Games Like Metal Gear Solid – Titles Where the Plot Matters!
What Is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain?
Release Date: September 2015
Developer: Kojima Productions
Platforms: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox One
Meta Score: 95/100
Nevertheless, the first game on this list can’t be anything other than Metal Gear Solid V. Mostly, for those of you who never got to experience this stealth-action-genre masterpiece, we are here to help you out.
As usual in the franchise, you get your stealth action going on as the Venom Snake, also called Big Boss these days. The Cipher organization is at it again, so you need to take revenge for all the wrongdoings they did to you.
As usual, Hideo Kojima creates a game that gives you something to think about for years to come. We feel like any delving into it will probably be a spoiler, so let’s just say – those video games are worth getting into intellectually.
Nevertheless, the game takes place in Afghanistan and Africa, for that matter. You can approach them freely and utilize some sneak tactics to complete the missions. You have the whole base to use, where you can get new equipment and research your enemies.
But you will not go into this war alone. Although it’s a stealth-action genre, you can have a buddy with a D-dog wolf and sniper – Quiet. So, as all the Metal Gear fans already know, and you have probably heard after so many articles published about this title – it’s worth checking out. It’s one of the best in the Metal Gear franchise and a sandbox game (of sorts), so you should give this one a chance.
NieR Automata
Release Date: February 2017
Developer: PlatinumGames
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Meta Score: 90/100
Moving on, we have – NieR Automata. If you haven’t heard about this – you are in luck, as you will get to experience one of the most heartbreaking and exciting games, where you get to go guns blazing but also – cry a little about what it means to be a human being.
In this title, you are a high-heeled robot called 2B, in its pursuit to save humanity from evil machines. While doing so, we experience some of the most exciting and thought-provoking situations we have ever experienced in the gaming industry. And trust us – we played a lot of games!
The plot revolves around the conflict between the alien-built machines and humans with their androids. The combat is fast-paced, full of combos and outlandish weapons that 2B uses. The game features a lot of fascinating gameplay mechanics, aerial fights, and tactical attacks with your A2 prototype friend and scanner Android 9s.
Moreover, unlike other games on this list, it’s also an RPG, so you can develop your skills, customize your equipment, and much more. It’s one of the most similar games to the Metal Gear series, as it’s probably the deepest of them all. Some games on this list may be more in the stealth genre, but this one is definitely in the thinking one. So – don’t hesitate and get into it!
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
Release Date: November 2020
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia
Meta Score: 84/100
Next up, we have the Assassin’s Creed representatives in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. When it comes to games with open world, where you get to do different missions at your own pace while changing your equipment in your base – there are not many better ones than Assassin’s Creed.
In this installment, we focus on attacking England as Elvior, a legendary Viking raider who is also an Assassin! And, because of that, he is involved in the assassins vs templars fight that occurred in the world.
Additionally, you get to play as the big and hard-hitting male or the female version of the Viking. Moreover, the game allows you to modify the physical appearance of the Vikings you play to change their hair, war paint, and even tattoos.
On the other hand, Missions are similar to what you may have remembered from this series. You have your assassination-style missions, some collecting to do, puzzle solving, and even supernatural elements as usual in recent installments.
Additionally, you can experience what people loved from Black Flag – the settlements! And it’s not only about your level; it’s all about your skills. So, there will be no more of this “I'm hitting a guy with a knife, but it does nothing because he’s level 10, and I’m only 6” kind of shenanigans. This time, you can’t kill someone because you don’t have the skill necessary to do so. So, it’s a much more difficult system to cheat.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Release Date: August 2016
Developer: Eidos-Montréal
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Linux, macOS
Meta Score: 84/100
Next up, we have the Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. It’s the game to play if you like a more futuristic world where you not only get to be stealthy but also – do some cybercrimes on your own.
In this installment of the franchise, you are Adam Jensen. Once a human, you now are a half-android with dozens of advancements that help you out in the most dire of situations. The whole world is split between those who like augmented reality and those who would rather, you know, kill all of them. You are working for Juggernaut Collective, spying on the Illuminati organization, which, as you may have guessed, controls the whole world.
But, the best way to go about your day as a double agent is to be stealthy. And this is where your bio-advancements come into play. Stealth becomes a whole lot smoother when you can upgrade your hearing, vision, and even control how much noise your footsteps make. Of course, there are plenty of ways you can get through this game with creative solutions or just go all-out guns blazing. Your choice, after all!
The main drive of this game is definitely the plot, though. The thought-provoking world we know from the Human Revolution is an interesting way of delving into what it truly means to be a human being. These are the kind of questions that don't come up in every game you play, so it's worth savoring them when they do.
Hitman 3
Release Date: January 2021
Developer: IO-Interactive
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Meta Score: 87/100
Hitman 3 is the third game of the famous Hitman franchise, and from the recent Hitman games – definitely the best of all of them. Stealth elements, an open world to do some damage in, maps with many different ways to take care of, ekhem, the problem – it’s just astonishing how polished this title is. If you liked Blood Money and wanted to get to know this world a little better, it’s also a fantastic title for you.
So, what it’s all about? Well, you have the big maps that you can enjoy as Agent 47 finishes the job at hand. The game looks absolutely stunning; there are dozens of enemies for you to, well, probably avoid, as you are a secret assassin trying to get by, after all. Unlike Snake, you are not looking for revenge or justice. You are just doing this for money because the “evil corp” created you as the killing machine you are.
As usual in Hitman games, you get to change your clothes to fit in the community you are trying to infiltrate, get past the guards, or just simply think of other strategies to finish the mission. Additionally, you can change how you approach the mission, so the replayability factor is off the hook!
So, regarding stealth games, Hitman is high up there with the best. It may not be as stealthy as Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series or as bombastic and fantasy as Dishonored, but those are all great games that we can certainly advise you to check out!
Dishonored
Release Date: October 2012
Developer: Arkane Studios
Platforms: PlayStation 3, Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Meta Score: 91/100
Speaking of it – Dishonored is the next game on our list. This time, everything rhymes with the Metal Gear Solid series. You have a good protagonist who is trying to do the right thing; you have the stealth elements, great fighting, incredible climate, and, well, a very good plot, after all. Maybe it’s not the Kojima-level good, but it’s still an entertaining journey.
So, what it’s all about? Well, Arkane Studios has not made many mistakes (let’s not talk about Redfall), and this is one of their best games ever. You are an assassin for the crown falsely accused by the evil ones, so you need to stay in the shadows and clear your name. As a supernatural assassin, you get to utilize not only classic weapons like darts or knives but also invisibility or teleportation.
Playing Dishonored is extremely fun; we cannot recommend this one enough. Of course, there will be plenty of challenges on your way: the new generation of assassins to train, how to put the right camouflage, or just the not-so-welcoming environment that may be problematic for those in hiding. However, if you relish the thrill of surprising your foes like a ninja descending from the shadows, have an affinity for steampunk aesthetics, and enjoy wielding a variety of weapons to match your enemies – Dishonored is the perfect game for you!
Sniper Elite 4
Release Date: February 2017
Developer: Rebellion Developments
Platforms: PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Meta Score: 81/100
And finally, we have the Sniper Elite 4 game for all of us to enjoy. Sniper Elite is a pretty weird series of games, as you get to play as a well-elite sniper who is just casually winning wars by himself and decimating dozens of soldiers on his way. In this installment, as the intel found out some rumors about a new Nazi weapon, you need to go to San Cellini island too, oh, let’s just face it, kill a lot of Nazis in a pretty horrific way.
Regarding gameplay, it’s a stealthy action game from the third-person perspective, where you need to infiltrate the enemy lines and kill them from afar.
Additionally, the game features X-ray kill cam technology, so you can see the hits to the head or other pain points of your enemies. For example, if you hit them in the leg, they may lose balance and such. Moreover, the fourth game in the series features Scope Zeroing, where you can aim straight without calculating the distance or wind.
Additionally, there is a lot of exploration in campaign mode, where your character can develop new skills, access even greater weapons, find side missions, collectibles, and more! The storytelling in this game really pays off, and if you have a sense of humor, you will definitely appreciate the wicked world of Sniper Elite. Additionally, with an advanced multiplayer mode, there is no way you will not feel at home with this title. It’s one of those franchises that, over decades, perfected and evolved their products, and the results are astonishing. Definitely worth checking out!
