For Honor is a competitive, third-person action game developed and published by Ubisoft. It’s set in a fantasy, medieval world where warriors from different ages fight with each other. However, seeing Knights, Vikings, and Samurais on the same battlefield is not historically accurate.

Story and Background

For Honor tells the tale of warriors divided into three opposing factions. They survived a mysterious cataclysm that changed the world forever. Now stuck on a desolated island, the factions turned against each other in a bid for survival.

Their conflict is lasting for centuries. A war between Knights, Vikings, and Samurais is continued by descendants of each faction. A warlord named Apollyon, whose intention is to ensure an eternal age of all-out war, ignites their conflict. As she rises up with Blackstone Legion, your job is to defeat her.

Each faction has a separate story mode. The Campaign mode can be played either single or in co-op. That said, players can choose between a Samurai Kensei, Viking Raider, or Knight Warden.

The story behind the three factions is very authentic and unique. The game offers an engaging storyline, where you’ll be taken on a journey to recover a world they once lost, each from a different perspective.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Combat is the core mechanic in For Honor. Ubisoft designed it specifically for this title and called it The Art of Battle. While being simple and accessible for beginners, it still provides room for improvement for veterans. It focuses primarily on 1v1 duels, although fighting multiple foes is common.

While in combat, you shuffle between strategic possibilities. Every battle is a calculated struggle of space management and precise strikes. Fights are usually slow and measured, so mashing buttons mindlessly will get you killed after one attack.

Each character can block in three directions: left, right, and high. If your opponent goes for a strike, an arrow indicating its direction will show just before it hits. It gives you a brief window to react and block enemy attacks.

Sounds simple, but second-guessing your foe is a skill to develop. Waiting for the right moment to block, attack or dodge is crucial for securing a victory, especially if you cooperate with your team in competitive multiplayer.

Multiplayer

Story Mode is just an appetizer before the main course. Multiplayer is bread and butter for this title, so sticking to single-player won’t give you the full experience.

There are plenty of different modes to dive into. Some of them can be played against A.I. if you want to practice first.

• Duel. As the name suggests, it’s a 1v1 multiplayer match. Players compete against each other in a small arena to show off their strength and skill. Playing against A.I. is also possible.
• Brawl. A 2v2 multiplayer match. Teammates do not spawn together but are relatively close. Every player is matched against an opponent before he can assist his teammate. No one is obligated to defeat each other in a 1v1, but the mode was designed to be played like that.
• Dominion. A 4v4 multiplayer match. Two opposing teams of four players spawn on a random map. The area is divided into three zones, which need to be taken and controlled. Controlling the zones and killing enemies grants you points. After reaching 1000 points, the enemy team can’t respawn, and the game ends after killing them.
• Elimination. A classic 4v4 Deathmatch. Four players are spawned on the same map fighting with each other. Last man standing wins.
