Microsoft Office Compatibility With Windows 10
Microsoft Office Compatibility With Windows 10
The Windows Operating System and the Microsoft Office Suite are the two most famous software Microsoft has ever released. And since they are from the same company, it’s easy to ensure that both Windows and MS Office work very well together, with all the features and different versions of Office working on Windows. That’s true but only to a certain point.
Since Microsoft announced Windows 10 back in 2015, users started to wonder which versions of Microsoft Office work and are compatible with Windows 10. Office 2016, the latest version of Office suite, released in the same year of the operating system, would work on Windows. But can we say the same about older versions of Office programs?
Office 2010, Office 365, and Beyond
Microsoft offered Windows 7 and 8.1 users a free upgrade to Windows 10. But before going for these free upgrades, it was essential to know if earlier versions of Microsoft Office would work on the newest Windows 10 version. The answer to that question is: Office 2010 and ahead are compatible with Windows 10. The exception is Office starter 2010, which Microsoft and Windows no longer support.
Office editions released after Windows 10 are also compatible. That way, Office 2019 and Office 2021 are compatible and, in some cases, may even be pre-installed on your computer.
Windows 10 users will have no compatibility problems as Windows 10 will be supported by Microsoft until the end of 2025. Further versions of the Microsoft Office suite will most likely still work for a long time after that. Office 365 packages work fine with Windows 10, either.
Older Versions of Office
Those who access and use older versions of Office Suite will see they don’t have more support from Microsoft, but, despite any compatibility problem, these versions may still work. For that, you will need to use the compatibility mode of Windows 10.
Many users reported that Microsoft Office 2007 works without the compatibility mode, but there is no official info about it. Thus, we recommend you to stick to Office 2010 or newer (with the mentioned exception of Office Starter).
Bugs, Glitches, and Technical Difficulties
Some users with older editions of Office also complained about some bugs and technical problems they had to face. These problems go from slow startups of Office apps to the disappearance of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents and files, for example. The older your Office version, the worse the problems may be. That’s one of the reasons why people should let these older Office applications go.
Older Operating Systems
Windows 10 is still very actual and safe for use. The compatibility problems it may present are related to the Office version and not to the OS itself. This can’t be said about older versions of the OS.
Windows XP, Vista, and others are no longer supported and, besides being vulnerable, may present several compatibility problems. Devices with these older OS installed lost the advantage of the free upgrade and will need to purchase the Operating System again, but we strongly recommend that, even though you have to pay.
The Compatibility Chart
To summarize everything we said before, there is nothing better than bringing a compatibility chart, so users can see which versions of Office are supported and will work on Windows 10 if they have the OS on their computer.
- Office 2000: Not Supported (May Work with Compatibility Mode)
- Office XP: Not Supported (May Work with Compatibility Mode)

Conclusions
Now you know how safe you are with Windows 10 and which Office versions are compatible with your system. Some older editions of Office may be attractive for old features that have been removed, but there is a reason for its publisher not to support them any longer. Anyway, Windows 10 users know they are safe and can use practically any Office version they want.
