The Best 15 Games Like Shadow of War
If there is a genre of games that needs a true "Lord of the Rings" experience, it is an open-world, action-adventure game. And Middle-Earth: Shadow of War brought us that fantastic experience.
Regardless of not being faithful to Tolkien's books, it paid great respect to the original source material and delivered a fantastic combat experience while telling its own story in Middle-Earth.
It also gave us the Nemesis system, where enemy NPCs will remember you if you try to murder them and act according to it.
In RoyalCDKeys, we will show you many other role-playing games like Shadow of War to further expand your library with similar games. They share a similar dark-fantasy world, combat experience, or open-world action-RPG journey.
The Best 15 Games Like Shadow of War
Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
Developer: Monolith Productions
Release Date: September 30, 2014
Platform: PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360 and One, PC
Metacritic Score: 84
What better place to begin with than the first game of the saga. Some may argue the first one is better than Shadow of War. Although, that statement could actually be true regarding its story, as it hits much closer events.
But regardless of any opinion, if you are interested in the main storyline, you should learn how everything began for Talion. Its combat system is quite the same, but Shadow of War introduced many new skills and RPG elements to the table. And if graphic fidelity is something that will bother you, it received a free HD upgrade on Steam.
If you haven’t played Shadow of Mordor, you should definitely give it a try. And you can purchase a Steam CD key for “Shadow of Mordor - Definitive Edition” at a discounted price in the RoyalCDKeys store.
GreedFall
Developer: Spiders
Release Date: September 10, 2019
Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC
Metacritic Score: 72
One of the main elements that make GreedFall so attractive is that you control your own destiny throughout the game.
Set in a world that mixes fantasy elements with 17th-century technology, you, as De Sardet (a neutral human), need to choose your own clever path, creating diplomatic relationships with different factions.
Although it is nowhere near the Nemesis system from Shadow of War, factions have a big impact on your playthrough as you make your way to fight monsters and face a world filled with scoundrels and enemies.
You can purchase a Steam CD key for GreedFall at a very low price in RoyalCDKeys.
Assassin’s Creed: Origins
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Release Date: October 27, 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Metacritic Score: 84
The Assassin's Creed series was starting to feel tiresome, and the awful launch of Unity was driving sales away. So, Ubisoft decided to finally give the Assassin's Creed franchise a fresh look.
Origins maintains some of the same ideas, but they improve upon the formula from the original game. We are no longer in Renaissance Europe. Now we travel all the way back to Ancient Egypt with Cleopatra in a game that focuses more on combat with some RPG elements, traveling around a much bigger open-world scenery.
You can purchase an Xbox One CD key for the Deluxe Edition from the RoyalCDKeys store.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Developer: CD Projekt RED
Release Date: May 18, 2015
Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PC
Metacritic Score: 93
One of the best games of our generation. When it came out, this award-winning adventure swept every ceremony, including getting "Game of the Year" in the Game Awards.
Andrzej Sapkowski's books became a cultural phenomenon around the world thanks to the huge success of The Witcher 3. It deviated from the hardcore RPG experience of the previous games and became a more "action game" while maintaining a few crucial RPG elements.
A fantastic narrative and story, excellent dialogues and voice acting, and a completely immersive world is the perfect jump to do after playing Shadow of War.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a "must-play" for every gamer, and you can get a GOG CD key with the Expansion Pack from RoyalCDKeys.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Developer: Guerrilla Games
Release Date: February 28, 2017
Platform: PlayStation 4, PC
Metacritic Score: 89
Another new world to explore is the one presented in Horizon Zero Dawn. In this wide open-world, you will be controlling Alloy as a Hunter, traveling places filled with cybernetic animals and dinosaurs.
While there aren't magical abilities like in Shadow of War, all are replaced by a mix of hunter skills and high-tech arrows and ropes. There is character progression and a simple crafting system to keep replenishing your armament.
Batman: Arkham City
Developer: Rocksteady Studios
Release Date: October 18, 2011
Platform: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC
Metacritic Score: 91
Rocksteady Studios and Warner Bros. capitalized on the huge success of Cristopher Nolan's Batman movies. And following one of the best comic-book movies of all time came one of the best comic-book video game series.
Batman: Arkham Asylum became very popular immediately, but what launched the series to the top of the gaming industry was Batman: Arkham City. Gotham City became an open-world scenario with plenty of room for exploration and solving crimes while also dealing with mobsters and villains along the way.
The dark and moody tone from Shadow of War fits perfectly for a third-person Batman game.
Get a Batman: Arkham City Steam CD key at a very cheap price at RoyalCDKeys. And for a couple dollars more, you will be able to get a Steam CD key for the Arkham Collection, featuring the three mainline games of the series.
Marvel’s Spider-Man
Developer: Insomniac Games
Release Date: September 7, 2018
Platform: PS4, PS5, PC
Metacritic Score: 87
If we talked about a super-hero open-world game, we can’t leave out the latest Spider-Man games from Insomniac.
Marvel's Spider-Man took many lessons from the Arkham series and adapted to the friendly neighbor "Spidey." You will be able to swing over New York, completing missions and dealing with a new villain, Mr. Negative, alongside some well-known faces like Scorpion, Rhino, Vulture, Electro, and Doctor Octopus. So, if you are up to an open-world action-packed game while swinging through the air, Spider-Man would be a lighter departure from Shadow of War.
Conan: Exiles
Developer: Funcom
Release Date: January 30, 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC
Metacritic Score: 68
Conan: Exiles has plenty of elements drawn from The Witcher 3: monsters, violence, brothels, and plenty of loot. But, in the world of Conan, everything is more brutal and ugly.
You will be facing monsters throughout the desert, looting the best gear these beasts will drop, and make your way to free the great Conan The Barbarian, just to fight in more epic battles through the lands.
The game has a more gritty and brutal tone than any other of the games similar to Shadow of War, battling in an open-world against different monsters and factions.
You can get a Steam CD key for the Conan: Exiles base game at a low price from the RoyalCDKeys store. And if you end up liking it (or if you watch some trailers and gameplay to convince yourself), you can also get the Complete Edition for Steam, as there are plenty of expansion packs that enhance the game even further.
Nioh 2
Developer: Team Ninja
Release Date: March 12, 2020
Platform: PS4, PS5, PC
Metacritic Score: 86
Team Ninja already did a fantastic job with the first Nioh game. So, for the sequel, they decided to lift up everything to the extreme. Faster, gorier, and harder.
While most of the games above are placed in western locations (Europe and the US), if you want a change of setting from Shadow of War, go with Nioh 2. It transports us to the Japanese Sengoku period, as we control Hide, a samurai tasked to hunt down Yokai spirits.
Defeating these evil spirits will grant us a new set of powers, but the spirits will make things harder. They have the ability to create a Dark Realm, which will increase the difficulty and make us face more challenges.
If you are up to playing a "Japanese Shadow of War," you should try out Nioh 2. You can get a Steam CD key for the Complete Edition from the RoyalCDKeys store.
Mad Max
Developer: Avalanche Studios
Release Date: September 1, 2015
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Metacritic Score: 73
What if you take Mordor and add guns and vehicles? Quite a weird question, but that's ultimately Mad Max when compared to Shadow of War.
It is mainly a vehicle combat game where most of the time, we will be upgrading the Magnum Opus. It is centered on roaming around the wastelands, completing main and side quests, and fighting against the War Boys. You will also need to pay attention to gathering food, water, and fuel for your vehicle.
If you are up for this adrenaline rush of a game, get a Steam CD key at a low price in the RoyalCDKeys store.
Far Cry 5
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Release Date: March 26, 2018
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Metacritic Score: 78
Let's deviate a bit from fantasy worlds once more, so we can recommend another action-packed adventure game that knows how to utilize its open-world structure.
Far Cry 5 is another Ubisoft game that made it into the list. Although Far Cry 5 kept expanding on the formula from their previous games rather than doing something completely different, as happened with Assassin's Creed Origins.
It is an open-world, first person shooter that allows the player to freely explore and engange combat in many ways, with a vast array of ranged and melee weapons. The bombastic action of Far Cry tried to add a bit more of realism on the fifth title, with new mechanics like “bullet drop.” All in a setting in the town of Hope Country, Montana, where we try to release its people from the cult of Joseph Seed.
It is a good departure for those that want a first-person shooter experience, with plenty of options to deal with your enemies in a large open-world.
If you are interested in getting Far Cry 5, you can get a CD key for Xbox One/Series X from RoyalCDKeys.
Dark Souls III
Developer: FromSoftware
Release Date: March 24, 2016
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Metacritic Score: 89
If we were talking about dark-fantasy worlds, we can't leave out the Dark Souls series behind. Each game in the series improved from its predecessor, and since Bloodborne, FromSoftware keeps delivering excellent titles. And for their mainline franchise, Dark Souls III became the best one of the series.
Now there are plenty of enemies to fight with and various ways to build up your character in the dying realm of Lothric.
You will find many ways to face up to one of the more challenging games of the last generation, with a dark and gritty tone that resembles Shadow of War. It introduces new melee weapons, ranged weapons, spells, miracles, ashes of war, and more to ever expand their arsenal from previous Dark Souls.
The only thing you will trade up is that Dark Souls III is quite linear compared with the rest of the list. But you will get the best boss fights you will ever wish for.
Try out Dark Souls III and get a Steam CD key with its Season Pass (it comes with two DLCs) or an Xbox CD key for the Deluxe Edition from the RoyalCDKeys store.
Lords of the Fallen
Developer: Deck 13 and City Interactive Games
Release Date: October 28, 2014
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Android, iOS, PC
Metacritic Score: 73
Lords of the Fallen was one of many "Dark Souls clones" to release after the success of the FromSoftware's series and was the first "triple A" clone.
It takes a more violent tone than its main influence in an action-fueled game where you will fight against grotesque and bizarre monsters and demons.
It contains many RPG elements to upgrade your gear and gather more loot throughout your run as Harkyn, a convicted sinner who became the last hope of mankind. You can interpret the story as you are fighting after a bad ending in Shadow of War.
Get a Steam CD key for the Deluxe Edition of Lords of the Fallen for a low price at the RoyalCDKeys store.
Vampyr
Developer: Don’t Nod Entertainment
Release Date: June 5, 2018
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC
Metacritic Score: 72
Now let's go to the dark alleys of 1918 London. Playing as Jonathan Reid, in Vampyr, you are on a quest to help the sick while also trying not to give yourself up to the bloodthirst, as he was infected with vampire blood.
You will travel around the dark and bloody streets of London, fighting against Vampyr hunters, monsters, and other Vampyr clans. The game also features many interesting dialogues with various NPCs in your quest to help the sick and endure your hunger for blood.
Get a Steam CD key or an Xbox CD key for Vampyr at a very low price in the RoyalCDKeys store.
Kingdom Come Deliverance
Developer: Warhorse Studios
Release Date: February 13, 2018
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Amazon Luna, PC
Metacritic Score: 76
For those that want a pure medieval experience, with no magic or monsters luring around your land, you have Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
It is the most realistic game on the list. It combines open-world exploration and experience with medieval combat similar to Chivalry or Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (minus the spells).
You will have to make all your way through to the top, starting as a novice blacksmith. Your peaceful life is completely ruined when invaders slaughtered your family in front of your eyes. Since then, you ought your life for the rebellion groups, fighting against the tyranny of Lord Radzig Kobyla.
You will face many encounters with several ways to resolve conflicts. Or you can always charge head-first into battle, slaying your enemies and gathering loot for better gear and equipment. It also features multiplayer, where you can engage in PvP combat.
If you are interested in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, you can purchase a Steam CD key for the Royal Edition (which includes every DLC) from the RoyalCDKeys store.
Closing Thoughts
The Nemesis system replicated in Shadow of War was, unfortunately, one of its kind. Some actions in games like The Witcher 3 or Horizon Zero Dawn will determine specific consequences against certain people. But not in the way that Shadow of War did.
The game features plenty of fearsome enemies like the Orcs and Sauron's armies, and some other features will make each experience unique. The Nemesis system is what makes Shadow of War so special, similar to the choices in The Witcher 3 or numerous villains in Batman: Arkham City and Marvel's Spider-Man.
Similar games like Middle-Earth: Shadow of War will offer different approaches, from going to a more realistic side or sticking to the fantasy roots. But all of them will offer an open world ready to be explored and tackled on, while giving you some character progression.
