The reason why I put this title in the first place on this list is quite obvious. In Cat Quest, however, you also control a curious cat in a completely different context and with different motivations. 

Cat Quest is an action game with multiple role-playing elements set in a vibrant world with plenty of cute creatures, scenarios, thumbnails, models, graphics, and even combat. Everything in this game is adorable, using a pastel color palette and cartoonish-style characters that make you want to hug these lovely cats. 

However, regardless of its engaging and lovely gameplay and scenarios, Cat Quest occurs in a medieval dystopian world that reminds me of scenarios extracted from stories like A Song of Ice and Fire. But that is not all. Cat Quest also boasts an emotional story whose core is about rescuing the kidnapped sister of the main kitty character. 

Cat Quest is a simple game played from a top-down perspective that cat lovers will love and one of those indie titles worth playing when wanting a few hours of fun.

There you are, another title with an anthropomorphic main character, who, this time, is a little fox but with great strengths and conviction looking to solve a mystery in an unknown land previously inhabited by a lost civilization.

Let’s agree on something: at first sight, Tunic seems very similar to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past or Link’s Awakening, which is true since Tunic seeks to look like these classics but with a fresher case.

In Tunic, just like in TLoZ and similar games, you yield a sword and a shield while exploring a vast map full of hidden corners, corridors, secrets, resources, and enemies you must face to continue advancing. Since Tunic is also a puzzle game, you’ll have to do your best to decipher these game features and get new skills and magic.

Tunic is more than another game with an animal protagonist. What’s more! It has become one of my favorite games of recent times. Not for nothing, Tunic is one of the best indie games of recent times.

In the fourth title of this article, you don’t control an anthropomorphic character. Still, you play as a white wolf wandering through biomes extracted from medieval Japan. Not for nothing, Okami has an anime-like and cel-shaded style characterized by strong black lines and expressive shapes.

Similar to Stray, Amaterasu, the main character in Okami, explores a woodcut environment with great animations and visual design while performing platforming and solving puzzles. Moreover, like Tunic, Okami features multiple similarities with The Legend of Zelda, such as the general experience and the overall gameplay.

However, this third-person adventure game features RPG elements, allowing you to complete main and side quests and other activities that will reward you with Praise, a resource you can use to improve your character’s stats.

What I love the most about this puzzle-solving and adventuring game is its great atmospheric experience with notable characters, engaging dialogues, and a colorful tale-like scenario. And I’m sure people who love Stray will also deeply enjoy those.

Regarding adventures in a hostile environment and post-apocalyptic open world where you play as a furry creature, Biomutant stands out due to its imagination and creativity. In this opportunity, you control a mammalian warrior, a raccoon-like character who, armed to the teeth, must fight against mutated creatures. In this sense, Biomutant is a survival game since you must continuously improve your abilities to face challenges.

Technically, Biomutant is an action RPG since the decisions you make throughout the game help you to build your character, their gameplay style, favorite weapons, etcetera. For example, you can collect parts and attachments and create weapons to differentiate your gunplay from others. This way, you can become a melee or long-range warrior. 

Earning experience points and leveling up your raccoon warrior is integral to gameplay. This way, you can face more powerful monsters, access new areas, and even use new tools to survive in the most dangerous zones of the map, like the Deadzone.

I played Biomutant despite the comments at its release, which said that Biomutant lacks options and gameplay is boring. None of this! This title presents many opportunities, with amazing design and many creatures. There is no time to get bored with this game! 

Stray and Biomutant share a furry creature as a main character, a sense of exploration, a great narrative, and a similar visual style.

At first sight, Endling; Extinction Is Forever looks like it directly draws inspiration from Journey or Gris. This is true from the visual design and style perspective, but it's more than just an homage to classic video games mentioned before. 

Stray and Endling share an animal as the main character and the protagonist of the adventure, who must traverse through dangerous scenarios. In the case of Endling: Extinction is Forever, you control the last mother fox in the world while protecting your young cubs from threats like fire and hunters. 

People who have enjoyed Stray – as is my case – will enjoy this game also since progressing across scenarios is quite similar, discovering and unlocking paths thanks to new abilities you learn over time. Moreover, although Endling is a 2D survival game, it gives a similar sense of devastation and despair as the cat game. 

Endling: Extinction is Forever is a great game that everyone who loves beautiful visuals and experiences like Stray, Spirit of the North, Untitled Goose Game, Tokyo Jungle, and other games should play.

The first time I played this game, it made me think of the 1999 movie "The Iron Giant." This is because in ENCODYA, you control a nine-year-old girl named Tina and her robot buddy SAM-53 as they go on adventures in a futuristic city called Neo Berlin, set in 2062.

After the first impression, I noticed that ENCODYA was pretty similar to Stray since the architecture and design of buildings were almost identical in both titles. However, there’s a difference in missions: Tina intends to save the world from grayness, but the atmosphere and robot characters are extracted from the same mind.

ENCODYA also features interesting dialogues – which are scarce in Stray – and puzzles across the entire city, challenging your intelligence at every moment. The city of Neo Berlin features over one hundred locations and cinematic cutscenes that expand the knowledge of the city, providing a better and more complete experience.

A game with a mouse protagonist could not be missing from this list. Since rodents have filled the silver screen and been protagonists of some games and movies –like Chip and Dale, Mickey Mouse, and An American Tail – a thief-mouse was the next step.

I love games featuring mice, and Ghost of a Tale is the proper heir to this tradition. Still, the mammal protagonist of this game, Tilo, a minstrel mouse, cannot attack his enemies. So, the best action is to avoid them whenever possible or impede them in the best-case scenarios.

Throughout the gameplay, you must hide every time an enemy might see you. But do not worry. There are dozens of holes and spots to cover your steps and disappear. However, it isn’t as easy as it sounds! As Ghost of a Tale is an RPG stealth game, there are main and side quests that will reward you with experience points and collectibles to level up your character, increasing the health bar used as stamina for running.  

I played this game before Stray, and both left a lasting positive impression after completion – definitely worth it! There's no hesitation in trading your feline protagonist for a charming mouse thief.

The last game on this list is different since you control a baby shark looking for vengeance that converts everything he finds into food. It is a hilarious game with a few touches of innocent violence. You can eat humans and fish to nurture yourself and grow until you become a giant and fierce shark capable of reaching your revenge.

Maneater features an open world with different areas, each with unique resources, missions, and environments. As a wild animal, you leverage your surroundings to survive and kill your parents’ assassin. 

I had a pleasant experience playing Maneater for the first time since it is a short game you can complete in ten hours, maybe a bit more. Besides, Maneater made me smile a few times since the events can be ridiculous, with animations and graphics emphasizing people’s expressions and fear.

A shark opening to the world and looking to live his life may sound like the worst idea, but Maneater is mainly the opposite. It’s a funny adventure with a great level of design and multiple things to do that make you feel as free as possible.
