In August 2020, InExile Entertainment brought us the post-apocalyptic indie game Wasteland 3, surpassing the expectations of long-time fans and new players who played a "Wasteland" title for the first time. It was nominated as "Best RPG Game of the Year" in the Game Awards, losing against Final Fantasy VII Remake.

These games bring a number of hours to explore the post-apocalyptic United States, but everything comes to an end, and Wasteland 3 is no exception. Mutant Year Zero is a well-mixed game across many genres. It works as a turn-based strategy game with RPG elements and a heavy focus on exploration around a semi-open world adventure. 

The environment pairs it with Wasteland 3, although it has a twist: we are in a post-apocalyptic world where humans have to live with humanoid animals called "mutants." Two of them, a mischievous black duck and a strong and ripped pink pig (like an adult version of Lucas and Porky), will be two of your main characters traveling around this ruined world. You will rely on stealth and ambush your enemies, as you will always be far too outnumbered, with little room to breathe and heal.

Atom RPG is "reverse Fallout." While in Fallout, the US was a victim of a nuclear attack, in Atom RPG, we will see how things would turn out the other way. In this tactical RPG, we are what remains of the Soviet Union after the "Western Block" launched their bombs on Mother Russia in 1986.

But being a soviet survivor will come with lots of skills to learn. Like in Fallout, there are plenty of abilities to use, such as picking locks and stealing without being caught. It blends together with a thrilling combat system that will keep you engaged at any time. 

Its non-linear approach will let you do many kinds of stuff outside the main mission, one of those being able to build your own base.

When the Metro saga turns into a tactical RPG, we get UnderRail. Now, it is not only the US or the Soviets, but the whole human race forced to live underground due to nuclear fallout. And to communicate with each other, people built a system of metro stations called the UnderRail.

This game is more focused on narrative, though. You are a random citizen who survived a war between two factions battling for supremacy. From there, you are completely free to engage in the story as you want. You can fight and settle things by talking or sneaking your way out of battles. There is a lot of freedom of choice for the players. What may lack in graphics, it excels in mechanics.

Skyshine's Bedlam introduces some Roguelike elements to the turn-based tactical RPG formula, making a rather unique mix of the genre. 

Its aesthetic, while still about a post-apocalyptic world lacking resources, resembles more with Mad Max rather than Fallout or Wasteland itself. It is a difficult experience that will keep you thinking and second-guessing your decisions. Moreover, it shares the same engine as Banner Saga, giving a lo-fi and retro feel, which fits perfectly with the combat system.

The last turn-based RPG game of the Fallout series and the first one with Bethesda involved as publisher. Don't confuse it with the PlayStation 2 game "Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel." That one is completely garbage and one of the worst action RPGs. Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel is a non-canon spin-off title to the main storyline from the first two Fallout games.

It shares a lot with its predecessors, but now it emphasizes more on its combat system rather than the narrative. So, we trade the deep character customization for a more linear set of missions, which draw inspiration from the beloved Final Fantasy Tactics. Although, it is a really good departure from the main series in exchange for more action, staying true to the source material.

Let’s throw zombies at the wasteland. Dead State: Reanimated is a survival game with many RPG elements, focusing on base building and management. 

This game is about surviving the zombies roaming the streets, giving you plenty of room for choice and leading you toward a more diplomatic character or an authoritarian leader.

In a soon-to-be-apocalyptic setting, in End State, we command a group of mercenaries with the mission of eliminating terrorist groups which they are fighting to get the power of the country, Brekovia.

You choose how to "liberate"  the country, which mercenaries you hire, and how to engage each situation. A nice touch added to this title is the slow-motion zoom when a ballistic turns a limb apart, like in Sniper Elite or Fallout 3 and 4. It is worth noting that this game is still in Early Access on Steam.

What if we avoid throwing nuclear bombs at the US or the URSS? That's where Phantom Doctrine comes in.

It is a spy adventure with tactical turn-based combat where we are a CIA or KGB agent trying to avoid these nations dooming our world into a complete wasteland.

Aliens took over the Earth, and we as humans must overthrow the world leaders and form a rebellion against this nefarious faction. But we are always at a disadvantage, as Aliens are more technologically advanced and even have psionic powers to make things harder.

XCOM 2 perfected the turn-based tactical combat system in a way that every game with the same mechanics will be compared with XCOM (and Wasteland 3 was no exception). While it may look like it has few classes to play with, their level of customization branches out far, and each one could fulfill many roles.

The game keeps going on, as it is one of the most successful Firaxis titles, and XCOM 2 received many DLCs and a full expansion with "War of the Chosen." It even got a new stand-alone game with XCOM: Chimera Squad, where we can play with Aliens.

On paper, this game should fail. A main third-person high-octane shooter turned into a slow turn-based tactical RPG? People won’t like it. But, on the contrary, it turned out to be an amazing addition to the Gears of War series. 

It shares many of the same game features as XCOM, which is their main source of inspiration. Twelve years before the story of the first game, planet Sera is invaded by an alien race of Locust, quickly wiping out the human civilization from the surface. We, as Gabe Diaz, command a small group of recruits and try to sneak our way to the main villain, Ukon, the hive mind of the Locusts.

The distinctive thing about Stellar Tactics is that it also features space exploration, where we could encounter other alien species, pirates, and mercenaries. In a sort of way, it mixes XCOM with Sins of the Solar Empire.

If you loved Wasteland 3 and XCOM, Phoenix Point is a great alternative. Created by the same director of the first XCOM game, Julian Gollop, it is a turn-based tactical RPG where we will manage a technologically advanced human squad facing aliens.

But, an interesting mechanic that the AI will have later on is that enemies will learn to counter your tactics and equipment. So, it better has plenty of options for more advanced missions.

There are six races to choose from, each with its own "origin story." Once we are done with them, we are ready to fend off the dark invaders from Earth as the Grey Wardens. Its appealing characters, deep lore, and addicting combat mix the perfect formula for an incredible RPG game.

Being the most awarded title in the Game Awards of 2019 tells us something, right? It got four nominations and won all of them!

Disco Elysium is an RPG like no other. It mainly focuses on the narrative, how each character interacts with the other, and how your main character relates to the world. But this game is not just a bunch of text or a simple point-and-click adventure. 

Your character development focuses mainly on physical, emotional, and psychological traits. As a detective, you can be a ruthless, cold brute; an over-emotional failure; or a stoic guy trying to do their best. The decision is completely yours, and how you make your character will affect where you live: a distant nation falling by government blockades plagued with many social issues.

Last but not least, we should address Bethesda's Fallout games. Yes, it could include Tactics and the thrashy ARPG game, but we are talking about Fallout 3, New Vegas, and 4.

Most people prefer New Vegas from this bunch, as it has the best elements that Fallout 3 introduced, mixed with an enhanced RPG system and an amazing non-linear story.

While Fallout 3 is a great shooter, improved with the VATS mechanic and an expanded arsenal of weird steampunk guns, it falls short in the RPG department. And its story, while it is fun, also falls short with its ending and the lack of decision that your character ultimately has.

Fallout 4 is even more divisive. It is a spectacular shooter with great customization and even weirder guns and weapons. But the story is quite boring, and the RPG elements are…there? Neither too good nor too awful. 

Either way, these games deserved a special spot on the list, as the series heavily inspired Wasteland 3, but their mechanics are completely different from a turn-based tactical RPG.
