be a ruthless, cold brute; an over-emotional failure; or a stoic guy trying to do their best. The decision is completely yours, and how you make your character will affect where you live: a distant nation falling by government blockades plagued with many social issues.

You can get a GOG CD key of Disco Elysium: The Final Cut at the RoyalCDKeys store for a low price.

Bethesda’s Fallout Series

Last but not least, we should address Bethesda's Fallout games. Yes, it could include Tactics and the thrashy ARPG game, but we are talking about Fallout 3, New Vegas, and 4.

Most people prefer New Vegas from this bunch, as it has the best elements that Fallout 3 introduced, mixed with an enhanced RPG system and an amazing non-linear story.

While Fallout 3 is a great shooter, improved with the VATS mechanic and an expanded arsenal of weird steampunk guns, it falls short in the RPG department. And its story, while it is fun, also falls short with its ending and the lack of decision that your character ultimately has.

Fallout 4 is even more divisive. It is a spectacular shooter with great customization and even weirder guns and weapons. But the story is quite boring, and the RPG elements are…there? Neither too good nor too awful.

Either way, these games deserved a special spot on the list, as the series heavily inspired Wasteland 3, but their mechanics are completely different from a turn-based tactical RPG.

Do you want to try these out, anyway? You can get Fallout 3 GOTY Steam CD Key, Fallout: New Vegas - Ultimate Edition Steam CD Key, Fallout 4 US Xbox One/Series CD Key, and the Steam version for a low price at the RoyalCDKeys digital store.

Closing Thoughts

Wasteland 3 is an amazing turn-based RPG with a great setting that few could explore in a good way, as InExile Entertainment did. If you can't wait for the next title in the series and want to try something else, you have plenty of options in this list. From post-apocalyptic worlds to sci-fi and even fantasy worlds, there are unique aspects and characters to fulfill any role-play you want to get into.
