Best Alien Games To Play If You’re Keen On Sci-Fi Action!
If you're old enough to remember Ridley Scott’s Alien from 1979, you know its influence on pop culture back then. Every sci-fi fan was obsessed with Xenomorphs, waiting with anticipation for any information regarding its sequel. Ultimately, at the time of writing, the Alien franchise consists of seven movies with mixed reviews. Gaming enthusiasts also got plenty of games set in the Alien universe out of all the movie franchises, but they also differ in quality.
Thus, we’ve decided to create a list of the best alien games in general, not only those tied to one franchise. We've got you covered whether you're looking for great first-person shooters or scary survival horror. Also, all games described here are available on RoyalCDKeys for competitive prices!
Alien: Isolation
- Release Date: October 6, 2014
- Developer: Creative Assembly
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3/4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iPhone/iPad
- Metascore: 81
The debut Alien film is considered the best of the franchise, and Alien: Isolation does its best to recreate the same vibe and atmosphere. Even the gameplay is reminiscent of this old movie, focusing more on stealth rather than combat. The experience is brooding and claustrophobic, as your main objective is to hide from the titular Xenomorph.
You play as Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, who encountered the alien fifteen years ago. Her objective is to uncover the truth behind the first meeting with Alien and what happened to her mother. The action takes place in a giant space station, where you have to play cat and mouse with the titular Alien. In contrast to the earlier action-packed productions starring xenomorphs, Alien: Isolation is a survival horror from flesh and bones, emphasizing the incredible atmosphere and omnipresent sense of danger.
Your enemy is equipped with perfect sight, hearing, and smell. The Xenomorph cannot be exterminated in any way, and the best ways to survive are the enemy's distraction, temporary deterrence, and skillful use of hiding places. You can also hack the ship's systems and create the items needed depending on the situation. She is also aided by an inherent motion detector, which reliably warns of impending danger as you traverse a seemingly abandoned ship. It’s definitely the scariest game on our list where you have to move quietly and keep a low profile, or else you won’t survive.
Alien: Isolation Steam Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.
Key Features
- A direct continuation of the original film.
- You play as Ellen Ripley’s daughter.
- The Xenomorph cannot be defeated in any way.
- Lots of sneaking and tools to distract the Alien.
- The overwhelming feeling of danger.
Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000
- Release Date: January 15, 2010
- Developer: Rebellion
- Platforms: PC
- Metascore: N/A
Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000 is a slightly revamped version of the first game from Aliens versus Predator series from 1999. The new release is no different from the original game released many years ago, although it has been appropriately modified for faster computers. As a result, the game can be easily played on virtually any hardware and operating system. Of course, from the visual side, the title looks archaic, remaining faithful to the original.
The revamped version includes a host of additional missions from the later Gold edition. There are plenty of spaceships, colonies, and alien planets to explore. In addition, we get Skirmish mode, where you can face off against alien hordes on several well-known locations as well as brand-new maps. It's worth mentioning that the game is extremely fast, challenging, and requires quite a bit of reflex. During your playthrough, you’ll get only a few options for saving the game state, which further complicates the fun.
Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000 Steam Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.
Key Features
- The revamped first installment of Alien versus Predator games.
- An action-packed game with three distinct factions to choose from.
- Three different campaigns.
- New, additional missions and Skirmish mode.
Dead Space
- Release Date: October 20, 2008
- Developer: EA Redwood Shores
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
- Metascore: 86
The next Dead Space game has been scheduled for Q4 2022, so in the meantime, it’s worth remembering the series' roots and why it’s so scary even today. The main aspect distinguishing Dead Space from the biggest hits of the survival horror genre is that the action does not take place in modern times. Instead, it takes players to a distant, sci-fi future. It's not a new idea, although similar themes were hooked on mostly single and not very successful titles in the past. Dead Space, on the other hand, draws heavily on cinematic classics like Event Horizon and Alien, offering a very dark atmosphere.
The main character of the described game is a qualified engineer. The game begins shortly after Isaac Clarke goes to one of the mining ships with the task of investigating the rescue signal that was sent from the deck of the spaceship. Upon arrival, he discovers that the entire crew has been murdered, and the mining ship's crew members have been taken over by parasitic creatures – necromorphs. Thus, not only must Isaac face the mutated creatures but also get out alive by escaping from the monster-controlled ship.
Dead Space is not a mindless shooter where you only exterminate monsters. Its main purpose is to provide constant tension and thrill of being attacked from any direction. The necromorphs are extremely powerful, and every encounter with them is very dangerous. At the same time, you will explore subsequent decks of the ship, mainly in search of useful information or items that could be used in the fight against mutated creatures. The cosmic terror, claustrophobia, and paranoia are taken to the extreme in Dead Space, providing one of the best sci-fi horror experiences in the gaming industry.
Dead Space Steam Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.
Key Features
- Probably the best sci-fi horror shooter to date.
- Deadly necromorphs that aren’t your typical cannon fodder.
- Tons of jumpscares.
- An engaging storyline that will keep you hooked until the very end.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite
- Release Date: August 24, 2021
- Developer: Cold Iron Studios
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
- Metascore: 69
Aliens: Fireteam Elite is an action-packed, co-op shooter where you have to fight back endless waves of xenomorphs. It’s basically Left 4 Dead but in the Alien franchise. However, aliens are way more intelligent and will attack you from any direction, including falling on you from above! The action of Aliens: Fireteam Elite begins 23 years after the events shown in the original Alien trilogy. The crew of the ship USS Endeavor receives a message from the planet Katanga asking for help. They quickly face the horror Ellen Ripley experienced more than two decades earlier. It’s a continuation of Alien: Isolation but from the colonial marines' perspective.
You start by creating your own commando and then choosing one of five classes: gunner, technician, medic, scout, and demolition expert. This decision translates into the arsenal and skills you’ll use in the fight against the various alien species. There are more than 20 types of enemies (including 11 aliens), and each of them is characterized by different behavior and abilities.
From what I’ve seen, reviewers criticized the game for its short and repetitive campaign, but Steam users are more forgiving, giving it mostly positive reviews. It means finding a soulmate to finish the campaign together shouldn’t be much of a problem.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite is available on RoyalCDKeys.
Key Features
- The action takes place 23 years after the original Alien trilogy.
- More than 20 types of enemies, each with different abilities.
- Five difficulty levels.
- Four campaigns that can be played either solo or in co-op.
- Challenge Cards that are great for replaying missions.
XCOM 2
- Release Date: February 5, 2016
- Developer: Firaxis Games
- Platforms: PC, Playstation 4/5, Xbox One
- Metascore: 88
Best alien games are not limited to shooters! XCOM 2 is a turn-based strategy game developed by a studio behind such classics as the Civilization series. Your main objective is, unsurprisingly, to try to fight off an alien invasion. It’s a direct successor to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, where humanity ultimately lost to the overwhelming enemy forces. Hope for freedom, however, has not completely died. The remnants of the original forces of the paramilitary organization XCOM can’t accept defeat. They are still operating in hiding and using guerrilla tactics to regain control of the planet. And this is where you step in. Your troops need guidance, and it’s up to you whether they succeed.
The composition of the team and its equipment depends on your decisions. You’ll be given a wide range of technologies and equipment that you can modify according to your needs. The gameplay won’t feel repetitive, thanks to randomly generated maps. The combat and command system has also been improved, in addition to new buildings added to your base. An interesting feature is the necessity to perform side quests, which affects the strength and type of enemies encountered in the main missions.
All in all, you need to know your stuff when planning your next attack or commanding orders. The learning curve is quite steep since your squad members can die permanently if you don't know what you're doing. However, after you get the hang of what’s going on, you’ll just watch as hours pass by while incorporating your next brilliant strategy.
XCOM 2 Steam Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.
Key Features
- Tactical, turn-based combat.
- Five soldier classes, each with its own skill tree.
- Plenty of options to develop your base.
- Active modding community.
Elex II
- Release Date: March 1, 2022
- Developer: Piranha Bytes
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One
- Metascore: 65
We’re switching the genre once again, this time for a third-person, action RPG. However, it’s not the most polished production out here. If you’re expecting a top-notch RPG experience, better lower your expectations. It’s a Piranha Bytes game, and they’re definitely not known for the highest possible production values. For Piranha Bytes fans, though, Elex II is exactly what they would want, and expect it to be. Why is it on our list, then?
Despite kinda outdated graphics and clunky animations, Elex II is a successor to the old Gothic series, where exceptionally written characters and not overly large open-world compensated for these flaws. It’s the same case with Elex. Here, you’ll be traversing the science-fantasy world of Magalan, invaded by deadly aliens.
The game offers a quite unforgiving experience, where you’ll explore a dark, post-apocalyptic world where magic and technology collide. You’ll have to join one of three available factions and make many choices along the way.
These choices have short and long-term consequences that will affect the course of the story. NPCs will also react to your decisions and will remember what you did throughout the game. Additionally, you’ll be able to roam Magaln freely by using a jetpack! Elex II takes quite an unusual take on the fantasy genre, so if you're keen on exploring the vast Magalan, this is definitely a good pick.
Elex II Steam Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.
Key Features
- The gameplay is very similar to Gothic and Risen, but it’s a post-apocalyptic science fantasy.
- A vast world free to explore, thanks to your jetpack.
- Three distinct factions with different questlines.
- Plenty of choices to make that alter the course of the game.
System Shock 2
- Release Date: August 11, 1999
- Developer: Looking Glass Studios
- Platforms: PC
- Metascore: 92
System Shock 2 is an instant classic and Metacritic’s must-play, so its absence on this list would be a crime. It’s a first-person shooter that was quite innovative, featuring original mechanics and a storyline that was way ahead of its time. It did lose some of its uniqueness over time, but it’s still a decent video game about aliens.
The plot of System Shock 2 is closely related to the events presented in the first System Shock. The military organization Unified National Nominee is trying to limit the influence of megacorporations with the aid of a modern spaceship Von Braun. You play as a soldier who volunteered to participate in the unit's first flight. Unexpectedly, during the voyage, the main character is awakened from a coma, only to find that most of the crew has been slaughtered and mutants and rogue robots are on board.
As it befits a survival horror, the plot is full of surprising twists and turns to keep you in suspense until the end. You can choose one of three professions, which defines the initial access to certain skills and can be further upgraded by cybernetic modules later. Great emphasis in the game was placed on combat. There are a lot of ranged and melee weapons that can be further upgraded or modified and even developed to something entirely new.
The developers have also tried to provide a fair number of logic puzzles. They are not too complicated and are generally limited to properly positioning various levers, but they perfectly enrich the gameplay. System Shock 2 is an outstanding reminiscent of the late 90s and one of the most original alien games even today.
System Shock 2 Steam Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.
Key Features
- A classic, first-person shooter with survival horror elements.
- A gripping storyline that’s full of unexpected twists.
- Three professions to choose from that determine your overall gameplay.
- Plenty of weapons and cybernetic modifications.
No Man’s Sky
- Release Date: August 12, 2016
- Developer: Hello Games
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
- Metascore: 77
Lastly, we wanted to include a game where violence toward unidentified space creatures isn’t its core activity. No Man’s Sky didn’t have the best debut, to say the least, but it grew into a fully-fledged survival sim set in a procedurally generated, endless space. Now is the best time to finally play this space sim and experience everything it has to offer.
You’re going to traverse interstellar space aboard a variety of ships. Planets and moons, on the other hand, you’re going to explore on foot or with the help of many vehicles and equipment, including Mecha – a special armor protecting you from extreme conditions.
Since the release, the game has been taken care of thoroughly, making it live up to the hype it had before its release. The devs have been pushing out constant updates that added tons of content to the game. After you get your ship up and running, you can do whatever you want. Go exploring planets and make some cash, become a trader by carrying resources from system to system and flip them for a profit, or choose the life of a space pirate with the latest update to the game. No matter what you decide to do, No Man’s Sky is an endless sandbox with lots of aliens in it.
No Man’s Sky Steam Key is available on RoyalCDKeys.
