PlayStation has a lot of exclusive games, and it’s one of its strongest selling points. Series like God of War, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Gran Turismo, and many others prove it’s worth getting the most famous console. Sony is also adding new franchises to this ever-growing family, and Ghost of Tsushima is one of their latest creations.

This open-world game stole the hearts of many players due to its thought-out storyline and visual feast, even on the retiring PlayStation 4. It’s an epic journey set in historically accurate feudal Japan, so no wonder it was so well received.

There’s no other title exactly like it, but plenty of games share similar ideas and even the same combat system. Thus, we’ve compiled a list of the best games that have something in common with Ghost of Tsushima and are not console exclusives. Whether you love its swordplay, storytelling, or historical accuracy, you’ll indeed find an excellent alternative on this list. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a great starting point when looking for a similar experience to Ghost of Tsushima. Since Sekiro is a samurai action game, it’s a no-brainer to pick up. And playing as samurai is as fun as ever due to the plethora of mechanics the game provides. However, the default difficulty is a bit harder than Ghost of Tsushima’s hardest, so keep that in mind. 

You play as a samurai named Sekiro whose task is to rescue his master, a young heir to an ancient bloodline. He tries to take revenge on the kidnappers who cut off his hand and left him to die. Sekiro is rescued, however, and his limb gets replaced by a mechanical prosthesis.

The game also mixes historical elements with fantasy as you’re going to fight monsters inspired by Japanese myths. Some are servants of human enemies, while others you’ll meet during boss fights. Don’t be surprised when you have to fight a headless ape that hurls toxic poo.

The gameplay is more linear when compared to open-world games. Instead, you’re getting a fluid, action game traveling through meticulously crafted levels inspired by Japan’s Sengoku period. Of course, those places are filled with enemies and bosses waiting to end your journey prematurely.

It features a very similar combat system to Ghost of Tsushima, as it rewards timed blocks, precise strikes, and the use of various ninja tools. Bear in mind that combat is more challenging than what you’ve been used to, like in every From Software game. It revolves around breaking your opponent's guard and dealing powerful blows.

Despite not being an entirely open-world adventure, it’s an excellent alternative to Ghost of Tsushima, with beautiful levels and one of the best combat systems to date. An instant recommendation.

Elden Ring

Every From Software game could fit on this list. Many modern RPGs take plenty from Dark Souls developers, and Ghost of Tsushima isn’t an exception. Elden Ring is the pinnacle of From Software creations and the most innovative title compared to their previous games. Sekiro and Dark Souls creators joined forces with fantasy writer George R. R. Martin creating a new, mysterious world ready to explore.

The action takes place in the land known as the Lands Between, divided into six kingdoms. Each of them is ruled by one of the demigods, whom you have to defeat to take pieces of the Elden Circle. Smashing one of these mysterious objects started the cataclysm, which led the Lands Between to the brink of collapse. Your character, one of the Tarnished, has returned to his homeland from exile to regain once lost favor of the Golden Erdtree and become the new Elden Lord.

Gameplay-wise, it’s a mix of souls-like combat, counter system from Sekiro, and RPG elements from Demon’s Souls. After creating your character and finishing a short tutorial, you can venture whenever you want. There are no markers or pointers, so you’ll have to explore the world, defeat enemies and figure out how to become the Elden Lord on your own. It may be a frustrating experience at first, but there's no coming back once you get used to the harsh difficulty. The Lands Between will sink you in for countless hours.

Building your character is one of the most exciting parts of the game due to the plethora of weapons it offers. Nothing stops you from recreating Ghost of Tsushima’s protagonist if you want, as there are plenty of Katanas to find in Elden Ring.

God of War

God of War is a former PlayStation exclusive and one of the best action games of this generation. 2018’s release is a complete reboot of the series, ideal for newcomers wanting to enter the saga and experience the story of a former Greek god.

The game features a semi-open world, arcade-type combat, and linear progress. The story is fairly simple: you play as Kratos, the God of War, traveling alongside his son Atreus to scatter his wife’s ashes. The road to his destination is strewn with various difficulties, including beasts known from Norse mythology that awaits the uninvited guests. During his journey, Kratos must face the consequences of his actions and the uncontrollable anger in his heart.

Of course, it gets more complicated along the way, but I don’t want to spoil too much. You’re also going to meet a few people known from Norsen mythology that will make the story unexpectedly dramatic. The resemblance to the Ghost of Tsushima can be seen in storytelling, flawlessly written characters, voice-acting, and motion-capture animations. The rich environments of northern lands are even more stunning on PC, especially when played in native 4K resolution. 

Like in previous titles of the saga, the game features brutal combat relying on combos, offensive abilities, skills, and magical weapons. The iconic, fun hack and slash gameplay is vastly improved in this installment. You have to analyze your surroundings and land precise strikes. Sounds familiar? It’s also the first game in the series that introduced crafting and detailed character progression.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… A young Jedi called Cal Kestis hides his identity so the Empire won’t find him. What does the world full of blasters, lightsabers, and the power of the Force have in common with samurais from Feudal Japan? Quite a lot! Jedi Knights are Protectors of the Peace, and they have been trained in martial arts since they were little. Their iconic weapon – a lightsaber, is a sci-fi version of katana. Anybody who has played Ghost of Tsushima should have a lot of fun playing this one.

The story presented in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order takes place shortly after the events presented in Revenge of the Sith – the third episode of the Star Wars saga. Players take on the role of Cal Kestis, a former padawan who has to hide his past from the soldiers of the Galactic Empire who efficiently carry out Emperor Palpatine's Order 66, which orders the killing of all Jedi Knights.

It’s an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective. It features a well-designed lightsaber combat system, where this iconic weapon changes and evolves together with the hero. You’ll combine various attacks into complex combinations during duels and use different Jedi abilities. Platforming elements also play an important role. Each location is a real maze of corridors and surfaces, where you have to move around very efficiently. There’s wall-running, rope swinging, and extremely high jumping, as befits a Jedi.

Ghost of Tsushima took a lot of inspiration from Witcher 3, and you can almost feel a spiritual connection between the two. After all, anybody who had enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima almost definitely played Witcher 3. Besides, Witcher 3 is one of the greatest open-world action RPG games of all time, so not including it would be a huge understatement.

Speaking of open-world exploration, you'll witness a gorgeous landscape, marvelous nature, snowy mountains, dirty swamps, sandy beaches, etc. The diversity presented in this game is outstanding, and it delights players up to this day. Of course, the world isn’t empty as it features multipart side quests and an engaging main story that can be completed in multiple ways. 

The main story revolves around several plots. These include Geralt's search for his lost love and Nilfgaard's invasion of the Kingdoms of the North. We will also try to stop the Wild Hunt, who’s after his surrogate daughter, Ciri. These main quests offer a cinematic quality of storytelling, with branching paths of events, impressive interlude scenes, and carefully directed sequences.

The game also features detailed character progress revolving around our Witcher’s supernatural abilities. You can also use elemental bombs, special elixirs, and a crossbow but third-person swordplay and melee mastery are the bread and butter of gameplay. You’ll unlock new combat moves, which are highly beneficial when killing people and monsters as you progress. CD Projekt RED Studio delivered a true gem that should appeal to all Ghost of Tsushima fans.

Assassin's Creed series is your best bet if historical accuracy is more important to you than anything else. It’s a series of great games where each installment intertwines a fictional storyline with real-world historical events. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is no different as it takes place in faithfully recreated ancient Greece.

The action of Assassin's Creed Odyssey begins in 431 BC, at the beginning of the conflict between Sparta and Athens, which is known as the Peloponnesian War. Before the game starts, you have to choose one of two characters – Alexios or Kassandra, grandsons of the famous Spartan king Leonidas. However, they were cursed by their homeland and exiled in their youth. The story begins when your chosen protagonist takes on a dangerous assignment, which unexpectedly opens the way to reclaiming their family.

Apart from a multi-layered storyline including interaction with Greek gods, the combat system is vastly improved and more advanced than all the previous titles in the series. Enemy attacks are more deadly than ever, and they will attack simultaneously instead of patiently waiting for their demise. Compared to other games of the franchise, this is a night and day change and one of the main reasons to give it a chance. Unlike Ghost of Tsushima, there are plenty of weapons to choose from, so you can pick your specialization. Swords, axes, bows, shields, you name it.

Exploration also plays a huge role when playing Odyssey, as you can visit and climb the most recognizable buildings and monuments from that era. I’m certain that many gamers will happily replace Feudal Japan for ancient Greece.

Finally, we wanted to include Aloy’s latest adventure as a recommendation for Ghost of Tsushima fans. The latest release of the series is also a PS exclusive, at least at the time of writing. The post-apocalyptic world of gigantic robo-dinosaurs and mechanical beasts is as addictive as historically accurate Feudal Japan. At least that was the case for me. It’s a truly original game that mixes tribal life with sci-fi technology to the point where it feels natural.

The action of Horizon 2 takes place after the events presented in the previous game. In the post-apocalyptic world, a balance has been established between people and machines as they both learn to coexist. However, this Utopia didn't last long because a new danger appeared on the horizon in the form of a mysterious plague threatening all living beings. To discover its cause and eventually stop it, Aloy will take on a long and dangerous journey to the west of America.

The sequel follows the similar formula shown by its predecessor. The gameplay involves hunting machines, puzzle-solving, and completing various quests while exploring its gorgeous, open world. Exploration is also made easier by the new tools at Aloy's disposal like Pullcaster, Shieldwing, or a special mask that lets her breathe underwater.

It’s a truly next-gen experience that shows the potential of PS5 and can be played in rock-solid 60fps. However, I recommend picking up Horizon Zero Dawn for the first playthrough as it's available on PC and will help you understand the lore better. Regardless of your choice, you will lose yourself in this unique world for a hundred hours.
